Southern Resident Killer Whales are critically endangered and are in need of a range of conservation efforts. When this film was made there were only 75 southern resident orcas left in the wild. We chose to highlight this number as an anchor for the fate and trend of Southern Resident population decline, as since the film was made in early 2019, the number dipped down to 72 at one point and is currently at 74 (September 2020).
But there's a very simple and surprising way that we can save the orcas: Reforestation. Planting trees and restoring on-land and river habitats is the best, simplest and cheapest form of Southern Resident conservation.
The endangered Killer Whales of the Pacific Northwest rely on the West Coast Chinook salmon for food. However, salmon stocks are diminishing due to loss of habitat and increasing pollution - ultimately impacting the Orca. Interestingly, reforestation is one of the best ways to help restore salmon habitats. Planting millions of trees along the rivers that drain into Puget Sound, and throughout the Pacific Northwest, will help reduce dirty runoff from our towns and cities into the rivers. Trees will also help cool water temperatures, perfect for salmon, and add beneficial woody debris to the water that help salmon develop, ultimately increasing food supply for killer whales.

Planting trees will help to rehabilitate salmon spawning grounds, ensuring the Orca have plenty to eat and giving the endangered species the best chance of survival.
Our amazing partners at Promise the Pod across the Pacific Northwest have identified critical forested areas that need to be restored in order to have the greatest possible impact on the well-being of the Southern Resident Orcas.
Planting trees around the rivers and streams that feed into the Orca's habitat reduces water pollution, lowers toxicity, protects salmon spawning grounds, and improves killer whale food supply.
These projects will bring benefits to other species of wildlife, as well as the communities in the surrounding areas.
Killer whales and orcas are terms used interchangeably.

I wonder if water proof TV screens showing where humans live and the world, the Earth to Orc's Dolphins and Wales. Wonder what their reaction would be .

If you were to recommend a place to buy trees to plant where would it be? And do you know what Ecosia is and how it works? And I’m trying to make a tree nursery with oaks at my home do you have any tips? How much should I start with if it’s my first time? Should I plant them in plastic bottles? And btw thanks One Tree Planted

If you're looking to plant trees locally and/or start a nursery the best place to begin would be your local garden centers or plant nurseries. You'll meet knowledgeable staff there who can answer all your green thumb questions and they usually know the local climate and ecology best. If it's your first time, start with just one! Or just a few and grow from there. If you want us to plant some for you, you know where to go (onetreeplanted.org). Hope that helps! 🌲
