Beepberry! Tiny Pi-based Blackberry cyberdeck

- Опубликовано: 29 сен 2024
- The Beepberry is a tiny portable Blackberry-esque cyberdeck powered by a Raspberry Pi Zero W (I'm using a Zero 2 W in mine).
I bought this back when it was announced, but right now it's sold out; sign up to be notified when it's back at shop.sqfmi.com...
Find out more in my blog post: www.jeffgeerli...
They had the perfect opportunity to call it a Blackberry Pi
They mightve gotten in trouble for that, but it would've been such a good name...
"They", huh?
@@Marc42 Yeah?
Just make it raspberry π
@@Epsicronicsconsidering they've already renamed to Beepy, I'd say that's the case
FINALLY someone made something like this, I think I have to buy this to remake the blackberry UI ❤
I've been thinking of something similar for at least 2 years. so glad they've made it !
I actually was looking for something exactly like this just the other day... Thanks Jeff!
I love this guys voice, the way he talks is very smooth
I'm so inlove with these phone up until now..
Please make a long video showcasing how to do it. I'm a noob but very anxious about making something like this.
I love products like this, reusing old ewaste that gives it an extended life.
Unfortunately it’s not reusing old parts. It’s a brand new keyboard designed to _look_ like a Blackberry keyboard. Completely new design from Solder Party.
It’d be so cool to have something like this as a dedicated Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup device 😮
Oh I want one, that's awesome
Awesome little dev interface. If I could have this setup as a “Litefone” style daily phone. I would switch immediately. Give me text and phone calls separate from a tablet. That’s all I ever wanted.
You make it look easy.
Do you make a full video on this?
Looks like a device I could like.
I wish I was interested in things like guys like this guy are interested in things. Like, I like things, certain things make my innards smile, but true fans really dig into a thing, they get all familiar with the intricacies of a thing. Neat.
Ooh nice, looking forward to the full vid!
I’m liking these little devices . I might try making
This concept in a laptop form factor would be perfect for me
Incredible ❤
i (still) want one of these so bad
That's soooooo cool!
Blackberry singin’ in the dead of niiiight. 🎵 🎶
Wish they come up with a complete kit, all in box, that can be easily upgraded or modified and easily available. not everyone is that techie and have all the tools and skills.
This seems interesting. I'd love a modern phone in this style with physical keyboard. Running Android would be even better, I think.
I want one!! I would use this as my daily cell phone if it had GSM capabilities
Research In Motion has entered the chat. (Looks like they had to rename it “Beepy” and blur out photos of that keyboard.)
It would be so cool if you could use it to calls and messages! Really interesting project anyway!
I didn't understand a single thing and even don't know why I get this on my recommendations, but that device surely looks interesting.
I've got to make one of these.
Sounds super cool, but big miss with not fitting a battery to it. The real cost is then the device + the computer + the battery + a 3D printer + space to put it + time and effort to learn other things to make the printer worthwhile. Already a sunk cost for many, but I'd shell out for a back piece and call it a day, to make it like the PocketCHIP but more capable.
cyberdeck?
Me: *Screams in shadowrun*
That'd be good for portable text based games
I have no idea how I'd use this device since I'm not good with Linux, like at all, but its sooo stinking adorable I'd love to have one and learn to use it 😂❤
best crack berry ever, i own the last one the 9900
Cow say *BEEP* _🐮_
Batman's gonna hack a Soviet computer with that.
Well now i want one
"yeah teacher it's just a calculator"
My favorite phone❤
Missed BlackBerry pi pun
Wow, this video really showcases the creativity and innovation behind the Beepberry Pi! While the design is undeniably sleek and eye-catching, it seems to prioritize form over function. As someone passionate about programming, I can't help but feel that it lacks the essential keys and practicality needed for serious coding projects. It appears to have been created without addressing a genuine need in the programming community. Nonetheless, I appreciate the effort and ingenuity put into its design!
Cool little thing.
I need this
I would like a simple smartphone for texting, calling and email that has a massive battery that can last for like a week on a charge.
Wow this is cool. I’d like to get one. What sort of things can do with this device?
my first smart phone is blackberry storm 9520, i lost the data, i miss my first puppy, the vlog saved in that broken blackberry, no backup, damnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
The types of things I love, but I never know what to do from them :(
Looks like my old Motorola which got mistaken for a blackberry constantly
That blackberry phone looking so cute phone but it is old😅
1 love blackberry keypad,
Cool. But feels like just like with half of all pi:s this is something people will buy, think of all the cool projects you could build, and then leave collecting dust when they realise they already have tons of computers. I even see it in the comments ("I have an unused pi zero that would be great for this")
Awesome....
What original blackberry users thought they looked like 😅
Awesome another device to make raspberry pi zero's harder to get
Nice 👌
And too bad you can't use it on a modern cellular network, people would love this.
Basically the blackberry dakota 😂
Looks amazing with the rubber band around it 🙄
next: fashion icon gameplay in lolly's BlackBerry phone
I can't believe they squandered the opportunity to call it Blackberry Pi :(
Good luck getting a rpi
❌Beepberry
✅Blackberry
Where's the rest of this? Want to see the case and stuff
Is there a hardened version of the rubber band? I’m worried about someone getting access to my flex settings especially since there doesn’t seem to be any other way to gain access if it’s compromised 😂
I’ll like to see this with a LoRa radio
Blackberry Pie
awsesome
Hm wonder if there's a version of the LCD with a backlight. Wouldn't take much effort to put a tiny switch on the edge to activate it. Or else use a GPIO on the 2040, but for things like backlights, a real switch is better. Worst-case maybe just a capacitive contact on the PCB, all microcontrollers do cap-touch sensing now, right?
Be nice too, maybe a touchpad on the back, like Playstation joypads have on their front.
Did the project die? Haven't seen them on sale at all, and I really wanted to get my hands on one
I should have learned coding back in the mid to late 90s and after highschool in 2000... Wasnt my thing ever,.but man the sht people can do today
It would be greater with a SIM module
i wanna that
If that animal is a sheep then I know the creator watches the asdf videos for sure.
It comes with a rubber band 😂
The ads just never stops
Is the BlackBerry keyboard removed from an actual device and is that module something I can put together at home? Or can I buy it like that??
Please make an extended video for this!
Blackberry Pi
No backlight? Find a way to hook up one of those GBA lights
What distro are you running on your desktop? For a minute it looked like macos!
If it can’t play doom on it or have a doom showcase then it’s not worth knowing ❤
why pull off the wonderful free screen cover?
the shrekberry
Looks like its time to put Doom in it
nice
Is the rubber band included?
How do you guys even manage to buy a pi zero?? I cant find it anywhere
Yeah.... but does it have a flashlight on the back?
i love how ppl use hardware thats equivalent to 20 year old garbage and call it a cyberdeck so it doesnt seem like a total waste
Cyberdeck is the justification to have fun with little bits of hardware
If you google the word Geek you get a link to this, seriously, try it
That’s GENIUS. 🥹
I don't understand ANY of this as much as a frog understands quantum physics, but it sure looks cool
My esteemed colleague Professor Ribbit of Oxford Lakes University is offended by your flippancy Sir
Very tiny Linux computer.
what would you use it for or whats even the point i kow its cool but it dosent look like you cant really do alot@yigitorhan7654
@@cookie73299imagine a flip phone, but it’s easier to play doom on it
@@cookie73299 there are many things you can do with such a small computer, you could set up a pi hole and get ad free browsing across all devices in your home network by blocking the advertisement servers’ ip addresses, or set up your own home network for file sharing across devices, or even host your own cloud with nextcloud
Of course all those things could be done with virtually any computer, but as in all server related systems, that computer would have to be always powered on, which would be much more convenient with a very small device like that. Many others, me included, just use old laptops for the same purpose
its exceptional seeing people reuse old device components for fun tinker projects like this, those blackberry keyboards were too nice to end up in a dump.
Not reusing old equipment is just lack of imagination.
Some of these may be surplus replacement parts as well, which depending on the model of BlackBerry they're supposed to go into, may actually outnumber the # of working models.
This is all new parts, it's like expensive cool DIY hacker gadget fashion accessory, for those that want to work in "tech" but don't know a gpio from their armpit
@@Username-qx9gkHonestly I think you're right
@@deepsleep7822 But maybe they have some space part left, it is saving trash
My God I miss that keyboard with a passion. That phone was the first phone I had that could multitask like a champion
Careful with this device.. Neither lsusb, nor lspci, nor dmsg recognize the rubber band and there are no drivers available for it. Caveat Emptor :D.
The rubber band is the driver. You'll find that out if you stretch it too far! 😅
A stretched rubber band has a service life. The variables that affect the service life is ambient temperature, humidity and average oxygen levels in the air. Other adverse external factors include: salts, oils and acids from sweaty hands.
If I were to take a risk-averse approach I would take out insurance on the rubber band, or I would print out a case from ABS plastic.
Damn proprietary lock-in with these rubber bands, this is why we need open-source firmware
😂
We need the rubber drivers, waiting for Elon musk to release them
If really wish more phone manufacturers would make phones that have physical keyboards again. I miss this kind of stuff. Way easier to type on than a touchscreen.
there is a lot of that. you just have to search up
@@user-fx8cz9dh7tCan you recommend any examples?
If you mean touch screen smartphone with keyboard, yes please. I've seen maybe a handful of brand new phones that are like that.
Well, Nokia had done that recently. It sold for the first month, and people stopped buying
Android swiping keyboard and the new iOS swiping keyboard are often preferable for me and for simple sentences I often type faster with swiping than I do on a mechanical keyboard even.
Please make a long video about this. Thank you!
Agreed.
There’s a few on here.
You HAVE to use the rubber band. It`s DRMed and its the only battery holder that it will reckonize.
Lmao a serial number locked rubber band 😂
@@DellSnoozeApple would clearly do it
@@nocontext211they absolutely would haha
Reckonize? Tell your local representatives to invest more in public education
@@Nefariously_ignorant do you also speak 3 languages and sometimes mess up? Thought so.
This is the exact thing I have wanted literally for years.
So it will be interesting to see how well it Actually works while I hope and wait that they sell these again.
😭 ikr, i really needed this exact thing
i keep checking out their website hoping for new stock😢
What exactly can you do with this?
@@Yiffboy what can't you do with it? It's a linux box in hand.....,
All the things, including batterykit is together so don't need to worry about finding a monitor and a keyboard when a damn pi disconncets from network so you don't have to shut it down, a local nas when you are going someware and don't wanted keeps thing running in home to access servives running in server.... there are a lot
@@Yiffboy Run Taskwarrior (a program that helps sort, schedule, and track human tasks) in your pocket. That's what I'd do with it anyway.
(The Android Taskwarrior package doesn't work very well. I have no idea if anybody ever got it working with iOS.)
Everything with a blackberry keyboard is an awesome product already
Imagine using this as your daily driver. 😄
Instant conversation piece.
omg I really miss Blackberry! The Q20 Classic keyboard was so cool. I find it easier than on a touch screen in some ways, and the way you can use the keyboard itself as a mousepad was dope. I picked one off eBay a couple years ago, sadly for only $30.
Sometimes, the screen protectors are of high quality and well worth keeping on the screen for continued protection, unless they eventually start separating on their own, then there isn't much point in trying to keep it on.
Да : о их отрывают зачем та .. держутся нармально .. 🪔😭
