The house my auntie built a long time ago still stands today. She's an architect and used to work in New York. As a kid, I grew up in this house and never felt so hot inside until I stayed in a different house. It was then that I realized and was truly amazed by my auntie's ingenuity.
The bottom of the house has a 3ft space with numerous rectangular holes all around. At first, I thought these openings were for flood protection or storage purposes, but that wasn't the case. The floors of the rooms above were made of wooden slabs, possibly mahogany, with small gaps between them. That's where the cool air would enter. It was like a natural airflow system. Now, I know you will say, why at the bottom, why not at the top? The answer is, I really don't know how but the 'system' works flawlessly. I wish I can ask her, but sadly she passed so many years back with cancer. But, as an adult, I'm truly amazed the house she made.
I believe the house was constructed in the 1960s. Even the ceilings outside the rooms had this airflow feature, although I'm not sure what it's called. Back then, we didn't have insulation, nor did it exist before, but we didn't need air conditioning. During hot summer, I have to admit that some heat would still seep in, but we never felt hot at all. We would simply open our louvre windows, those glass slabs that were all familiar and very common in the 80s and 90s..

Cool air is denser and sinks low to the ground. While hot air rises in your home, cooler air rushes from the bottom to replace the hot air, so even if your windows are closed air still flows freely. I hope to do that with my house one day.

I beg to disagree. And, there's nothing I can say neg about his profession. It's great. And by the way, engineers and architects are not the same when it comes to thinking about the building construction. Well at some part maybe they come to terms that they've got to half-agree. But, you know, Architects are more on designs yet doesn't mean they're not into build/strength analysis. Coz, Engineers particularly Civil in the building construction is more on strength. But the plans should come from Architects coz they're really good at it. Then pass to engineers for building. either thru a contractor's engineers or any. Then, hand in hand check by the Archi on site and vice versa by the engineer.
Say, for example sa columns, architects would love to beautify (beautify would mean, they're having turned on their artistic mind, that they'd love to have it "slender" or "too much slender". Yes, engineers have design considerations on "slender columns" too but, it's way too different when the slenderness is way too much) the dimensions yet engineers would love to have it be prismatic (but mostly people would see it "boring" dimensions/size, coz, that say all about the strength. and so many aspects and on and so forth. And so yes, walang duda sa profession ni sir Slater. He's really great in his own ways. And andami kung natutunan sa kanya when it comes to civil engineering profession and entrepreneurship. Btw, we're professionally aligned.😊
      peace be with you. ✌️
they're both great in their fields. FYI, Sir Oliver's mom is an Engineer too, by the way.

Honestly sa humid climate gaya dito sa Pilipinas. Hindi practical yung mag bukas ng bintana for ventilation kasi ang hangin is humid nga. So kahit gaano pa kahangin sa labas ma alinsangan parin sa pakiramdam dahil malagkit sa pakiramdam pag humid ang hangin. humid ang hangin sa Pilipinas year round. Best solution talaga pag mainit eh is to avoid windows na aabutan ng direct sun & inverter aircon + solar panel = presko + no electric bill.

If we should have the expertise in those systems kasi ang taas ng humidity level at air particles sa Pinas. Why is no one talking about home insulation? different kinds of insulators or triple glazed windows to prevent heat from coming in? bakit ang daming nakakapasok na ipis through the drain pipes and how can we prevent that? the quality of houses in the Philippines is so low kahit na may architects or contractors. And even those what they sell as "Luxury Homes" that would go for hundreds of millions of pesos still lack proper HVAC systems.
