  • Mr Didgeridoo Djalu Gurruwiwi talking to the camera and to his family. Japan's NHK, the equivalent of Australia's non-commercial ABC national tv channel, visited Gove for several days to shoot a documentary on lightning featuring 3 personalities: a storm chaser, Djalu Gurruwiwi, and a lightning researcher/academic.
The film crew wished to learn about Aboriginal cultural perspectives on lightning. They filmed a yirdaki being cut, made and played, interviewed Djalu and other family members, and shot an amazing bunggul on the beach at Birritjimi featuring the sacred lightning dance.
Rripangu Yirdaki and Lirrwi Yolngu Tourism Aboriginal Corporation flew me to Arnhem Land to assist with the documentary shoot and what a time it was!
If you want to know more about Galpu history and Djalu's vision, learn Dhangu and listen carefully to what Djalu has to say.
