- Caught in an Arizona flash flood. The road washed out, so we decided to get drone video. Meanwhile water started coming over the road behind us, trapping us in. We had to make a run for it.
Location: Somewhere near Hackberry, Arizona. Route 66, Kingman.
Great video, really shows what happens and how quick it does. Got to love Arizona.

Thats true. I saw a video on RUclips of a violent flash flood. Strong enough to wash a car away easy.

Don't ever live near a flood plain in the desert because you never know when a flood of water will just come your way.
amazing to think how far the water has actually traveled before reaching you guys ,, must have been raging closer to the mountains
Thanks for the video. With drones we can see details of places such as this flooded road, where no ordinary camera can go. Ignore the critics who say you should have filmed the source. The source could be miles away, or the storm could be over by now.
The source is likely outside of the drone control range.

Flash floods are interesting and all, but... I think I was most impressed with how steady the drone was. It was like it was a fixed camera, for example when you left it hovering when moving the car out of the way.
Funny, I was amazed at how jerky the operation was. I guess being a commercially licensed drone pilot gives you a different view of things.
Well, we might not talk about the same things... I suppose the operation (actually moving it around) was a bit jerky, and I'm guessing that can depend on both drone quality/advancement, settings and operator skills.
But look at, for example, 1:25 to 1:43 where it isn't really "operated", just left hovering while they move the car.
Seems rock steady to me. Doesn't move out of the spot, the camera could just as well have been stuck to a pole or something.
But sure, I've barely flown a drone at all, at least not without crashing... :P
(cheap beginner's test object w/o "stability intelligence" so it was expected...)
I'm in Phoenix I explore lot with my jeep all these dry washes look like hasn't been water in them for 100 years but every year or two they turn into torrents of water. Back in 2014 we had 6 inches in one hour rivers which hadn't got more then a few feet deep in 20 years turned into 20 feet deep 100 feet across rivers with 15 foot 20 ton boulders rolling in them. It's really strange because it could be 110 all day dry as a bone and at 6pm the streets are flooded
I'm from the midwest, born and raised, so I know NOTHING about Arizona. My question is, how is there flash flooding here, where everything is so dry, also because it seems like its such a small area that it's coming from! Just crazy! Hope there were no injuries
I grew up in mesa but spent alot of time in aj, East mesa and queen creek and sycamore creek all of which have very similar flash floods. One of many reasons why we have the "stupid motorist" law. Nice footage thanx for the "flash backs" lol

Seeing as there appears to be no rain, this water must come from many miles away.
Correct. Same with lightening. You can get hit when the storm is ten miles distant.

Great video!!! Videos like this is good to see being from a another state that you dont get flash floods like this. Videos like this can help travels not from the area understand some of the local dangers that you wouldn'texpect.

Gee! I can't imagine a stream flowing wherever it wants to in a flood plain. It clearly happens frequently by the grader-made windrows of sediment along both sides or the road and the puddles from a previous "flood".
Watching cars drive through the water made me a bit nervous. Solid footage.
Why? 2 inches of water is going to sweep the car into outer space?

Interesting video. Good to see it from above. As a Brit, I find it amazing that there are no buildings to be seen anywhere. I wish I could look out over land devoid of human interference. Here, everywhere belongs to someone and consequently has rules attached i.e. No trespassing, no dogs, no walking, no picnics, no ball games, keep to the path, no fishing etc etc.
Kathryn Stone, I like your comment. I drive for a living, so I have opportunity often to see endless miles of land virtually void of human interference. It's when I feel closest to God.

Unfortunately, like many Americans, I haven't traveled abroad enough. Your perspective is fascinating & valuable. I'm also Native American, and the idea that people could "own" the land (Mother Earth) never made sense to me. It is an anathema to me.
Before the two-leggeds arrived, who owned the land then? How can someone own something that doesn't belong to them?
I am blessed to be in a country where I can gaze upon expansive wilderness, all the way to the horizon.
The desert landscape looks terrible I don't like wide exposed places. That's why people should buy my :Impact" a James Grider novel on Amazon and linked in my videos so I can afford to move into a forested area.
Lots of Brits seem to live in the Kingman (Mohave County) area of Arizona, must be something that many of you long for.

The shakiness is caused by a bad propeller or they need balancing. Is it a Phantom series drone, judging by the camera adjustment?
He's got a Phantom 3, and it's been crashed. He obviously didn't replace the rotors.
Would have liked to have gone higher to get a more comprehensive view of the flooding, and to have followed both the origin and destination of the flow.
The drone used has very limited range.
Seems like the whole point of using a drone.
Shows the power of water! No matter how we try to make it go where we want its unpredictable. Goes the quickest route.

i live in arizona, and although we dont see a lot of rain, flash floods are a real issue. The dirt is hard and does not absorb much water, where like a rain forest can take rain every day.

Where did this start, were there big rains further up as this ground is so dry?
Most of the lowlands, the ground is mainly hardpan.
It's almost impossible to dig through, and very little loose material on the top, if any.
The water runs off it as if it were a sold rock.
The rain is likely from one of the nearby mountains.
It can run across that hard ground for miles.

I was planning a bike ride through there and heard about the problem of the flash flooding and how I'd have to find someone with a truck to get me through.
I have travelled that road many times!
Which road is it exactly? We grew up outside of Hackberry. My sis and I went to school there till they shut it down. I want to say this was the road the school bus took 🤷🏼♀️

We get Flashier Floods here in Texas! 9 out of 10 times when the flood is done there's no road or anything else left. But I gave it a thumbs up.

Rain could be hundreds of km away the ground is to dry to absorb it properly so it just keeps flowing

What type of drone are you piloting as you gave no information.
Looks like a DJI Phantom 3, with rotors that have been damaged in a crash and were never replaced.
Hmmm ... surprised there wasn't more jello in that case , I didn't pay any attention to the props to be honest, just scouting around the screen with a magnifying glass lol

I was crossing a DRY river bed in Aravaipa Canyon going to Bonita to get mail in early 1980's. Could hear it! saw trickles. In less then 1 min. my truck was engulfed with flood water. That fast. Got on the top of the roof of the truck . Jumped as hard and as much as I could to reach dry ground. Ended up about 100 or so feet down river and managed BY THE GRACE OF GOD ALMIGHTY and my LORD JESUS CHRIST to make it to the shore. I looked in amazement as my truck was stuck in one place, wedged against a HUGE boulder flipping around and around. Would not trade that awesome experience for all the tea in China.

I suspect the mountains it sprang from were too far away behind the point of view--but that would be another good video.

Hey mate, next time you might want to take a few lessons on drone operation and videography before posting your footage up here.. And before you ask, I am a professional architectural/aerial photographer who also specialises in 4K drone videography. I am also a licensed pilot for real .
If your drone has a "Cinematic" video recording mode then use it. It can help you a little, but learning how to best frame the video shots is an artistic talent that really can't be taught. A golden rule in videography is that slower is better. This means slow smooth video camera movements always create better footage..
Everybody's a drone pilot now. Who said YT videos have to be shot by fully licensed professionals. Let the person express himself no matter the skill. This wasn't a tutorial on how to capture cinematic drone footage. Might have been a kid. Or just a hobbyist looking to share his experience. You should have done this, you should have done that. Want it your way ?...go do it yourself.
