    The Mayday Mayfly is an attractor style mayfly nymph imitation that has served me well for many years. I first started tying and fishing the Mayday Mayfly right out of college around 2010. The tensile underbody on the abdomen was inspired by Lance Egan's Rainbow Warrior. This was before Lance and I had become friends, and his flies were already a staple in my fly box. After some trial and error with both materials and color schemes, I landed with a few variations that consistently fished well for me. I liked the idea of a rib that both segments and attracts, and the Simi Seal dubbing added a super buggy element to the pattern. But one of my favorite aspects of this fly is how quick and easy it is to tie. There are only a few materials, and all of them are fairly easy to manipulate onto the hook when tying. It is also extremely durable and will hold up to being chewed on by fish after fish when tied the way shown in this video. For days on the water when searching for fish, this is a go-to pattern that consistently gets the job done for me.
    Recipe:
    Hook: Umpqua XC400BL Jig 14-18
    Bead: Gold Slotted Tungsten
    Thread: Veevus 14/0 - Fl. Orange
    Tail: Coq De Leon
    Abdomen: Holographic Tensile - Brown - Size Medium
    Rib: UTC Ultrawire - Hot Orange - Size Brassie
    Coating: Solarez Bone Dry UV or Raid Zap Thin UV
    Thorax: Solarez - Simi Seal Dubbing - Brown

    I’m glad to see that you use a bobbin cradle
    It’s really necessary for me too ( with a half hitch) Bobbin cradle is an excellent option in fly tying

    I got the eBook. I'm well familiar with many of the flies in them as I've successfully fished with them. One fly that'd make my list in that book is Olsen's Crossover Nymph. It's similar to the Blowtorch, as you know. The Crossover Nymph caught literally hundreds of fish for me last year in Montana. It was one of my top producing flies along with the Frenchie. The version I like the best is the Plastique Frenchie ( RUclips: "Fly Tying Plastique Frenchie | Hackles & Wings" ). It's very similar to your Mayday Mayfly and it's incredibly easy to tie. Between those two flies, I caught about 80% of my fish last year.
    Just want to add that the quality of your video is just excellent!

    Do you think brassie copper wire would be a decent substitute for the hot orange wire?

      You bet, I’m sure that would fish fantastically!

    What size tungsten bead for size 14 hook ???

    • @GilbertRowley
      @GilbertRowley  26 дней назад +1

      2.8mm or 3.3mm if you’re tying on a jig hook and want to up the weight. Either size works great, I tie 14’s with both so I have two weight options with the same size 14 pattern.

    Hey Gilbert this simi seal dubbing is harder to dub than ice dub

    • @GilbertRowley
      @GilbertRowley  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yes it is, you are correct, but it’s also more stringy and buggy. Makes a real nice collar 👍 Any dubbing will work, the simi seal is my preference.

    Where on earth did you find the color "Hot Copper"?

    • @GilbertRowley
      @GilbertRowley  Год назад +2

      That is actually a great question! It’s actually Hot Orange, also hard to find… but it does exist, whereas Hot Copper probably isn’t even a thing! 😁
