That harmony at 1:12 gets to me every time. It happens four times in the opening chorus. It is supposedly a 13th chord with the "wrong" note at the bottom....
Absolutely smashing! rendition and 'unpacking' of the opening chorus of the St. Matthew Passion. Is the whole performance somewhere online? This is so wonderful!
Um die Barriere zwischen Sängern und Zuhörern durchzubrechen, damit wir uns vollständig mit den Sängern identifizieren können. Der stille, traurige Mann wird vielleicht im Rest des Werkes Jesus singen.
Bach wrote the St Matthew passion for 2 regular choirs (sopranos, altos, tenors and basses), plus a small ‘soprano choir’, which only performs in the opening chorus. In this performance, that ‘soprano choir’ is the boys you see at the front. The 2 other choirs start to sing together and you see them move to the back and ‘separate’ towards the end of this video. The boys then disappear as their ‘job’ is done. In Bach’s time, the soprano and alto parts of the other choirs were also sung by boys as women were not allowed to sing sacred music in churches but that is of course no longer the case. Some performances are still sung by ‘men and boys only’ choirs, for instance the Tölzer choir. There is a recording under Harnoncourt on RUclips of that. I think this recording by the Luthers Bach Ensemble is outstanding, I wish I could see the entire performance.
