Sandy Warner is the name of the model on the Martin Denny album, she was on a total of 16 of his albums (I think I have 14 of them), plus on the covers of other artists records too. She was also a singer and put out an album under her name entitled: 'Steve Allen Presents Fair and Warner.' And she did some acting too. Great video on Exotica, nice selection and I'm happy to say I have 9 of them, only missing the Stanley Black. One of my all time favorite exotica albums is Prado Perez's 'Exotica Suite of the Americas,' especially for the sixteen minute opening track of the same name. Good stuff, the whole album is on RUclips.
Martin Denny and Arthur Lynan are Soooo AWESOME, -I remember going to Hawaii for the first time and smoked some KILLER weed to relax listening to Martin Denny, Everything was in technocolor and I felt I was in a Walt Disney cartoon movie with exotic birds flying all around me -What a Trip!!!
Eric, I hope later you do a Top 10 on Easy Listening/Lounge Music like Henry Mancini, Al Hirt,Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass,Ray Coniff, Paul Mauriat etc.
remember my dad had a good collection of these mostly Martin Denny. inherited the collection. loved them then, love them now. never stopped playing them. think of how it sounded to 1950-60's ears. wild.
Your description of Exotica is perfect - always liked it when it was on TV shows in the 70s, especially when they went to Hawaii (like Brady Bunch). I have most of what you shown; I became a big fan when the space age bachelor revival came in the 90s with all the Esquivel reissues.
Hi Eric. I just finished watching you on Concert Buddies The Mind Of The Record Collector. Congratulations on your incredible RUclips success! Hands down this is the greatest video on exotica vinyl records on RUclips! Fantastic job, Eric! For some strange (or exotic) reason I get more excited about finding minty copies of exotica records in the wild than any other genre. It’s strange but I do. Last week I found a mint copy of Arthur Lyman’s Hawaiian Sunset Vol 1! I’ll now be on the lookout for Vol 2. I just subbed your channel. I’m currently digging in a collection of over 50000 records! I’m hoping to find some exotica gems in there. ✌🏽 Steve
I got into this genre back in the mid 90s when I discovered a CD series called "Ultralounge" which featured titles such as Bachelor Pad Royale, Mondo Exotica etc and they were all compilations of the likes of Les Baxter, Martin Denny and their like.
Fascinating dive into this under-appreciated genre. The Beach Boys got into this territory on the "Friends" album with "Diamond Head"... fantastic track.
I would highly recommend pretty much most Webley Edwards albums. While a lot of the music he presents is more "traditional-ish" Hawaiian music, several of them delve into the more popular Exotica themes and styles, especially the album Exotic Instrumentals. But all of them really convey a great atmosphere of what Hawaiian music was like post World War II into the 60s.
As a young teen i would dance around the house with this music full blast when my parents were gone. I'm headed to the vinyl shop to get me some more of that!
This was so inspirational for me. I just got my first record player, and this video was my guide and guru to chasing that exotica sound that I crave. I would LOVE a sequel about Space Age Pop/Lounge to tie everything together.
Frank Comstock's 'Music from Outer Spaxe' may be my favorite instrumental album of all time. The band Tipsy led me to Baxter and these terrifically transportive space pop sounds.
IMO Latin-Esque is optimum Esquivel in that it's him at his most "I've got the entire stereo field and boy am I gonna use it" hyper. That said if I had to choose a favourite Esquivel LP I'd go with Infinity In Sound Volume 2 or perhaps Exploring New Sounds In Hi-Fi rather than Other Worlds Other Sounds as they both not only showcase his imagination as an arranger and the skill of those 1950's RCA sound engineers but hold together as beginning to end listenable albums better than anything else in his catalogue. That said other than the bombastic and boring Strings Aflame all Esquivel's USA albums are worthy of our time, including the out of character small band jazz of Four Corners Of The World.
The UK Rev-Ola Records CDs of the first 10 Martin Denny contain both the original mono takes and rerecorded stereo versions on a single disc. All are from the original masters except one (I forget which) that EMI couldn't locate the original mono tapes for so was mastered from a 50's LP pressing. Also, I believe Sandy Warner features on the first 14 Martin Denny LP covers rather than all of them (I have the figure 39 in my head but I'm sure it's closer to 30) She also made her own LP for which Martin Denny wrote the liner notes.
I have all those on Spotify, but I really want them on vinyl, I've got some Martin Denny on vinyl, but lately I've been stumbling across some good ones at small Thrifts stores, on the more wealthier side of town, which isn't very far for me, I also score a lot of them on cassette. GREAT CHOICES all of those, like I said I have all those on my Spotify, these are hard to come by out in the wild.
Fun video will def look out for some of these. May I suggest two other artists u might dig. 60’s Sergio Mendes. So 60’s it brings u there. For a more modern take and a downright weird but great lp try Stan Ridgway’s The Way I Feel Tonight. See what you think.
There's a great new exotica band called Ape. Their album is called "Supersonic" During their shows, they have a tiki carver on stage. Check RUclips to see. Great video btw!
You can hear where Brian Wilson referenced songs like "Pet Sounds" and "Let's go away for a while". Good video.
Two of my favorites are "Hypnotique" by Martin Denny and "Voodoo" by Robert Drasnin.
The soundtrack to season 1 of The White Lotus puts a modern spin to the genre: some really nice exotica flavors
Another FANTASTIC record is Robert Drasnin - Voodoo! I just have began my exotica vinyl search.
Anything from Les Baxter is amazing
Yma Sumac can also be heard on the "The big Lebowsky" soundtrack. That's how I met this genre.

YES YMA SUMAC FOR THE WIN

This music reminds me of Ren & Stimpy!
I just got a copy of Arthur Lyman"s record called "Bwana À " at Goodwill. Great stuff!
BWA-A-A-A-A-N-AAAAAAAAAA…
remember my dad had a good collection of these mostly Martin Denny. inherited the collection. loved them then, love them now. never stopped playing them. think of how it sounded to 1950-60's ears. wild.
This is a genre I've been looking at for a while now, definitely gonna look into some of these
Taboo 2 is worth a listen as well.

Great video and selections… but I was surprised not to see Robert Drasnin Voodoo on there. Keep up the great work!

Great production on this video. Really well done. Love it!
Les Baxter's - Ports of Pleasure is probably my absolute favorite.

I love learning about new (to me) genres! Awesome!

Always love seeing people appreciate Yma Sumac. Her albums are hard to find on vinyl where I am. Really hope I can find one some day.
Love Exotica!! Found all of those LPs back in the 90s for a buck a piece!! Big fan of Korla Pandit. PLAY LOUD
I love exotica. I have several stations I created on Pandora to listen to this type of music.
Yeup, you're right about that 'Hilo March' at the end of the Lyman LP. It sticks out like a sore thumb. I'll look out for some of those other albums.
Taboo is Lyman's first album. I know that Leis of Jazz has an earlier catalog number, but I looked through old newspaper and Taboo came first.
That beach on the back of "Exotica Suite" is Paradise cove in Malibu. Famous location of pinup photographers and a beach boys album.
Now this topic fits you perfectly. Would love to see more videos in this vein.
Loved this one, great info. Thanks!

Big eye opener for me. Thank you!
Good stuff mate! Always enjoy your videos, cheers
Great albums and great selections. Thumbs up! Trish
Arthur Lyman's its this my favorites albums
Class selections. My go to is Robert Mitchum's _Calypso..Is Like So._
I have all those on Spotify, but I really want them on vinyl, I've got some Martin Denny on vinyl, but lately I've been stumbling across some good ones at small Thrifts stores, on the more wealthier side of town, which isn't very far for me, I also score a lot of them on cassette. The stereo version of that Stanley Black album has some of my favorite ping-ponging
Great video ...Please do a video on the super rare exotica albums too. That would be super cool and interesting.
Fun video will def look out for some of these.
May I suggest two other artists u might dig.
60’s Sergio Mendes. So 60’s it brings u there. For a more modern take and a downright weird but great lp try
Stan Ridgway’s The Way I Feel Tonight.
See what you think.

Great as usual
I love Exotica just discovered it a couple years ago from a fellow deadhead ✌️😁 he said if you like the dead you love Martin Denny.
Quiet Village is my fave Exotica album!
Check out Sun Ra’s Exotica album from 2017 as well!
There's a great new exotica band called Ape. Their album is called "Supersonic" During their shows, they have a tiki carver on stage. Check RUclips to see. Great video btw!
I wonder if he'll ever review the "Let it be" vinyl super deluxe box set
