    Playing PCE-CD games (and to a lesser extent playing Sega CD games) feels like a glimpse into an alternate universe where CD-based consoles became a thing in 1990. Some of the best CD games (I'm looking at you Ys) are incredible in a way that nothing else at the time was. Ys I+II earned the same score as SMB3 from Famitsu, and playing it, back when that actually meant soenthing.

    I recently started emulating the PC Engine and playing its incredible catalogue of games for the first time and I feel like I've discovered a whole new world I never knew existed. I can't imagine how it must've been for the people who grew up playing it. Super excited to see you cover it

    A few years ago I did some casual emulator-exploration of the PC Engine library and was truly astonished by how many really cool, really unknown games it had. For someone who grew up in the US encountering Nintendo everywhere but having almost no exposure to the TurboGrafx-16, it felt like stumbling into an amazing alternate timeline of game history.
    This is a worthy topic and I’m glad you’re doing it!

    Yup, this made the most sense in hindsight; thought initially you'd either pick this or something you haven't talked about in the last video. PC-Engine here in (most of) Europe existed mainly among import collectors; other than that, it was a very, very minor system (especially compared with the Mega Drive). I like quite a few of the games though, and the CD stuff still looks/sounds really good (there 'will' be many visual novels and quite a few RPGs though!) Looking forward to the next few years of PCE.

      In America, I never even heard of the TurboGrafx-16 while it was on the market; all the TV advertising was Nintendo vs. Sega... then vs. Sony. Sounds like if anyone here remembers it, it was mainly just for Bonk?

They made one batch for a full European release and backed out when they saw the low North American sales. They were mostly "grey imports" (unofficial imports) later on. So, terrible performance compared to Mega Drive which was quite popular, and even SNES (which was less popular).

    For a swede like me PC Engine was something I was completely unaware of growing up. It was only in the early 2000s I heard of it and it seemed like this mystical piece of alternate reality.
    Now I have a collection of mostly Hu-cards. The console is more known in the west thanks to the internet, but I still consider it one of my most exotic machines. It’s always fun to hear somebody talking about it, so I’m glad you picked this subject!

  • @Mitsuraga
    @Mitsuraga 17 дней назад +2

    As a die-hard SEGA Saturn fan, I have a great deal of respect for the PC Engine. That may not immediately make sense, but if you know a fair amount about each system's reputation, regional legacy, and fanbase, I think it should be clear enough.

    • @mariusamber3237
      @mariusamber3237 17 дней назад +2

      Both platforms are sadly horribly underappreciated in the West... well, PCE just sold a pitiful amount of units and is mostly just unknown, unless you're into history of gaming, whereas the Saturn was completely overshadowed by PS1 in Europe and PS1/N64 in the US. Too bad, they both deserved better.

    My favorite retro system! I've been curious for many years about a multitude of games on it that are inaccessible to me due to the language barrier, and its fan-TL scene has been slower than other consoles to catch on. One other hardware difference between PCE and TG-16 is the controller port. TG-16 uses a different kind. This was fixed for the US Duo, though. Anyway, thank you in advance for your efforts.

      Here in Europe it was essentially a unicorn; mostly just decently popular in the import scene, but overall nowhere near the level of Mega Drive or even SNES (which was less popular here than MD). IIRC 4/5th of its library are Japan exclusives, so I bet we'll see a lot of RPGs and visual novels once the CD format is firmly established. Wrong to say about HuCard and don't mention Sega's SG-1000 and Master System games on MyCards!
    And also this card technology even was patented by Mitsubishi!

    You are a madman! But I’m here for it. Do your thing! (I thought it’d be TurboGrafx-16 just to limit the scope, but I’m happy to be wrong!)

    PC Engine Super CD Rom^2 was my third console. I also had GT. I'm looking forward to the new series.

    Yay i kind of called it, thank you thank you for this. The PCE is fantastic, I'd put it between the SFC and the Megadrive in Japan as the audio visual package and game quality was remarkable and holds up very well, better than a lot of Sega stuff with the corners they cut. Shame the US market got so many dregs and odd exclusions Japan got that would have easily localized as the variety and quality was just there.
    I've had a Duo, DuoJ, Core and CG2 over the years and enjoyed them so much, but the disgusting toxicity of the scalper market put me out of it a few years back, traded laterally kind of to a PCE Mini and enjoy that, then hakchi'd a spare SNES classic edition I found with the card set for the system that way. Shady, sure, care? Nope. :) NEC reissues (Konami) it proper to combat the scummy sellers I'd return.

    9:55 theres actually a pretty easy mod out there called the TurboNanza that gives you rgb, composite and even s-video! Might be enough time between now and the first super cd game you record to where you can mod it!

      Not compatible with the Duo, I'm afraid. And I'm already using a plug in solution on the original PC Engine.

      @RndStranger I looked through the git just now and looks like it's been updated somewhat recently to be compatible with duo/r/rx systems! For sure NOT as easy as the regular PC engine for installation but still doable

      @@pcb123lol Problem is, for most people, you need soldering skills and proper materials and a fat wallet if you screw things up, even more if you need to do extra fiddling to make it work (I have soldering skills, and it made me shiver).
      @RndStranger You managed to get really good quality footage from your capture devices when doing the FC videos. I'm sure it will be fine when you get to the CD games on the Duo.

    A quick google search says that PC Engine has 678 games which is 1.858 games per day. please don't overwork yourself. I rather enjoy your steady, detailed output of videos.

    My entire opinion about this console has always been "Looks cool, but sucks that it never came out over here.".

    i find funny how the hardware was "Tailor made" for videogames... yet it also for some reason lacked some things the Famicom was designed to do without much effort.

      Could you elaborate on that? I can’t think of anything really important that it couldn’t do that the NES did.
