I do not DNF. I am retired now but had a agreement with my husband who was also an avid reader that we wouldn’t buy books because I could see over a lifetime how many we would collect. So we tried to always use the library. But even with conscious non-purchase when we downsized our home and had an estate sale and then a garage sale we landed up with so so many books mostly received as gifts. I have kept track of my reading by hand written list of titles and authors of all the books I’ve read so I have file boxes of those then switch to saving cover images in a computer file. I’m new to book tubes since May be a few months. So for the first time I’m adding my personal one through five rating.

Oh man, I really love this comment. Thank you for taking the time to write. I'm so happy you're here with us on Booktube. This space has helped me to create so many useful habits (for the better!)
p.s. I would've absolutely come to your garage and estate sale : )))

I love how your tips are actually original. I tend to stumble upon a lot of of these videos on "how to read more" and some people tend to give out some very obvious advice.
This on the contrary was very inspiring ☺️

Hi Ana, writing from Madrid, Spain. I think this is my first comment ever on RUclips (despite being a user of it for 8+years!), I am a passive watcher never commenting but felt like I needed to! I discovered your channel a few weeks ago and I can'ttttt stop binging on all your videos! You're content is fresh, funny (sometimes hilarious), interesting, entertaining and overall I just love it. I have written down many books I would like to read thanks to your recommendations. I am super motivated towards reading more, just reached my 25 goal on books today and two more months to dive into new ones :) finally, absolutely non related but you've also encouraged me with my No.1 2022 goal which is stop bitting my nails and polish them with sassy and *cool* colors to boost my confidence, watching yours made me really jealous (in a good sense), so the other day I treated myself and bought a nice fuchsia and a vibrant spooky orange hehe
Honestly I just wanted to say I am so very happy to have found you in this huge world called internet and feel you like a e-reader-friend.
    :)))

!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh my gosh, what a wonderful comment to read (and re-read). Thank you so, so much for being comfortable and compelled to make your first comment here. It really means a lot to me to see that you're moved by this little corner of the internet and you're accomplishing goals you've set for yourself. Anything is possible! (now I just need to repeat that to myself 😄)
ALSO, can I just say I'm currently wearing a fuchsia color on my nails right now. MIND READ! Wear those color with pride, baby! You deserve it!!!
      Sending hugs!

Get an ereader. Not a phone. Not tablet. A dedicated device. Kindle, Kobo, or other. You can carry a lifetime’s supply of books in your hand. You can’t do any else but read and stay focused.

YES such a huge proponent of just putting away books that aren't working, or at least allowing yourself to start something else - I find that an undesirable book is honestly the biggest obstacle to reading for most people

For me it’s the monetary commitment that sometimes keeps me from reading. I work a minimum wage job while going to school, which means that it takes me about 1 hour of work to earn enough money to buy a brand new paperback (assuming the average brand new, recently published paperback is about $15). I buy most of my books secondhand to try and reduce the strain on my wallet, but also because I’m one of those grungy trolls who likes the well-loved look of thrifted books. My most recent discovery is the local library near where I live. I know I’m not the first to say this and I’m certainly not the last, but I cannot stress how much THIS HAS CHANGED MY LITERARY LIFE. It’s so nice to browse books knowing that there is no financial risk in trying one out, and because of this I’ve discovered a lot of new favorites that I wouldn’t have thought were worth the $8-$20 (sometimes even $30!) in a bookstore. Completely removed the guilt of DNFing a book for me. I know this is nothing new, but if you haven’t tried it yet, check out your local library. Seriously.
Also, Ana, I love all your videos but this one really slayed. ❤

FIRST OFF, your username is THE ICON OF THE YEAR. Second, agree 1000000% on buyers remorse for new books/not financially being able to get behind new releases (also, good on you for working through school--such a hard task, but you can do it!!) I've been using libraries for audiobooks and I can't imagine my world without it now. Thrift stores for books are the best, so I fully ~* understand ~* you.

Thankful to the algorithm (turns out it can be good) for bringing my newbie reading self here. I’m slowly chipping away at old false ideas that I’m not intellectual enough to be a Reader. Your tips, along with my fellow commenters, have been helpful and motivating. Onwards, baby. Onwards!💗

Excellent tips Ana!! I have been an avid reader my entire life and I can literally relate to every one of your reading hacks 😊Reading is such a personal journey and I can’t imagine life without books. I also believe in DNF’ing a book that I don’t like. There are too many great books to waste time reading one that I’m not enjoying. Libraries and book clubs are great ways to interact with other book lovers. Happy Reading Girl! ❤️📚

Ok, I have a bee in my bonnet relating to your point about keeping a book with you always. It’s such a great tip and one I try to exercise where possible and you’re right about ideally being able have one in your pocket. But that’s the thing that now and again really gets to me: where are the small books for our pockets?! Why are most books made so chunky these days? I have a few gorgeous small editions made in the early 1900s that are just the ideal size but it just doesn’t seem to be a practice of publishing these days to make smaller books.
Thank you Ana for another brilliant video! Spot on tips and stunning curls as always x

AGREED! I always have a small tote with me, so it makes the transportation of novels a bit easier, but every time I find a novel juuuust small enough to fit into a pocket, it changes the entire dynamic. For the better! Older novels just got it. The necessity was much clearer.
      Thanks for being here, baby!!

Great tips. I'm glad the first one was about reading what you know or think you'll like (based on what you do and do not like in terms of writing style, genre, plot, narration, etc) and *not* because a title or author's publisher has a huge marketing budget. It might be easier for someone who's been a life-long leisure reader to get back into reading after a long time away. And yet, someone who's read novels primarily for school assignments may be more open to a wider range of narrative tropes, themes, and genre conventions. I believe firmly that it's okay to do a double-take and read the summary or first page of a book just because you think it's pretty (and then decide it's not for you because you didn't like the first page or the synopsis).

    • @AnaWallaceJohnson

Привіт Анна ! ok I can't wait until Sunday.... I've been an avid reader for so many years. My highest score is 160 books a year. I'm usually closer to a 100. Except for this year ...I've had my first huge slump last year in November for a month and a half. And again this year. It was linked to my job - during a hectic time and my mind was completely overwhelmed by my job (with big deadlines) and I couldn't read anything. I could watch you ... YT .. but I couldn't read one single line. It was frightening. But now I know that thrillers (crime novels) are my way to get back into reading or non fiction. I've had another slump in August. But I don't want to put any pressure. I probably have read around 45 books only this year, which is really a low number for me, but I'm fine with it. Your tips are really good ! Love you shirt. I can't use audiobooks - I've done it once and liked because it was the perfect way to read The Handmaid's Tale (Claire Danes) because the story is actually recorded on cassette tapes so you could hear someone rewinding the tapes and I love Danes but otherwise I don't like someone's else voice - the only voice I want to hear is mine, does that make sense ?? LOL and I also DNF - I used to read the whole book but what was the point ? I always read at least 50 pages because some books are pretty slow to get settled, right ? November 1st, I did exactly like you do : I read a whole book in one day. I love those days !

160!!! that's amazing and good on you! It's comparable to running a marathon, in my opinion! Slumps come over me all the time. Right now I'm in a fervent reading fury and it came out of nowhere ( I think it's the weather! ) I loved a crime/thriller novel this month (I'm sure you can guess which :)) )
      hugs!
