    Sometimes when they “bite” they are just nibbling out of curiosity, so if they bite you don’t assume they hate you, it’s common to have a taster hedgie!

He was just a baby and getting to know me and I wasn't mad at him for it. Second time was I was holding him right after dinner and my hands smelled like food. He barely bit down and stopped when he realized it was just me. 😂 I don't hand feed him, so I guess he just got excited.

    I had to pick up a wild hedgehog with malnutrition, since it would have not survived winter,...
    Its basicly that mean unhandled hedgehog, the worst case szenario, if it had been a pet not a wild animal.
    It might curl up fast never exposes his belly etc. , but it never bites which i'm totally happy about.
    Like said in the video, it certainly must be a positive conditioning response.
    About the wild one:
    It was at 281 gramms.
    Maybe arround 6-7 months old i guess
    .
    The normal weight should have been 500 ( -900 for an adult) gramms with this spezies ( Northern Germany)
    at least thats what the internet told me so far.
    The hips had been all skin and bone,
    It is eating well now which is a relieve ,I've watched your videos about feeding them, it worked super well, it has been very picky at the start.
    I bathed it 2 times to get rid of flees and to be able to pinpoint ticks and pick them off,
    after that it let me handle it, even i do it as less as possible ( searching for parasites, weighting and such ) since i want it to go back into the wild again.
    Every time i feed it i put something inside the enclosure i've worn, to condition feedingtimes to my scent so that it stays a little bit more relaxed arround me.
    I keep it in a 21°C warm but silent place with the least ammount of traffic( me walking through my home etc.)
    Again your videos might be about pets, but have been a great help saving a wild one !

    So here’s another piece of advice, you can kind of push your hand or wherever you’ve been paying towards your hedgehog so then your hedgehog will most likely release wherever you have been bitten. Again this is just a little heads up that she didn’t add and it could be helpful to you guys or the people that just saw this. I’m getting a hedgehog in maybe two months, so I’ve been doing research and that was a solution.

    I just recently purchased a hedgehog, and I'm not had experience with one past the age of 6 and it belonging to a friend. My little guy was cuddling up with me went inside my shirt and I think he licked me before he bit me, but I was more concerned for the fact that he didn't break skin cuz I'm used to rats, mice, cats, and dogs. Thank you for the information that it normally doesn't break skin, cuz it was weird how it honestly felt like getting your finger pinched in the door, but it was on my side. Probably shouldn't have been letting him that close to my skin, but I tend to use very floral hand soap and I know he likes that smell, but I want him to also know what I as a person smell like when I eventually run out of it. Especially cuz he hasn't licked my hands with the smell just comes up to me.

I read if that happens, you need to blow in their face and they'll let go. He got me twice and the second time he bit me, I was blowing in his little face so much he immediately let me go. I found that the tube she sleeps in had a ton of blood. I am so concerned... besides she has not being eating much this past few days... I woke her in the morning to mouth feed her with mealworms and thank God she took them. I am going to mouth feed her for now, I guess. Tonight I will try something I read on the internet; treat that injury with hydrogen peroxide. I know it's something you can do with people but apparently, it is also ok for a hedgehog. I don't hand feed her, and she's still getting used to my smell. I'm working on handling her and bonding with her. I can say from what I've seen with her so far, she's very curious and can be pretty friendly when I do bring her out. I can say that your videos have shown to be helpful.
    The first time I brought her home, she was sniffing around and did huff a bit once I moved her from my bed to her cage. But, after a little, she was perfectly fine inside it.

      I can answer some, I don't have a hedgehog but I've watched tons of videos of experts so here are some answers: if you get stung by a quill, of course it's not like you don't feel anything, it stings a bit but it's not really hard to endure. Clean them not too often, when you can visually see they're dirty and you don't have to use soap everytime because soap can dry their skin out. Also, DON'T leave your hedgehog alone if you go on vacation! Travelling with them is quite easy, just talk about it with the vet.

    • @ekk4674
      @ekk4674 4 года назад

      About the heater, they should have a normal temperature so they don't need heating but if they try hibernation (if they're pigmy african hedgehogs they shouldn't hibernate, they could starve to death) you should try to warm them back to normal body temperature by using your body heat or a heating pad (20-30 minutes). When they attempt hibernation they usually feel colder to the touch and become wobbly and react very slowly.

    My hedgehog has issues with being skittish, he was from a bad home and know one would take him so I did, ( I’m 14) he tries to anoint with everyone he meets and ends up biting them, it’s why I don’t like to introduce him to a lot of people. He doesn’t do it with me anymore after I started to tap his paw when he tried to bite but he is incredibly skittish and it becomes a real problem as he doesn’t come out at night more often anymore. I can relate to yours and Blaise’s situation so much. Sherlock ( my hedgehog) is handled often as-well. If you can give me any information that would be great 👍 I also have rats (Fred and George) I would love more rat videos. Xx -Kara

    Morty is just a really grumpy dude so he has a biting tendency. I try to still hold him bare handed but honestly most of the time I have to use a cloth of some sort because I feel as if I have no choice. Especially when I first pick him up because that is when he most likely bites. I don’t think he hates me but he is just about to turn a year old and I have only had him since February. So he is still at the point of getting use to me alone with him just getting over one of his phases of quilling.

I’m thinking it might just be all the smells that he’s experiencing that he’s not used to, since I got him from someone that wasn’t taking care of him. I’m not completely sure why he does it though. I’m just learning to have tough skin 😬.

    For many of them, they hate baths so much that just the sound of the faucet being turned on will freak them out enough to let go.
    Other methods include: Putting some alcohol on a q-tip and touching their nose with it, making a loud noise to startle them, spraying them with a small, reusable perfume atomizer filled with water, putting lemon or bitterant on your hands and pushing your finger toward the hedgehog when they bite, essentially causing them to gag.
    I've learned a lot of it has to do with how much a breeder handles the babies around 3 to 4 weeks old, and whether or not they correct the babies when they bite to anoint. Some breeders think this behavior is just too cute and allow it to progress to the point where you have a mouthy animal that becomes a concern once they grow teeth. I haven't produced a biter since I started dissuading babies from seeing humans as chew toys. It doesn't take long for a baby to learn that bite = loud noise.

    My hedgehog only bites if I continuously pull him away from something, like keeping him from going under the couch for like 10 minutes, so obviously he does it because I'm annoying him but could it also be because he isn't handled enough/tame?

    Hello! My hedgie is a rescue and we believe he was abused profusely to a point he needs to bite, he does not pop or hiss at all.. he just bites, I adore him and I don’t plan on giving up on him. But i need some tips on how to handle this, he’s bit a lot, blowing has actually made him bite me more often so that sucks. And poking his nose sounds like I will lose a finger to him... help!

      I had an abused hedgehog with one eye. His previous owner/home sent me some pretty sad pictures. They also used leather gloves to handle him. He bit me and I had to go to the hospital for blood poisoning the next day. I can totally appreciate your situation. I had him for 3 1/2 years until he passed. I made it work by never putting my hands near his mouth. I never blew on him, and used prevention as my failsafe method. I loved him dearly and am even considering adding a hedgehog to my home again. I would pick him up in his beds and transfer him to a fleece for bonding. I would pick him up upon with my hands on either side of his tummy. He eventually laid his quills flat, but I never trusted him to not bite me like that again. He was trying to burrow in my couch and I put my hand out to stop him and that's why he bit me. I hope that you find something that works for you and your little one. As I said prevention was my method and it worked very well. I never let him come into contact with my skin again.

    I'm a new hedgie owner and I have a few questions. The biggest one is that I'm afraid he is not as active as he should be. I've had him for a week now (bonding is going well, I'm able to hold him without him getting upset and poking me) but he just seems to hide and sleep all the time. I have a thermometer and a heating lamp. It's averaging about 79 degrees. He's not using his wheel. Should I be worried about this? His name is Rupert, btw.

    My new hedgie has latched on and bit me hard dozens and dozens of times, leaving bloodied, bruised bite marks all over! I was so exasperated. I blow at her hard and say no; the rest of the time I’m peeling off jaws of steel. She came from the exotic shop with mites and on a poor diet, no heat source, etc. just staying as calm as I can.

    Tori! I hadn’t heard you mention your husband before! I honestly thought you were like 18! 😝 but I was also thinking about, while watching this video, I thinn what you’re doing to educate people about hedgehogs is so special and I just hope everyone can appreciate your hard work. Also, I have had some really teachable moments with my own pets and other people in the past, and in this way I hope you know Draco will live on forever and ever, and the compassion and care you’ve taught to people has probably improved a lot of hedgehog’s lives, and so in a very big way Draco has done a lot for other hedgehogs, and I just wanted to remind you of that today. Thanks again!

    My hedgehog seems to only bite MY fingers. If anyone else holds her or plays with her she doesn't care about their hands. But when I hold her and pet her she goes for my fingers. I've changed my soap like 10 times too so I'm not really sure what else to do. It's only my finger tips too, its the strangest thing.

      @@till287 my hedgehog is extremely social. She rarely hisses and pops so shes really easy to hold. But the only thing is the biting. Ive tried not to react but she does it without warning and usually she bites so hard that she breaks skin. Ive kind of adapted to it by never letting my figertips near her face and nose bc i know thatll make her try and bite me. Shes just such an odd girl lol. Im so sorry theyve made you cry though );

    • @Alliooooops
      @Alliooooops 5 лет назад

      @@till287 it took about 2 weeks. Then again i did her her from a breeder who really socialized her all her life. I think i got really lucky with her because ive never had issues holding her, touching her or anything. Her only flaw is the biting. However, my first hedgehog (who i still have) it took a lot longer to get her to trust me. It took forever to get her out of the shoe box i put her in to take her home because she absolutely wouldnt let me hold her. After days of not being able to get near her i kinda just made a daily routine with her. When it was 8 pm, i would turn off the lights, pick up the bed she was sleeping in and feed her some worms. Eventually over time i was able to use my hands to feed her the worms. Then she was slowly letting me touch her head or face without popping. Then i was able to pet down her back without popping. Then pick her up. Now, she still gets scared at first when i get near her, but once she sees that its me shes totally fine being held, pet, and everything. Sorry that was pretty long but i hope some of that helps!

      My hedgehog Piper is quite friendly with me. She lets me take her out of her burrow after she's able to smell my fingers. She lets me pet her nose and head with my finger. She's not too interested in belly rubs tho because she doesn't like being on her back. The only time she's nipped at me is when I forgot to wash the smell of food off my hands. Or once when I was using the smoosh method to trim her nails and I cut one too close. I felt bad for her. I usually never use any soap when washing my hands before handling her. I just rinse them for a long time in hot water so they are scent free and comfortably warm for her. Good luck with your hedgehog.
