  • Abandoned railroad street tracks right in the middle of the roadway! Huge abandoned railroad trestle and abandoned railroad cars that have been restored and left right on the old railroad mainline. Belpre Industrial Parkersburg Railroad ( BIP ) is also here in Marietta, Ohio. I filmed street running trains on the BIP on Harmar Street here in Marietta and then I noticed the old trolley tracks on the other side of town. I came back to film those on July 14, 2021 and also filmed the trestle and railroad cars that are on display. The old trolley tracks are still in place for over 4 blocks right in the middle of the city. That is the longest stretch of abandoned trolley tracks that I have ever seen. The tracks run down the brick streets in Marietta. There are about 7 miles of brick streets in Marietta and there are more brick street mileage in Marietta than any other city in Ohio. I also noticed at least 2 track switches are still in place in the streets although the tracks end in a short stub. The trolley tracks are on the east side of the city and the actual railroad tracks are on the west side separated by the Muskingum River. It is also very interesting that the west side of the city has a long section of street running railroad track right down the middle of Harmar Street that are still in use by the BIP Railroad. See my videos of the street running trains here in Marietta. • Train Coming Down Midd... Marietta also has the last steam powered stern wheeled tow boat in the country. The W P Snyder Jr was built in 1918 . I was lucky to catch a big boat going under the trestle but that was not the Snyder Jr. This video was filmed on July 14, 2021, Thanks for watching! Not only the trolley tracks are cool, but those old "antique" brick roads. It's amazing how those bricks stay level after decades of freezing and thawing. That was a work of craftsmanship I don't think could be duplicated today.

@@shamrockgirl6595 Thanks for the info. In the city I live in Wisconsin, we still have a few blocks of brick streets that are still in relatively good shape. Unfortunately once they are dug up, they are not replaced. So I'm guessing the remaining brick streets are original streets. The bricks we have here are very heavy, you swear they are made of lead. Thanks again for the link.

At the end, the caboose color almost matched your shirt exactly. Is kitty ok? You usually film her and dogs together. When your outside she is usually right at your feet.

You sounded like the railroad archeologist who hangs out in South Florida and is always searching out abandoned tracks and switches......When I was growing up in the Bronx in the 1950s, not only were there lots of recently abandoned trolley tracks (NYC had just switched to buses), but several streets still had their original cobblestones that were rounded rather than flat-topped like bricks. That was a REALLY bumpy ride over those stones. Whenever the street had to be opened up to find a water main, gas line or electrical wires, the workers had to be very careful when they removed the cobblestones. Like pieces in a jigsaw puzzle, each stone had to be replaced in the same position it had been in before the street work started......That paddle wheel boat was very cool.....Great video.

Milwaukee used many granite pavers in their streets. Quite a few still buried under the asphalt to this day. Two years ago when digging for the base of our new light rail they unearthed several blocks of old streetcar tracks in granite pavers last used circa 1953

Ohio has some really neat old towns! My guess is that street running track, was once part of an Interurban line, and not just a street car track?
We once had an Interurban line that ran through the town of Plymouth, Michigan here, and connected it with many other nearby towns, and eventually ran into Detroit! It paralleled the Pere Marquette tracks between Northville, and Wayne, Michigan.
Some of the abandoned tracks were still buried in the dirt North of town, when my parents & I moved here in 1958!

Hey, glad you took my suggestion and went to Marietta Williamstown Saint Mary's and Parkersburg. Vidoes are awesome. The rail and brick for the trolley is still under the roads, they just paved over it all. They did start out horse drawn and quickly went electric. There are pics out there on historic Marietta FB groups. You can ride the Paddle Wheel boat. It docks under the Washington St bridge. Also for future trips Harmar is pronounced "Har Mer" , named after Fort Harmar that General George Washington created in 1785. Marietta is the oldest settlement in Ohio. 1788. Lots of street running in the area. Check out Friendly Wv too sometimes. And the Parkersburg wv trestle on the Oh side in Belpre is cool.

nice look at the old streetcar line, that single point turnout is a rare catch. Notice how most of the track is regular rail while the switch is single point and some guard rail track. Thanks for the tour JT 😁

@@JawTooth The Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad was an early rail line that ran through Southeastern Ohio. The Eastern portion of the line connected Athens to Marietta. Though it passed through communities in Washington County like Vincent and Cutler, the route through the hills necessitated many tunnels, trestles and culverts and were expensive to maintain. The portion of the M&C line west of Athens also featured tunnels, but was generally straighter and easier to maintain. In 1874, after the Baltimore and Ohio gained control of the M&C, the company abandoned the old line from Marietta to Athens in favor of a shorter line from Belpre to Athens. The M&C line west of Athens remained in use until the 1980s. Today many impressive stone tunnels and culverts remain along the original M&C line.

Looks like a fairly active downtown and without a doubt one of the longer sections of brick streets still extant much less with that much rail still visible. That bridge looks in very good condition and perhaps there were plans to operate the older cars over that portion. Ive seen a photo of the Warsaw (IN) RR waiting for the traffic light in Courthouse Square with their Plymouth loco and several freight cars. This was a remnant of the interurban and lasted 10 years or so after the passenger service ended. When surrounded by old autos and frt cars its super neat. Today you were like Johnny cash in I Walk the Line

@@shamrockgirl6595 thanks much for the info. Delavan WI has 2 blocks in very good condition downtown. Here in Milwaukee alleys had bricks into the early 1920s when new construction turned to concrete and likewise on main streets. Due to their proximity the streets here were paved in cut granite blocks hewn at numerous state quarries. Many in fact were used in Chicago due to their durability. A lot of streets here still have them buried under a coat of asphalt. I missed a great photo 20 years ago when they shaved the old asphalt off an old dual streetcar crossover firmly planted in granite pieces. These streets are a bit bumpier than bricks but last longer. For real history in 1985 a main roadway was excavated and old half hewn logs were found from circa 1850 on what was known as Watertown Plank Road. Oh yes the average curb was a long slab of limestone some still out there. Quarries were in Monticello. Lohrville and Red Granite..Thanks again!
