However, I have come to believe that most often we really don't know what is positive and confuse it with escapism and dissociative states of magical thinking. Now one may need a certain dose of that too, so I am not condemning anyone, but I think we all would do well with a true balance, which you are suggesting, because at the other end of the spectrum is the attitude of "facing the ugly truths of life" and making a virtue of bathing in darkness. That is just as unwholesome as the former.

My experience of life so far in this respect - the game of minds and the game of bodies are different things and I liken it to Eric Weinstein's example of sharp minds vs. sharp elbows where the first works on humanist and spiritual principles (some call that the 'infinite game', the later on Darwinian game theory (the 'finite game'). The priorities between these two are often mutually exclusive and quite often you're forced to play the game of bodies because its the game you can't exit if you have one - ie anyone can dominate anyone unless the person in question has either their own force or borrowed force to stop them. If you're in an unstable environment, particularly filled with people who've mostly aged into adulthood rather than being adults on the moral or spiritual level, materialism becomes something more difficult to shake off, not for lack of depth or vanity but the lack of financial self-sufficiency drags your life under the control of people who probably won't share your values.
I bring this up because of the mentions of things like rigidness, legalism, ego-driven spirituality, anything that gives you the ability to call other people inferior - especially when the later is taken up so enthusiastically as to seem like it was the entire goal of spiritual pursuit to begin with - that's game of bodies, Darwinian, and the game of bodies (you could also call it the 'game of status') will penetrate any social system it can because it will see any landscape or set of hierarchical structures as a social climbing and genetic self-enrichment apparatus. It's similar to how Christianity forced the issue of forgiveness, not simply because non-forgiveness might be read as a sign of small-mindedness but because not forgiving, perpetual victimhood, conspiring to take all of that person's possessions - way more lucrative and gratifying in the zero-sum sense vs. forgiving which means you don't get to smash them and take their stuff.

The best place to start to answer this question is to define the perceptual context. Who is asking the question. Let me explain. Our experience is defined by senses and the associated interpolations made by the brain to navigate a 3d space we call consensus reality. But this consensus is just the working context of a higher self that is present in superposition within (and outside) the human form. See accounts of NDE and OOB experiences. If you go along with this idea, it soon puts into question the contextual box we imagine we are within. If you visualize for a minute or two, that the self identity or "Persona identity" as I call it is just a proxy for something higher you might ask, well what is the nature of that unnamed being and by the way, where does it reside? Re-asking the question from this vantage point is the start of the answer. Meditation is the channel to start to unpack the larger reality of which "this context" is just a subset in the way the persona is a subset of a higher self.

I gently disagree. Meditation and prayer bring a person to the source confluence of many internal states. The heart is one of many pathways which are opened during introspective practices. Energy is necessary to neutralize negative transients in the heart. It is necessary to cultivate panic energy to get rid of them. It can't be done with the mind,, from that perspective I agree with you.
Meditation isn't for anything, if one expect something from meditation, then they're doing it wrong.
