+Brandon Harmon I regret not taking more pictures before covering up the fowler flap linkages inside the wing. However, I still need to finish up the fowlers on the outboard wing panel where the linkages will be exposed, so I will likely be posting pictures and more details of that sometime soon in my build thread on the FT Forums here: forum.flitetest.com/showthread.php?23097-Scale-Build-Off-Scratchbuilt-96-quot-P-38-Lightning
+Andres Lu Both of those planes are beautiful, can't wait to see what you do with the paint on the 38 seeing what you've done on the 109. Definitely will be keeping an eye on that thread.
I've been in the hobby since 1975, and that ME-109 and P-38 are two of the coolest airplanes I've seen in a while. The fowler flaps on the P-38 are outstanding. Excellent work young man!
the reason that the whole hobby has grown into such a beautiful community is that fact that YOU are around. FliteTest has changed the face of the hobby, making it super family friendly. plus, I SAW THAT WDP MINI RACE TRACK!, YOU AINT FOOLING ANYONE!!! can't wait to see that :D
Josh Bixler, I am around your age, and you used the perfect word - Nitchy - I was not of economic means to do this hobby, and now being in my 30s... Your channel has opened my world to that childhood want that I never got to fill as a kid. So thank you Flitetest. Now if only I could figure out the flying aspect. I am worried that FAA will beat down my door... lol okay over exaggeration, but I need to really get on that.
The technical and enginerring proficiency of some of these young people is inspiring even to older guys like me, well done Flight test for your encouragement in this great hobby. Jez UK.
WOW I LOVE THIS!!! If only my dad were alive to see this coming to life!!!! WOW THANK YOU ALL FOR MAKING ME REMEMBER THE GOOD TIMES WAY BACK WHEN!!!! My dad's favorite is hanging in the Aeronautical Museum here in OKC. His version of the WWI Tri-Winged Fulkner!!!
Great episode! It was enjoyable seeing the younger generation design and create flying works of art from scratch. The slow flying warbirds were fabulous!
I'm 74 and and have not done much modeling but still do. i wish they would have had all this great stuff when I was a kid. I had one of the first single channel radio control units that had tubes in it. :)
4:26 you guys at FliteTest are a big part of that. I could have afforded RC decades ago with the exception of crashing, that I could not afford. But now because of you, and cheap foam board builds.... I can lawn dart RC planes with abandon! The wife picked me up 5 sheets of foam board the other day and I have two complete planes worth of bits for $5. Since most of the control and propulsion parts tend to survive a crash, I can wreck these till the end of time and never go broke. Thank you for finding a way to build that is CHEAP!
I love your comments and you’re right about the hobby being accessible now. I was one of those kids growing up that could never afford the hobby I loved.
+Vega Rapidus Thank you brother. This is our heart. We truly want to see Flitetest go from a community to a family, to a movement. It humbles us to see the talent and the passion in our youth. We can't wait to add to the talent that is in front of the camera here at HQ. JB
Came across this by accident. Glad I did. You aren't kidding that RC is an expensive hobby. I don't even want to add up my receipts over the years. It's nice to see an entry level, family oriented planform. Keep up the good work and I'll keep watching from now on.
Really liked that P 38, or forked tailed devil to the AXIS forces, possibly my favorite Pursuit aircraft of it's era. Peter is an RC genius, you got lucky finding him, loved that tilt rotor.
hey to all the flight test crew i really want to thank you guys for the videos you do because they are amazing and you guys have inspired me to get into the hobby and im currently in the middle of scratch building my own trainer type plane and buying all the kit. I just want to say keep doing what you guys are doing because its awesome!
once again, Awesome video. It was through flitetest that I began my rc hobby. We dont really have anything as big and popular in the UK like it is for you stateside.I would love to get over to see you guys, big fan of Josh and Pete, maybe one day. ...........many thanks, keep 'em coming.
Hey Josh, Nice work inspiring these kids. They often turn out to be the future of aerospace! Back when my kids were in elementary school I was doing a lot with astronomy and telescope making. I did a talk for the kids at one of the local elementary schools. At that time one of these kids moms was able to have Astronaut Peggy Whitson come in to do a short talk also. Well, one of those 5th graders went on to be one of my (many) superstar Science Olympiad team members. After graduating, he went on to get his degree in aeronautical engineering at Stanford and now works at SpaceX! He was part of the development team that built the Dragon reusable space delivery system for delivering things to the ISS. (By the way, it successfully docked with the ISS this week!) These kids are amazing and inspiration is crucial. Thanks for what you do!
Well done young sirs and ladys! The one young guy is amazing! At that age I knew how to put air in my bike tire... Josh, well said. Peter keep up the good work.
+Denys Sene I still need to install the fowler flaps on the outboard wing sections and will likely post pictures of that in my build thread here: forum.flitetest.com/showthread.php?23097-Scale-Build-Off-Scratchbuilt-96-quot-P-38-Lightning
A great P-38. I have wanted to build one for some time but don't know where to get plans. I scratch build with balsa, but I've not tried foam as a building medium. Great video guys.
Teaser twin--I'm in the process of building a similar plane. Started by programing my spectrum for differential steering ,Lot of research on utube. Next hurtle attaching center pod, then P38 style tail but real problem came in when running all the wiring to center pod ,2 sets power and 2 control leads in front of the spar then 2 servo leads behind spar( arrow shaft). Looking forward to how you accomplished this and how you managed to balance and attach strong landing gear to model.
My first exposure to the hobby as a child was my dad flying the old FM radio version planes when electric planes were unheard of. At the flying field, you always had some way to signify which frequency you were on, and a usually 2 color ribbon not he long antenna coming out of your radio. Three planes in the air was a lot and considered dangerous. Now, 100 planes flying at a time at a popolar airfield or event is not unusual with very seldom a midair collision. Oh how the hobby has changed.
The Asian guy with the P38 and German plane, the planes didn't fly slowly, that was more like a scale speed. They are long builds but it would be great to see how he dose it.
+Green Silver The 109 flies around 5mph, that's pretty slow if you ask me, lol. :D (imagine a full scale BF109 flying at 30-40 mph....). The P-38 doesn't fly much faster, maybe around 7mph.
Hi flitetest crew! Another brilliant video. I absolutely love your channel! I love the way you are so inspiring and informative and get everyone involved in this excellent hobby. I love all your experimental ideas , as this is what I love doing also. I've recently finished designing and building an rc flying Back to the Future Delorean, which will hopefully have its maiden flight very soon , I will post it on my channel as soon as I have flown it along with a build video, hope you guys will like it, that's me in my profile photo holding it . Keep up the good work folks 😊
One of the Best videos you guys have had . Of course you always make great video's but to see young people and many families enjoying this hobby together, is excellent Need more events like this around the country and need to have such things in schools and after school....... Kids need something to be involved in other than social media/internet
I see those brown waterproof seaplanes in the background. As a pilot with a nice large pond nearby, I cannot wait until those designs become available. I'm guessing the twin-engine plane from Tale Spin and Porco Rosso's Macchi M.33 fighter??
im 15 years old and have nearly finished my first RC plane, i think i messed Up because its bigger than me! im building the ft 3d and i only need to put the battery and the motor, its really cool also as a project which I am building with my best Friend, personally i think RC really unites people, and im glad It exists
Have to say, watching your channel HAS inspired me to look into building a quadrotor drone. I love the idea of them and would love to give it a go. Need to stop one of my million other hobbies first though XD
I have a challenge for you guys at FT! so i challenge you to make a QAV style race quad out of foam board. The only requirements I have thought of are as follows: on sheet of foam board, one wood rod of any choice biggest size allowed is 1/4 inch, and it must carry a gopro and/ or fpv gear. Have 3 people design and build their own and fly it. "Winner" is determined by how ever you want them to be. And Let The Games Begin!!!
I know Radio Control has its limits but the possibilities on a event of this kind, seem endless to me! I love this hobby. Believe me, that´s a understatement! ;-)
Hey FliteTest! I'm a huge fan of your channel. I'm also a huge fan of Burt Rutan, who is known for his radical departures in the aviation design world. Seeing as you guys like exploring new stuff and coming up with challenges, I'd like to put up a request: build Burt Rutan's Boomerang and White Knight II (if you want you can put Space Ship II as a detachable glider/rocket lol). Now for me to fix my Champ... :P
The Me 109 and P38 builds were awesome. The slow flights in a cramped space were amazing to see.
It's a BF 109
It warms my heart so much to see young people doing something that isn't on a phone and they are very clever at it.
The flaps on the P38 are great. Would love to see these in more detail!
+Brandon Harmon Yes! Me too!

+Andres Lu Awesome
+Andres Lu Please, start posting some stuff on youtube!
+Andres Lu Both of those planes are beautiful, can't wait to see what you do with the paint on the 38 seeing what you've done on the 109. Definitely will be keeping an eye on that thread.
Best episode in a while. Its nice to see some of the community and what they're doing.

Events like this are great not only for educating people but to promote safety in the hobby as well. Excellent job @FliteTest
Some amazing stuff there, the Messerschmidt is an awesome slow flyer, and the Fowler flaps on the P38 are incredible!
Josh Bixler,

That has that built the P- 38 some serious skills. Awesome work.
Such an epic P38 build! Please follow this young man on the build! Absolutely stunning execution and flight.
That P-38 is fantastically inspired. I would love to build something even half as detailed.
The technical and enginerring proficiency of some of these young people is inspiring even to older guys like me, well done Flight test for your encouragement in this great hobby. Jez UK.

That P-38 was not just awesome but BEAUTIFUL as well! My #1 all-time favorite prop-powered warbird.

There is something hugely satisfying about seeing whole families like that.
I love your comments and you’re right about the hobby being accessible now. I was one of those kids growing up that could never afford the hobby I loved.
What a build, both of them, can't believe how slow it goes. Also .....that indoor scaled down Dubai track at 5:22!
That P-38 is so AWESOME!!!! I gotta have one!
The P38 and BF 109 were awesome how about a feature on his construction technique!
Loved the scale or sub-scale flightspeed of those foamboard models, especially the Focke Wulf!
I think this will be probably one of the most important and intense episode of Flitest story... IMHO... love it ! Cheers from Switzerland

You need to hire that kid Josh

+Andres Lu nice! Great work!
+Andres Lu Where do you get the space to build those? I'd really like to build something like that, but a Bf 110. :)
Someone sign that kid up! Very impressive!
The big warbird flyes so gracefully slow. Its a sight to see.
Stumbled on this site. How cool! I look forward to participating one day with my son and daughter!
Such a positive community with lots of family bonding!
Incredible creativity, beautiful sight!
Josh: You do such a great job hosting Flite Test.
This was such a wholesome episode.
A great P-38. I have wanted to build one for some time but don't know where to get plans. I scratch build with balsa, but I've not tried foam as a building medium. Great video guys.
After David, and then Peter, and then those kids. Amazing.
Who could not like this video? Great inspiration here FT! You are changing lives and providing great activities for young people out there!
Great planes, the P38 was a really clever build.
wow these people have many talent to design awesome planes
Great effort on the P-38, would love to see a follow on blurb with it dressed up in paint!
Was awesome to see you guys at NEF again, always an great group to hang out with! :D
I'm even on camera for a short moment at 1:22. :)

Absolutely fantastic work! That is so impressive.
The P38 and Folkwolf look amazing. Does he have a youtube channel? Would like to see a full show just on him and his planes.
Bf 109 you mean...
At least one of these young guys, has GOT to be on the first Mars mission. Well done, men!

I knew I should have gone to NEF this year.... I was lazy and stayed home. I'm regretting it now! That p38 is amazing!
+Gondras123 Don't worry, I'll bring it next year when it is all finished and painted. :D
+Andres Lu Awesome, can't wait to see it!
Bravo! You guys are doing great work for the hobby! Glad to see that BUILDING hasn't been killed off by the foamie ARF/BNF/RTF revolution...
I see those brown waterproof seaplanes in the background. As a pilot with a nice large pond nearby, I cannot wait until those designs become available. I'm guessing the twin-engine plane from Tale Spin and Porco Rosso's Macchi M.33 fighter??
The lightning and 109 are really nice. I would have thought they were bought kits.
Lovely commentary there. Very well said.
very nice guys - big, slow foamies! Awesome!

GREAT VIDEO !!! Thanks for posting ! Regards from Alaska!
You guys should hire the p-38 builder on. He and Peter would make an incredible team:-)
wow great building on the p38
Wow super cool. And light. Flite test should make a foam board/ balsa/plywood gasser p-38

Incredible P-38.
Awesome work flight test!
Great stuff! Keep it up guys. Love watching these.
the flight is sooo beautiful
Andres has grown alot
Just lovely to watch
Will you do a build video of a P38 lightning? I'm curious if you use counter rotating props? If so how do you accomplish that?
well done boys that is awesome to watch fly
when is that waterproof foam board amphib that was on that wall behind you going to get a episode it looks amazing
