- The genre of Goth is highly misunderstood. Does this ranking of the 200 greatest goth albums get it right, or drastically wrong?
I do a reaction to the ranking, in a 2-parter. This week it's the countdown from 200-100. Next week will be 99-1 (obviously).
Get your eyeliner on, but bring refreshments as this is a hefty one. See you on the other side.

I wanna see your gothy little homes, caves or hovels...
Send some good quality pics (and descriptions of the pics if you like) of the goth, witchy or spooky aspects of your abode to: gothveggieboy@gmail.com
They could be featured in a future episode!

Dan, you often introduce new / old music to me that I really enjoy. From this bottom 100-200, I didn't know many of the bands/albums, but as you were reading them off I'd often pause and check them out online. Thanks so much for your time doing this commentary. Very helpful! Looking forward to the top 100 list review!
No worries, and thank you for the comment! Dreading the countdown from 99 (haven’t looked yet!!) 🕯️💀
Hey Dan, great work as usual and fun to hear your commentary. I think it's an interesting expansive list, albeit of course very subjective, and without a doubt published to exploit the success of Songs of a Lost World... One thing that bothers me is I'm a huge fan of Eyeless in Gaza, probably one of the most misunderstood bands ever, and would never think of including them in a Goth list. And with two albums! Have they even listened to them? Especially Drumming the Beating Heart, which is one of my favourite albums in the world and it is lyrical, melancholy, romantic and beautiful but it contains zero of the darkness or edge of Goth, or even of what most people think as post-punk, for the matter. I'm flabbergasted...
I hope The Merry Thoughts will be somewhere on this list. And The Garden Of Delight. Phantasmagoria should have been put waaaaayyyyy higher. Have a great w-e and thanks, Dan for this great post.
@@inqb8music146 Thank you! Very welcome indeed 🕯️💀
Just love to listen to someone else's opinions. Your reaction to some entries is priceless, but that is why I subscribe.
Looking forward to next week.
Thank you for the kind comment! 🕯️💀
maybe not the king of goth, but surely youre the high priest, nay the pope of goth
I’m taking Pope and am gonna rock that! Thank you!
Like a lot of these sorta lists, it's kinda all over the place as was expected. Still, quite interesting to see what artists and albums were chosen and there were quite a few I'd never even heard of, so that was really cool as I love discovering new music. For me though personally, there may had been a little too many experimental types of albums/artists that kinda sit on the edge of the genre, but again, that's just my opinion and what do I know, lol.
I'm crying right now at the positioning of some of the more classic Goth albums like The Damned, Fields of the Nephilim, Bauhaus, Corpus Delicti, and London After Midnight(yes, I wish they had more albums also).
Anyways, great list and video as always, second to none on the Goth front of U Tube.
Ahh, thank you for the kind comment! 🕯️💀
Thanks for doing this - I cannot find the mag anywhere and considering buying it online - but your brilliant video has saved me the money. Loads of stuff I love in there and look forward to part 2.
Loved to see Into a Circle in there - criminally unappreciated band
Never heard of them but I’m listening to them now and I’m enjoying, thanks 😃
Always intresting to listen to lists. But agree about some wasn't even Goth.
Haha... had to check if my mug is still on the shelfes... Look like we have same type of coffee mug.
Have a great weekend Dan 🦇🖤🖤🖤🖤🦇
Thank you my lovely! Have a great weekend too! 🖤🕯️🖤
Wow, an epic undertaking, loving also the humour you bring to it. Lots of bands I have never head of here, a feast of stuff to investigate, thanks yet again.
Some initial thoughts- Mask/Sylphes/Elysium/Sky's gone out/Medusa/Phantasmagoria/Eye for the Main Chance/Psycho-magnet-all grievously underrated here- also Dali's Car higher than Mask??? What are they thinking????
All the Diamanda Galas albums listed should be much higher.
Completely agree re. EBM/Nick Cave/New Order-/Soft Cell-/Bunnymen- they do not belong on a Goth list IMO. Also Eyeless in Gaza -not really. Good to see albums by Cranes and Cindytalk's Camouflage Heart.....again, deserve a much higher position.
Looking forward to part two and another chance to get pleasantly scandalized
Thank you… but kinda dreading looking at the rest of the list…. 🤣
Nice to see so much love for Medusa in the comments. CoX’s early 4AD albums are true classics and masterpieces.
I’m seeing a horses performance live in Brighton at resident record in March and they are going to sign their new album as well which is apparently supposed to be quite dark. The strange house album was basically covers of previously unreleased Motown songs in a Gothic style. It’s a real gem.
Loved the commentary.
Loved the gothkeeping.
I recently found your channel and i love it probably one of my favorite goth channels hope you get more recognition
Thank you, that’s lovely of you to say! 🖤🦇🕯️
Enjoyed this . Some of these are borderline but thats me. Some great classic bands also.
Criminally low were Medusa by COX, Elizium by FOTN, Phantasmagoria by The Damned, the Bauhaus ones, Dreamtime by The Cult. Especially considering how many were obscure or not even goth by any means! I would rather see YOUR top 200 sir. From a true expert. Are you up to the challenge? 😊
I might just do it. It would be freakin difficult, but worth it! 🕯️💀
Medusa deserves to be alot higher, just based on Back Door alone
Lol by the way High Priest those "dark wave tulips' are actually crocus.😂💀
+1 on Cranes, Miranda Sex Garden and Of a Mesh, who I had the great fortune of seeing in a dingy NYC club in the late 80s (yes, I am an old lady) Off to revisit Skin, Cindytalk and Jarboe now. (Will Swans make the top 100?)
Dan...did you know the majority of these albums? and the ones you never heard of did you do research to find them and listen to them? I am amazed by all these groups I've never heard of! I am looking forward to the next group! You look amazing as always!
No, didn’t know all of them - quite a few at the bottom end of the list I had to research! 🙂🕯️
Yes some of these i havent heard so its a good list to check out the more goth ones.
Agree Soft Cell aren't goth but I think that Baby Doll and Heat are as close to goth as 80s synth pop ever got. More so than Depeche mode anyway.
I thought it was a bit odd that you really took exception to Flesh For lulu, my understanding is they were seen as part of the scene at the time, even if they were on the fringes.
Dali's Car above two Bauhaus albums though - what's that about?
Nice to see Rubella Ballet (yes, on the goth/punk border for sure) and the James Rays Gangwar album on there though.
Anyway good work , saved me buying the mag, looking forward to the next part, I'm expecting plenty to get annoyed about the closer it gets to the top of the chart!
When I thought that your channel couldn't get any better, you've come along and decided to talk about this magazine that I've been very curious about, but have no way of obtaining. Thanks a lot!
Thanks to you, I saved two digits. The list so far is disappointing. I mean, Elysion, Therion, and Mortemia? That's metal... Lol I like Diamanda Galas, but not for a goth list, just like with Front 242, Marilyn Manson, Dead or Alive, Xeno & Oaklander, and Depeche Mode. Also, the amount of obscure titles frustrates me because I am unsure about their intention. Are those titles really important to goth, or, are they including them to sound smart? I agree that Rosetta Stone's, Corpus Delicti's, Bauhaus's, Fields of the Nephilim's, 45 Grave's, The Damned's, and Black Tape For a Blue Girl's should have been higher on this list. So far, I'd be generous if I give this list 3/10; it's rubbish. And, the it shouldn't feature more than one album per band.
How wonderful that I'm not the only one who hears a lack of goth in Nick Cave's music. Obviously, I am talking about his solo career, not The Birthday Party. People seem to disagree with me, for some odd reason. Also, Mesh and Lace is my favourite by Modern English, so at least that one is there.
Also, I think that Merciful Nuns are releasing a new LP, so I encourage you to look into it. And, I'm curious about your thoughts on Lady Gaga's forthcoming album as she has sampled "Spellbound" on "Abracadabra", and there is an article in which she talks about how learning about industrial has influenced the album...
We'll see you on the next one, in the second part! I look forward to seeing you blow them to smithereens again. 🦇🕯️🦇🕯️🦇🕯️
Thanks Adem, your comments ALWAYS make me smile 🙂 Will check out the new Merciful Nuns annnnnnd… Lady Gaga. Is that why she’s been photographed recently wearing a black dress? I mean, she totally looks amazing! Going to investigate now… 🕯️💀
@@ByCandlelight666 Your videos and comments make me smile all the time, too. 😇🦇😇
Oh, quite possibly. Whatever is going on with her these days... She wants a slice of goth AND industrial. Lol
I would love to see your list of the albums you would have included in place of the ones you would eject.
I might have to do it at some point. A massive undertaking though! 🕯️💀
Factoid; Wasted Youth's current bass player used to be in Miranda Sex Garden!
Rankings are strange. I like them, but mainly I love to hate them.----------- Dear Dan, this is another great video.
#1 Looks Like Death by The Black Capes, IMO (Popular Delusions by Verona On Venus, and Angels of Liberty seem cool too)
I love love love you & ya Chanel o so much my guy!!! & if Disintegration or Unknown Pleasures/ Bloody kissess isn’t on here… I’m done hehehe 🦇🖤❤️🖤❤️🖤🦇🦇🦇
Ahh thank you!!! 🖤🦇 An amazingly lovely comment! 🕯️💀
@ U o so welcome & keep on doing watcha doing my guy 🦇🖤❤️🖤🦇
Can't believe you've heard all those albums even before you saw the list
2:32: (Dan when it's time to look at the long list): dOn't mAKe mE dO It. nOo! dO'Nt plEASse! AnYtHIng!
Already crying 😭
@ByCandlelight666 Sorry:( Still my favourite goth RUclipsr
Criminal top 200. Clan Of Xymox - 182 Corpus Delicti - 177 London After Midnight - 165 The Damned - 161 45 Graves - 153 Clan Of Xymox - 149 Bauhaus - 125 The Cure - 124 The Danse Society - 104 are underrated AF
These are all classics. ??
"So, it's not just a phase?" - your mom.
Totally agree on Nick Cave. I love and listen to a lot of his work, but not in my goth playlist.
Can't believe Elyzium is that low ..... This totally disqualifies the whole list for me ... Elyzium is one of the greates goth masterpieces, it should be in the top ten ... at least ...
Agreed! 🕯️💀
Okay, this is going to take a while... Because I'm going to check out *EVERY* F'n one of these groups! 😳☠☠ So, I gotta do it in segments, it's already after 1 A.M. already... REALLY digg'n Fra Lippo Lippi right now and grabbing a bunch of their albums!
I'LL BE BACK! 💀
Cool! Avoid Mumford & Sons if you can though..
Any list like this is going to be controversial and you can argue the positions ad nauseum, so I will. Medusa is criminally low as is Mask. I could go on but others have already made the case better than I. I was however surprised at how good it actually was but, lets face it, the bar is awfully low. I think the final 100 will hold more disappointment.
I saw Diamanda Galas at the Sydney Opera house. Two hours of her absolutely torturing a concert grand piano and it was amazing.
Placing Phantasmagoria so low in the list was also a crime. I even named my dog Grimly Fiendish.
You naming your dog Grimly Fiendish wins everything today! Love it!
I feel validated by your opinions on Depeche mode, front 242, Danielle dax, all Bauhaus side projects, and esp nick cave
I would argue filigree and shadow instead of blood, and if they're going to list front 242 - absolutely no reason to be there - where are Skinny Puppy albums? That Manson album is glam.
Not sure if Skinny Puppy are in the next batch? Seriously haven’t yet looked at the rest of the list 😬
New Order aren´t goth, but surely the Movement album is goth-y enough judging by sound and mood? Especially on a non-puritan list like this.
But I do agree on what you said about Elyzium. Would not be out of place in the top 10. Same could be said for Medusa.
Looking forward to part 2!
Thank you! Yes, Movement is deffo dark, and is always gonna sound more Joy Division than their other albums - but to me, even Joy Division doesn’t totally fit the list (amazing as they are). It’s so difficult when the list is called ‘goth’, rather than, say, ‘deathrock’ - which would make things more ‘clean cut’. Thanks for the comment! 🕯️💀
Pyromania still has a shot at the top 100! 🤣
As someone who loves their Industrial equally as much as their Goth, no, no and NOOOOOOO!!! To the inclusion of Front 242 & Depeche Mode on this list😣 And fair points well made on The Neff’ being far to low on this list & just because you have ex-Bauhaus members in your band does not make your inclusion here mandatory 🙄
Thank you, yep, definitely some new to me albums to check out and if I hadn’t already, the inclusion of the line “coming at you like an angry tench” would of had me smashing that like button immediately 😡🐟😡. 🤣🤣🤣
Haha! Thanks for the comment! 🐟 Hope you find some new stuff from the list 🕯️💀
Have to agree.. I love Mick Karn (Dalis Car), but Peter Murphy's voice doesn't make it a goth album, also have to agree with Nick Cave, New Order, Front 242, and some of the other albums. They're great, I love Front 242 and Nick Cave, but I never considered them goth - back in the 90s they were somewhat an entry drug before I got into goth. They should have named the list "The Best of Goth, Dark Wave, Post Punk, EBM and more" haha :)
These lists are pure jive.
Dan, l don't want to put any spoilers out there and ruin part 2, which you really need to post now. I flicked through the mag before l stumped out the £9.99 for it. There were so many albums by the same band or artist l had to gasp. That and the fact most of the top albums were not even remotely goth sickened me. The top 200 Goth albums as voted for by Uncut! Well Uncut, you don't have much of a clue, the top ten Goth albums! l'm surprised Johnny Cash wasn't in there, he wears black! I ended up putting the magazine back as it wasn't a Goth top 200, not even close. I'm an old punk who saw nearly every band on the list and quite a few more than once. All great bands, all great albums but not Goth.
That Corpus Delicti album definitely belongs much higher. I also love Mask by Bauhaus. New Order didn’t belong and are just there because of its history with Joy Division. I’m hoping they’ll be a Lacrimosa album in there but not feeling very optimistic. Also the Nephilim don’t belong this low down at all. I suspect this list would be better if it was 100.
If you think the list from 200 -100 is bad wait until you see the 99-1!😮
I almost don’t wanna look at the rest of the list. Don’t make me do it…
@@ByCandlelight666 you brought this on yourself. I await the second half. Also as I tend to agree with your views on the artists I know so this is helpful for finding new bands to listen to.
I would put The Dancing Did only album, english postpunk gothic folk in the top 20 and they are not a typical goth band but great dickensian lyrics.
I'm sorry but I completely disagree with what you said about Memento Mori. For the rest, I tend to be in agreement.
No worries at all - totally happy to be disagreed with, this is a safe space 👍 Just out of interest, was it because I said Momento wasn’t goth, or that I didn’t like it? I know a lot of people like the album, which is fairplay. Only asking, because this list has some absolute bangers… but then also features albums that you could classify as ‘other albums that goths like’. Just interested to hear your thoughts, especially for when I wrap the list up next week. Cheers for the comment! 🕯️💀
It is a very 'consistent' Goth list since they did not include the Beatles and Frank Sinatra...
Haha, yes - good point 🤣
I always loathe a best of anything listing from so called music critics who somehow become the authorities of what's worthy to be put on their list, as they are given consent and full backing by a well financed mainstream publication.
Well said - would be interesting to find out what process they went through. Do you think they sat back in their chair and said to themselves ‘now THAT is the definitive goth list..’ 🤣
A very hit and miss list I wonder who came up with this list
It’s so weird isn’t it? Some I can understand being on the list (but am not a fan of), but there’s others that clearly don’t belong 🤷♂️
@ByCandlelight666 Someone's having fun reacting to the list
Haha! Totally…despite my serious face! 🤣😈
@ByCandlelight666 How does it make you feel that you yet have a Part 2 to do?
