I always wondered why no smartphone maker ever made interchangeable lens smartphone. 1" sensor is good enough but let down by plastic lenses. Glass optics are must to produce high contrast, sharpness and colour accuracy.
@@HafifSyukrait's easy if they wanted too. They can have removable back panel that you can swap for a special metal case that house the phone with proper lens mount But then it won't be water proof. Or it could be if they follow the hmd one screw implantation it could be water resistant and you can add the case mount in under 2min
Thanx! I like this phone because it's cheap ($100 in used condition now), has a big 20mp Bayer sensor and a centered easy-to-drill camera bump so it's perfect for such experiment.
I'm glad it's useful! When you start modding the phone please share your progress in our Discord so others with the same phone model could learn from your experience🤓
I still have a Lumia 1020 lying around. With a custom firmware and this mod, it would make a outstanding camera with very good image quality while beeing very compact. It even has a camera grip accessory, which would allows for even more modding.
You should totally try adding a sapphire crystal lens inside the hole, where you painted that edge black. Dust will most definitely get into the camera. A sapphire crystal lens would fix that and won't interfere with the mount. You can get custom sizes made on Ali and with various coatings. Maybe you could physically remove the puriple tint by adding a green tinted coating on the lens. Maybe even a polarized filter.
An interesting thing to do would be to make a low profile 3D printed cradle that puts the original lens back in, for when you want it to be just a phone. Manual focus with a little lever, would need some screw thread modelling.
Great video man i think that this is the way they are doing it for 28 Years Later. I sure hope you get a bazzilion views and convince a phone manufacturer to make a phone with a built in lens mount.
I'm halfway video so my comment might not be precise to the issues but: 1. i would suggest painting inside area before putting mount in place with glue and using something better to cover it than a sharpie 2. please cover the sensor while you wait for glue to set, it's not a good idea to have it open like that for longer time 3. I would look into something like gorilla glass ( they make really small cutouts for action cameras for example) to protect sensor, since it was never designed in way to be in open, like proper cameras have, i doubt manufacturers put special protective glass in front of it
Would you be willing to test the efficiency of vanta black as a material for the interior lens housing of cameras to reduce the internal reflections and effectively improve camera performance

I actually made a similar modification to my poco f2 pro with c-mount, alongside increasing the battery capacity with a power bank cell and adding a heatsink + fan inside. The second I installed my 75mm lens I knew it is not quite a setup for telephoto shots, as the lack of any stabilization kills the handheld shots. If I were to be bringing around a tripod anyways, there seemed to be no point to go after a modified phone. Sadly I'm still trying to settle my sorrow for a random failure on the motherboard that render the whole project useless :'(
Your mods are awesome! As for stabilization you can use surroundings instead of tripod - like placing a phone on a table or a boulder in the wilderness. There are also techniques on how to hold your phone more steady.
i was having this imagination if phone can change lens, since i own kzoom in 2015 :3 i even can take startrail picture in that time with kzoom :3 was best camera phone at that time :3
I did the same with a cheap shitty action camera, but with 12mm mount. As a result, i've still got a low resolution, but a fat, juicy, and colorful pixel. The lens was cheap and pretty versatile. The camera can be used as: 1. Macro, it is able to shoot even the dust on the lens surface 2. Wide angle 3. Portrait. 4. Tele photo. Now, I want to find out the thermal printer camera with adult design and strap on that lens to that camera. I think the result would be the top as an alternative to lomography cameras.
I like the idea of taking the cheap webcam, modding it and comparing the image quality to some high-end pricey webcam, added it into my To-Do list, thanx!
Yes, shoot in RAW with disabled vignette correction in MotionCam + apply a Flat-Field correction in post 👍 I will make a video showing the whole process.
This is very interesting but I have a request, please make a night vision camera for nothing phone 1 , you just have to remove its IR filter and take out its light strips and replace by ir light, please please 🙂🙂🙂
The best approach is to take the main sensor for C-Mount and keep additional camera modules as a backup for quick point-and-shoots. Although C-Mount can sometimes block the vision to additional sensors so it depends on the phone model.
It depends with what camera and lenses you compare. 1"-type 20mp Bayer sensor can give good low-light performance when paired together with fast lenses, probably better than any regular smartphone lenses. When I was recording a firewood scene by the lake - the picture on wide open aperture was brighter than in real life 😄
Well that is true get used phone not buy a new one to much money to damage it ... something that u will loose is autofocus from the lens u had shoot manually only and use vintage lenses or just buy samsung nx3000 with lens not so expensive maybe $200 or buy old sony nex ..this a good project for the one have a lot time in patient doing this
I would love to do this but I just don't have the ability! Is there a service I could send my phone off to to get this done? Would happily pay for this mod to be done!
I also was thinking at first that the IR filter was the cause of the purple tint. But I haven't removed the built-in one and tried to add an additional one but it didn't help. So the purple tint is the result of the Lens Correction algorithm configured for the removed built-in lens. And when you disable it, you still need to apply lens correction for the newly installed lens. You can read more about it in the 'software' channel on my Discord.
@@ModAndShoot Rather than IR, it could also be due to UV sensitivity. On m4/3 mount, some panasonic lenses are known for having similar purple tint on olympus bodies because panasonic has a stronger UV filter on the sensor, whereas olympus includes stronger uv filters in the lens. People have mitigated this issue by adding a ~400nm high pass filter to the back of the lens. You can find out more information if you look up lumix 7-14 f4 lens mods.
