  • Late season watermelon... the plant died so I needed to pull off my undersized watermelon a few weeks earlier than planned.
Overall, it tasted almost as sweet as store bought watermelons so I know this variety would be incredible if it was full sized and fully ripe.

CG watermelon gets up to 35 lbs. 10-15 and it's just starting. I get at least 10 to 22 watermelons every year from one vine

I got a 29 pounder this year. Usually I cannot grow watermelons to ripeness because we don't get the hot prolonged heat. I am in zone 10A. This year we got 95-100 degrees for about 2 weeks and that's when I got the melons!! Go figure. Die of the heat wave(no air conditioning in our house) but grow great watermelons!

Thanks. I'm growing Charleston Greys for the first time, and I was wondering when to harvest them.

That poor little pitiful melon, whomever told you they only get to 10 15.lbs, had no clue what they were talking about. I grew up here in SC, we grew Charleston grays, rattlesnake, and garrison, Charleston grays, will average mabe 35 40 lbs, you want the bottom of melons to start turning a little yellow as a sign of ripeness.

Thank you for this video. I have Charleston grey watermelons growing we are 2 weeks from first frost. Plants are still alive. I have 5 Charleston grey, 1 moon and stars and 3 Klondike blue ribbon watermelons between 6 plants total. One of the Charleston grey the tendril did turn brown so I pulled. Its 6lbs a bit smaller then the others.

Im trying to grow them this year. I'm curious to know why there's wire all around it? To keep animals away? And what is the purpose of the vertical wires? Are they necessary?

From my understanding they are not necessary. It can help with bugs but it also saves a lot of space overall. If you’re low on space it would be best to do so

If you're only getting 10 or 15 lb Charleston Grey's , you are doing something wrong . My melons are constantly 25 to 40 lbs .

Ricky Mathis I agree. It’s my soil. It’s only on it’s 3rd year and it was in its second year then. It takes time to build it up. I don’t like adding chemical fertilizers.
