I think the only mistake the photographer made was mocking people for enquiring about wedding photography with a $2K budget. $2K is still a significant amount to most people. It makes her sound elitist, snobby and out of touch.

Right!! She acting like they offered her $200 not $2000! Poor taste and unprofessional

I think the backlash is also due to her snubbing someone with a $2k budget for wedding photos. That was unprofessional in my opinion and not at all fair to the couple reaching out to inquire about booking her. If I had an $8k budget I would not book her based on her behavior in that video towards someone with a smaller budget.

I get that, BUT her website clearly states that wedding photography starts at 8500. Like imagine if you sell a service online for a clear price and people contact you asking for that service for a quarter of the starter price, would that not annoy you?

She can charge whatever she wants the reason why she has the smug attitude is because many clients are ignorant, and don’t know what they’re paying for therefore inflating her ego. I see it all the time and I call it out when they’re trash.

Or she did it to go viral on TikTok. The amount of people who gained success from negative back lash is pretty high. Bad press is still press. Especially in the digital age. Views are views. The fact that on the internet people will get pissed off watch a video just to comment negatively in the comments, but the video is monetized and just by them watching they are giving that person money. Between this stunt and charging $8k despite if it may or may not be worth it. You can definitely say she’s a marketing genius.

There's a BIG difference between 2k and 8.5k, so my guess is that her prices weren't clearly stated (or at all) when the couple inquired, which makes her TikTok come across as elitist and snobby.... • @J_Mock92
    @J_Mock92 4 месяца назад +25

She can charge whatever she's able to, and people have clearly paid it, but her TikTok comes across like she's looking down on people who cant afford her prices. We obviously don't know exactly what happened, but it sounds like the couple who "inquired with a 2k budget" weren't aware of her prices if she had to tell them it "starts at 8.5k," and she comes across as snobby. I get that people try to bargain sometimes, but thats a HUGE jump in price, so my guess is that she didn't have her prices stated clearly (or at all) when they inquired, and there was some sort of misunderstanding.
People shouldn't be putting down her work like that, but I dont think she should have made the TikTok in the first place, because it just seems like she's putting down the couple who couldn't afford her. They clearly liked her work enough to want to hire her, so it just makes her seem elitist and rude, especially since that couple probably _knows_ she's referring to them 🤷

  • @unusualearthling

For me personally it was her tiktok that bothered me, not her prices. I don't care how much someone charges because when/if I'll want photos for my wedding, I will start looking within my price range (and I respect the work that goes into it). It was her attitude which felt condescending and in my opinion, that is why she got such a backlash. Because then people went and looked into her portfolio to check if she is 'worth it'. Feels as if she did this to get some attention, but she could have worded it differently. I personally would not book her due to her attitude, even if I had such a high budget. Just a personal opinion though.

This video was really frustrating to watch because all you did was defend her, and I get that, but you didn't mention the fact that the WHOLE issue was her attitude. She was basically shitting on photographers and clients with a lower budget. My wedding photographer was $4000-$5000 and INCREDIBLE. It wasn't what she is charging or her work. Most comments I read on tik tok and every duet I watched on this was complaining purely about her expensive pricing and that her work was awful (which is why most of my video is about this). I didn't read any comments about her attitude (maybe I missed them), but I can DEFINITELY see how her tik tok could be offputting. I agree with you that attitude is a big factor. No one should be shamed for having a budget. I've worked with budgets and payment plans for my clients if they need more time or only want to pay a certain amount (and we adjust what services they receive) - as long as that works for both parties. So yes, attitude is important!

Not all HCOL are the same. Just moved to the LA area and the gas alone is almost 2 dollars per gallon more. For someone who travels to their work, possibly many miles it can influence pricing but I think we can all agree that it isn’t so much the pricing as the attitude.

  • @baka_yu9343
    @baka_yu9343 4 месяца назад +11

I agree with other commenters here: I don't think her work itself is the issue as long as the clients are happy, or her pricing since people are booking her.
Her attitude, however, is a big yikes. Mocking people for having a lower budget and enquiring about if it could work with that doesn't deserve this kind of "lol no". They didn't ask her to do it for free (in which case I'd get it), 2k is a lot of money to most people, so it's not an insultingly small budget. Hell, I have friends that had an entire wedding for that price (granted, not with a professional photographer in it, but as perspective, this is literally the price people will pay for the entire day). That's what makes me feel iffy. The condecension. It's perfectly reasonable for her to tell them it's not going to work out with her, but blasting that online, even in this anonymous state, feels tasteless to me.

Kind of scary to think about as a photographer, but I do agree with the criticism. There’ll be a point in the near future where phone camera photos are able to be inexpensively and easily retouched in the style of any photographer and we need to prepare for that or risk becoming just another group of artists denying the inevitable impact of the coming technological revolution.

The problem is her attitude. People may pay it but I think many take much better photos than her and arent snobby. 8.5k sounds insane to me.. but i live in the midwest. Thats 3 months of take home pay for me. 😂 If her costs were that high and she wasnt rude, she wouldnt be getting roasted like this. You can't act like elitest / better than & mock a 2k budget while having photography that doesn't look spectacular. She's worth it to some but her attitude isnt it.

I actually came to your channel today to rewatch an old video where you and 4 of your photographer friends photograph the same model in different locations, but in each artist's individual style. Please do more of those. 🙏
Instead, I've been stopped in my tracks by this divisive situation.😵‍💫
At first, I thought people might be using the term "blur" when they mean "bokeh" but that's not the case.
Radial and motion blur can be artistically applied. But the samples I saw are "out of focus" blur, which is what she's going for. If she says this is her style, then she can use this as a clause to mitigate having to rebate unhappy clients. Clever.
I hope client demand moves away from this "out of focus blur" style.
Much like interior decor style, it's the rich with more money than taste dictating a trend. Wealthy/famous give a magazine interview on their new beige walls, and this results in fans who aspire to be like them, creating a demand for beige. Then beige paint price spikes.
I feel the same is going on here.
If people check out Google reviews. In the last 4 days, the photographer has received many 5 star reviews...from other photographers coming to her defence. Not clients. Though there are previous 5 star client reviews.
It's good to see photographers who are also competitors rallying behind another, but their reviews of camaraderie are skewing the data. 🫤

I've seen photographers charge 6500 easy, and it makes sense for the amount of time, back and forth client communication, meetings, plannings, permits, prints, storage space, etc.... No one is forcing anyone to hire this photographer so the hostility is unnecessary and a bit cruel to go after someone running a business some way. I doubt someone would drop this amount of money without knowing and understanding the style beforehand. I'm also 100% certain the photographer also gave a whole side of the gallery of 'traditional' safe shots as well for the family, so for these people going after photos that isn't to their taste remind yourself that someone loved their wedding gallery. Seeing their own wedding pics go viral being dragged is senselessly mean.

It’s not that she’s worth that amount or that the client feel like she’s worth that amount is the fact that many clients are actually ignorant and don’t know what they’re actually paying for and I see that very commonly when I was an amateur and have improved over the years I’ve seen that. Falls on the customer to do their research to what they’re paying for. At the end of the day most of the time when you see photographers that are amateurs or even average clients for that amount of money nine times at 10 the client is the ignorant one.

Yeah I agree with most of these comments. Tbh it kinda sounds like the 8.5k may have been a package rather than 1 day service, but I could be wrong. Either way, if she charges that much and people pay, eh not my business. (Although I do agree those photos are hella ugly and not special enough for wedding day photography, but that is my opinion and taste.) Her attitude is I think why people called her out so harshly. She’s a business person, but acting so rude and childish. Someone INQUIRED a sensible budget/amount for services. It’s normal as a business to respond back with starting prices. However why call them out and act so smug…like 2k is chump change?? Act like a grown up and a business person and treat people who like your work and inquire with respect. It’s not a big ask.

I agree with everything you said Jessica! Although $8000 was waaaay outside our budget, I can see the value of why people spend so much on photography and $8000 in CA is actually average for wedding photography and a lot of people charge 10 grand and up! If you can't afford it, that's fine, but find a photographer that isn't as established, but has some wedding photography under their belt. I think she could have been a bit more kind to people with $2000 budgets, like for example, as a freelancer, I would come back to the client and say, "For my main wedding packages, I start at X amount, but for your budget I'm willing to do X amount, but it's also possible she doesn't want to spend any amount of her time on smaller cheaper projects, and that's just life. She's well within her right to choose what projects she wants to take on and what she doesn't.

I do agree there was a better way for her to address the couple who only has a 2k budget. I don’t know the rest of the body of work of this photographer, or where these particular photos were taken, but I do think when people critique wedding photos, one thing they may not consider is that the photographer doesn’t have control over the venue. If the get ready area is a hotel room or a bathroom in an estate and looks like an ordinary bathroom, or a wedding is in an actual backyard there’s only so much creativity you can have. And for the dress photo, if the room has blank walls, or the room where the bridal party is getting ready is a disaster and the wall is the only place you can take a photo of the dress, what are you supposed to do if the bride has requested a dress photo of that style? While a photographer should be prepared with lighting, you also can’t make those special true natural lighting shots with light that’s simply not available, whether it be due to weather, time of day, or the venue and a lack of windows(even the direction the house is facing in relation to where the sun is in the sky will effect the availability of natural light).

2000 is a good budget. Maybe a lil higher for California but It’s crazy for 8500 for the quality. But I guess if the photographer is there from dawn to dusk and the trip is long distance and an extra shooter maybe justifiable. But it got to be a lot of extras to make it worth that for me.

She can charge whatever she wants. People booked her and they paid it. The thing is if someone can afford that they are operating in a different class. $8k is only shocking because it’s a lot of money to most people, but $8k probably isn’t a lot to her clients.
People think it’s crazy charging $8k for photos but some people spend more than that on purses and shoes. Charging that much she also controls the type of clients she has. Only a specific class of people can afford that. So charging that much she ensures she’s only working in that class of people. The housing market and restaurants use the same tactic.
I also think with wedding photography specifically you are paying for the entire service. Looking at the few photos she post online isn’t the same as what a full service she probably delivers.

8k on a wedding day is still crazy, I do work as a photographer and I used to be a bridal sales person. I usually just work 200 or so a shoot or do 25 for a photo. But the arrogant adittude she gave off (tick tok person) was so bad it reminded me of working as a bridal stylist. What happened was that sale dresses were treated so vastly different and none of the other workers I worked with even offered to spot clean them like I did. They told me I was wasting my time. I told them its still a brides dress. They lost sight of the fact that some were spending just what they could to marry the love of their life and that's the point of everything its someones dream not a place to outlandishly charge them and take away from them starting their lives together like that. Thats highway robbery.

It is low to attack an individuals livelyhood. If people want to critique a big multinational corporation fine they can take it...but to attack small buisnesses or an individual that works free lance is pretty low. The customers know what to expect from her page. If she only does like 10 or 20 weddings a year then she needs to charge enough to make a living. Im the opposite i totally undervalue myself and do underpaid work all the time. Im an artist and i paint portraits of ppl. At this point its more of a hobby than a career even though I did study art at university but I charge about 150 dollars for an A3 size portrait in oil paint and that barely covers my oil paints and the hours spent. People are so cheap the often try and haggle on an already extremly low price. I used to be a makup artist when i was younger and i would wind up doing friends makeup and hair for free all the time or id be doing brides and bridesmaids for like 50 dollars a face. It was fun but it wasnt even worth my time, the use of makup products, the petrol, driving there etc. life is really hard for creative types unless we value ourselves

Honestly, photography is expensive bc it is art. It is also how someone makes a living. So when you only can typically do wedding shoots on weekends and during busy season, you have to have that money all year. Meanwhile, if you book a “mini” photo shoot, and the photographer has multiple mini photo sessions in a day, they are a few hundred dollars a piece if not more. So basically, you and every other session that day are splitting the cost of the photographer for a whole day. When you want her to be yours for the whole day, it’s obviously going to cost. I do think the photographer was being smug about the $2,000 thing, but the prices are dictated by the location and the demand. She is OBVIOUSLY in demand if she is making that money.
To the person that says it looks like she’s in a bathroom, she probably was. Many people get ready for weddings in their own homes or in churches or bathrooms (depending on wedding.) Sooo, yea, she may have been shooting that photo in the bathroom while the bride was getting ready. A photographer does not dictate or reserve a location, they work with what they have.
