I did 3 tours in Iraq and every time I had a projector. And every time my living space became the movie space for my maintenance teams and other soldiers in my units. I inspired some of our guys who did patrols to get one as well for over night missions they did. By my third tour I had built a 100" screen out of plywood and white sheets I bought online. Even one of my 3 room mate's had his own projector as well for an opposite facing wall. We had our door open one night and our Commander walker by as I was watching a movie and my room mate was playing on his chipped Xbox 360. He just stood there for a minute stunned that we had entertainment locked down so good in such a tiny space. This tiny projector would be perfect for soldiers who deploy. When they come back to base such a tiny projector is perfect to shooting movies in small rooms. Honestly having a projector was my best deployment item I brought each time. And even when you come back from deployments they are wonderful in barracks as you can easily lock it up when your done with it. I wish I could of had one of these back then. My pelican case would have been allot lighter and smaller lol.

I guess it's a way to decensitise soldiers to the harsh reality of it. I am hoping to one day get a phone with a built in projector or a small quick connect projector module, I can easily see that being very convenient. It likely won't happen until solid state batteries reach commercial level though as their massively improved energy capacity is going to be integral to that kind of function. The most recent figures I have seen put Al-ion batteries at having double the energy density of Li-ion batteries with that expected to reach triple.

This brightness at 300 nits is worse than even budget TV's, so it's a pointless argument, unless it's specifically bought for it's mobility such that you don't want to carry around a 60" TV. At £400-£500 it would make a good outdoor camping display, but at £800 they're pretty much limiting the customer base to traveling sales executives and DJ's.

biggest problems i see with this are the battery life, and the lack of tilt. Out of the box it's supposed to have 2.5 hours of battery life, so about a movie's length - but as time goes on and the battery gets older that battery life might shrink to a too short time. The lack of an ability to tilt it also seems a little annoying and Linus somewhat demonstrated that. I understand that the former is a restriction of the form factor and the fact that laser draws alot of power, and the latter can probably be fixed by a stand... just want to put out the only two real criticism i have for this, otherwise looks like a really neat product.

I've had a Nebula Capsule since 2019 - it's an older version with lower resolution and an older version of android. And although it is a handy little thing, it certainly has some issues you start to notice after a while. Due to it's small size it has to do a bunch of cooling with a relatively small fan, and is thus quite noisy. It also has a lot of software issues where it'll just freeze or shutdown whatever app you're running. And most apps takes 20-30 seconds to load. Now, it could easily be that it's just because the Nebula Capsule was just at the lower limit of what can run that version of android, so it's possible that this new version has gotten rid of all those issues, but it's not easy to tell from this review.

One thing would have been nice to know: can you flip it upside down ( like if you were to hang it from a ceiling )? Would it automatically flip the screen or would you need to do it? I know it's meant to be a portable one but even in a van you might want to put it on the ceiling

    • @emma70707
      @emma70707 2 года назад

There are actually quite a number of devices that exist for mounting cameras upright from the ceiling ("upright camera mount") that utilize the same screw attachment--I would just buy one of those if you wanted a permanent-ish solution. I suppose it would make accessing the controls a bit more of a pain, but in a van you might also just want a shelf since it's battery operated.

Our projector was some crappy no-name thing from years ago we had to cool with a room fan and a cold bucket ontop of it because otherwise it would die.

Laser projectors ether use lcd or dmd chips, just like normal projectors. The only difference is that laser projectors have lasers instead of leds or mercury bulbs. Lasers are a little more efficent, but they don't offer better colours nor better contrast.

What I don't understand is taht these laser projectors seem to just use laser(s) as the light source, but still use DLP for actually getting the image. Why are there no laser projectors that scan the whole image line by line? That way, you should actually never have focussing issues, and it should be more efficient?

Laser projectors should be able to cast an image or video onto oddly shaped surfaces without issue. Making them perfect for projection mapping. Does the camera also serve to disable the laser light source when someone or a pet walks in front of it? Thus preventing that someone or critter from being blinded? I saw Jerry Rig Everything, tear apart video that shows the laser itself is only a light source. It passes the laser's light through a color wheel to create the images. You might have tried testing it out for gaming applications or other everyday uses such as image editing, video editing, audio splicing or mixing, or other types of workloads.

    * throat clearing * The hype is misplaced. This is not a true laser projector. True laser projectors are Laser Beam Scanning (LBS) projectors, where R, G, B lasers bounce off a MEMS and towards the screen. They are always in focus, which means you can project on any surface, including curved, they have true black, no light projected, they don't go out of focus because you bumped into it, and are very energy efficient. We had this in an astonishing package way back in 2015, the Sony MP-CL1A. 1920 x 720 pixels, lamp life ~ 10,000h, screen mirroring, bluetooth audio, all in about the size of a phablet. It was amazing. You could have a little picture frame on a wall, pull on it and bam! 90° shelf with a hidden projector appears, ready to project on the opposite wall. Snap a magnetic USB cable to it (because yeah, 5V USB charging), fire up screen mirroring (MiraCast) and you're good to go. With the best remote possible, a multi-touch phone. The only downside I must acknowledge for the sake of completeness is the tiny beast wasn't super bright. Who cares. That's what night time and shutters are for.
Unfortunately this technology, although truly adequate for the task, was discontinued. I hoped to buy two or three of these, put them on robotic arms and create an infinite screen or an EBAIP (Edge-Blended Array of Inexpensive Projectors). Because black in video projects as no light at all you could hide the edges of the frame by just fading to black. Syncing the motion of the projectors to the motion of the video they project you could trick the eyes endlessly. Make fake screen frame that suddenly expands, a Pong ball bouncing across the whole wall, or even 3 walls, projection mapping effortlessly on weird surfaces etc. Furthermore, due to the light weight and low power consumption of these true laser pocket projectors you could create an immersive visual experience out of a backpack, off-grid, at festivals, out in Nature, anywhere.

  • @maulerrw

Please note this is a DLP projector. It's not actually shooting laser beams out that scan an image, the lasers simply act as high efficiency lamps. The video kinda suggests beams. (So no eye melting lasers, you're all fine)
So far there's only ONE consumer laser projector I know of that actually shoots out lasers, it's old and it's like 480p. Very neat though.
There is a difference, as shooting out beams means they use mirrors to direct beams rather than traditional pixels. Beams are always in focus and effectively have "infinite" focus ability.
According to Projector Central, this projector is a "laser phosphor" projector, which uses a violet laser to excite a phosphor disc to produce a brilliant white light, which effectively replaces a traditional lamp or LED. This basically just means it's no different to a standard DLP projector, the laser part just means long life and high efficiency.
That suggests it should also have a colour wheel inside, though I can't see that information.
    www.projectorcentral.com/Anker-Capsule_3.htm
Still a super cool little 1080p projector!

I paid $600 for the Capsule II and no horizontal keystone sucks. If your use in bedroom you can't put it beside bed and it always has to be in front of you. Also greens might be pumped up in this version but reds came off as pink (so pink faces sometimes) on the 2nd one. And not quite 3 hours so no Avatar, Braveheart, etc but you can use a powerbank with it so that's nice. The best selling point for it is power outage. I live in Florida and last hurricane knocked the power out for 5 days so as long as I had power banks, I had stuff to watch.

Edit: My Mars2pro doesn't depend on Android tv or wifi unlike this laser one, Mars is way way way better since Android tv is simply not portable in any way and is completely dependent on a constant wifi connection.
