How Powerful Are The Boeing 777’s GE90 Engines?

  • At the start of December, a video surfaced on Twitter showing the testing of a pair of GE90 engines on a SWISS Boeing 777 in Zurich. This test took a dramatic turn when the thrust of the powerplants caused damage to parts of a noise protection hangar. The visually spectacular incident left acoustic protection material strewn all over the surrounding area, giving the impression that a tornado had touched down in the middle of the hangar. Using this example, let’s look at just how powerful the Boeing 777’s GE90 engines are.

    Yes, you missed the fact that ONE of those engines can accelerate, lift-off ond climb a Boeing 777-300ER at maximum weight in case the other of the two engine fails at take-off after the decision speed V1. This is more impressive than "keeping the 777 flying after one engine fails". And another remark: When you put the title "How Powerful Are The Boeing 777's GE90 Engines?" - you should answer the question. The international unit for power is the Watt, or Kilowatt, or Megawatt. Please try to convert the non-international unit of "lbf" to ISO (international units) Note : The international unit for force is N (Newton). I have done the conversion to Newton, Watt, HP and PS. But I let you do the same. Enjoy learning something.

    • @oscarmartin2300
      @oscarmartin2300 2 года назад +4

      The combined power of the B747-8 engines is of 266,000 lbf, whereas the combined power of x2 GE9X Max power is of 268,000 lbf. So the answer to your question is YES. However, the wing design of the jumbo is to fit 2 engines each, so the weight distribution is different. In order for the 747-8 to have two engines, it would have to undergo major design changes in the wings and possibly in the fuselage and other components too. On the other hand, we must not forget that GE9X engines are operating max power if installed on jumbo aircraft, and these are not supposed to work under max pressure all the time because they could fail.

    The GE90-115B is rated at 115,000 lb. (514 kN) thrust, the most powerful engines in commercial operation in the world. Why we haven't seen more damage like this is actually kind of amazing. The upcoming GE9X-110B1A (GE agreed up upgrade the engine thrust to 110,000 lb. (490 kN) thrust in consultation with Boeing) on the 777-9 will probably generate almost as much blown air as the GE90-115B.

    The 777 & GE 90B is marriage made in heaven's so to speak. Both engine & aircraft are absolutely perfect combination for safety & reliability. To quote nat geo aircrash investigation on the Heathrow 777-200 ER crash involving the rolls royce variant engines, 777 is the gold standard in aviation safety. Feat of engineering to be marvelled at. Truly iconic.
    GE -90 B is stated to have six sigma levels of inflight shut downs i.e. 3 times in a million flight hours.
    When GE engineers sat down to make this series of engines they probably said lets build something flawless.
    For the 777 aircraft type GE won the battle for safety & reliability hands down, rolls royce and pratt&whitney are distant competitors.
