  • On the eve of crowning a new Ladies' Figure Skating Olympic champion I thought it might be fun to take a look back at Dorothy Hamill's Gold Medal ceremony at the 1976 Winter Olympics. Hamill won the gold by winning both the short and long programs that year, and while there is plenty of coverage of her skating performances that night I don't believe the actual ceremony has been seen since that night 46 years ago in Innsbruck, Austria. Enjoy the crowning of America's Sweetheart! No ownership of this material is claimed.

Dorothy still looks about the same. She worked so hard for many years to get to that gold medal podium. She was America's sweetheart. Always love to hear the National Anthem.

“Yes, and now, Dorothy Hamill has joined Tenely Albright who won a gold in 1956, lovely Carol Heiss in 1960, Peggy Fleming in 1968.”

Thank you for posting this presentation and for the benefit and information of you and others who view this and to refresh your memory, the words of our national anthem were written by Francis Scott Key in the aftermath of the British attack on Baltimore's Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 when he saw the American flag still waving over the fort that morning and below are Mr. Key's words if you want to look them over while listening or sing along as you stand with your hand over your heart.
The anthem begins at the 2:47 mark.
O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
what so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,
whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
o'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
o'er the land of the free
and the home of the brave?
    👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

No. The United States won three golds in 1976. Two in speed skating and one in figure skating.

Correct. Peggy Fleming was our only gold medal in Grenoble 1968

Why did they change the medal ceremony!!!!😢. Now they are handed a stuffed animal until the end of the week when you finally get your medal in the main plaza. Takes away from the moment right after your performance. They don’t even televise the ceremonies half the time!
