After winning the 1972 World Series, The Swingin' A's whoop it up in the postgame locker room but then clean themselves up with a popular hair product of the day. What's unique about this ad is the use of postgame footage. I don't remember any earlier commercials that used this technique? Wasn't as fast as Mick the Quick Mickey Rivers on the Yankees but he could run
power, speed, great arm, range, and lifetime 300. Most importantly a great teammate and person.
BS...he just didn't want 3000 off of him. Acting.
one of the greatest shows of all time.the ironic thing is that Alan Alda did not agree to join the cast until the very, very end.
I was at this game. Thanks.
Back before FREAKS ruined the world
Yaz was like The Rolling Stones, can pack a stadium any night of the week.
That change-up pitch was wow. Luis Tiant did not give an inch. Love it.
Dude I thought the TV audio existed will be fun, but I am shocked the broadcast now exists. Thanks dude! Question, if Joe Gilliam was on this team (Steelers), he played decent in '74, would he be different than Harris or not?
Hard to say. He wasn't a runner like Harris so he probably wouldn't have coughed it up running the ball, but he did like to sling it which was opposite of Chuck Knox's Ground Chuck approach. Do you think the game would have turned out differently?
Thank you for this. Question. Is there anything of the pre or post game show? I ask because Jack Whitaker and Lee Leonard hosted that year.
Not that I've seen. Maybe it will pop up someday..
Glad your back, this was great to see. Hope you have more coming soon.
Always great to see NFL games on CBS or NBC before 1977-78. Pat Summerall started the 1974 NFL season as an analyst for CBS. Midway through the season, he became the lead NFL on CBS announcer with Tom Brookshier (John Madden replaced Brookshier in 1981) A 27 year run as lead announcer on the NFC networks of CBS and Fox for Summerall began. Thanks for posting! Welcome back.
Growing up in the Boston area I had a friend who thought Yaz's name was "Yaskrzemski," with 2 "k's."
Back when ballplayers were real guys.
4th of 10 postseason games for Tarkenton.
I do think it was 11 total because he did play in the 1978 playoff game at LA. But you're right this was his 5th game. Someday soon I hope to learn how to count! Here you go..⭐
@@retromaven2159 Make sure not to count either Vikings' playoff games in 1977. Tarkenton was hurt and Bob Lee played at QB.
I thought I'd post this quick comment to answer the usual questions. YES, I have the complete version of this game. NO, I will not post any more of the game than what is here. YES, the comment notes are necessary for posting the clip and maintaining its integrity. I do apologize if you find them distracting, just know they are a necessary evil. Oh, the first viewer who finds the incorrect factoid in the clip (didn't catch it in time) earns a much-coveted RetroMaven Gold Star⭐ Don't forger to pound that LIKE button!!
this is Tarkenton 5th game not 4th in the playoffs
@@darylevrba6705 You got it Daryle, but this wasn't the one I caught afterwards! Someone will earn another gold star if they find it! ⭐

@@retromaven2159 I'd also like to welcome you back. And with a real gem.
Dick Motta was another coach that hung around way too long. His lifetime record doesn’t reflect how good he was. He is lifetime 80 games under .500. Because his last 6-7 seasons were pathetic futility. Sacramento & Denver he was 65-165.
Go Yaz
Those bastards cut out the entire last verse. Happy New Year 2025
I always muted the TV and listened to him. I think that he was quoted as saying: "When the game got boring, I made it sound like World War Three!"
I still have the Globe sports page when Yaz hit his 400th.
I was at the game, I still have my ticket stub!!
Yogi is my first pick all time. possibly the greatest ballplayer who ever lived.
Bring the NBA back to Buffalo!
i don't remember tiant as a yankee.
What a ridiculous clip
Gee thanks, over 460K viewers agree with you!!
@ yes they do
I was 10 in '67' when they won American League Pennant on the last game of the regular season, the last out was a soft pop- up to Petrocelli. Remember it like it was yesterday.
Well Merv and group, she shut you & your guests down.. Simply the Best. PERIOD !
Three all-time immortals -- Yogi, Drysdale, and Vin Scully.
When Evert came into the scene a lot of women players were jealous but Bille J. King got upset and told them that Chris will be good for the game and good for women tennis.
Mickey Lolich for the Hall of Fame.
Anyone know where I can find the music that plays when Leslie is scaling the castle wall?
Tiant belongs in the HOF
Sensacional
Yogi came out of retirement with the Mets. One game. He struck out three times. That was a month's worth for Yogi. He promptly retired for good.
2:05 Styxhexenhammer? 😂
Yastrzemski (Yast-shem-ski)
The day Tiant became a Yankee, I almost cried.
Even in those days Fenway was such a dump.
I hate watching her stroke techniques. She really hits too flat for me.
I was riding my bike, passing Fenway one night. A couple stopped me and offered me their tickets for game 2 of a double header. The first game had run into extra innings and they couldn't stay. So, I thanked them and got to see Tiant vs Guidry, and that ended in, IIRC, 14 innings. The bullpens had been depleted in the first game, so Tiant & Guidry made it 11 innings (? at least 10). Final score: 2-1 RED SOX!!! What a game!
Do you have the Jets NBC broadcast against Dolphins and Steelers in October 1973? Weeks #4 and #6.
Sorry, no. Not known to exist in the network archives....
@@retromaven2159 What Jets game from 1974-1975 do you still have recorded in cartvision tape that is not on RUclips, especially 1975?
@@_thatscrazy Nothing from those years unfortunately...
@@retromaven2159 Dang. I thought there had to be more
Baseball was different back then. It seems like all the stats were more meaningful and people really had closer identification with the players and the city. I think it might have something to do with social divisions and lack of community. Maybe baseball is great depending on how united a community can be.
There will never be a player like Yaz again, the blue-collar worker patrolling the green monster day in and day out with a fierce attitude and always getting the most out of every at bat. Yaz.... a Red Sox legend forever in our hearts ! Playing the game when it was fun and staying with a club was something they took great pride in. A HOF'er on playing the game the way it was meant to be played. A 100% was considered a bad day for Yaz ⚾️
A 'no-doubter' and Rico didn't flip the bat or even stand at the plate for 5 seconds 'mirin it....ah, those were the days
Luis Tiant pitched for the Portland BEavers and finally got up to the big show ! Congratulations!
The worst five minutes of my life and I have been struck by lightning!
What in the world was the home plate umpire doing 3/4 of the way up the 3rd base line? Wasn't even a rotation play? Then he had to run back toward home and completely out of position. No wonder he missed it.
Safe, and I'm Sox fan.
LOL at everyone saying he was safe. Runner never even touched home plate because Gibson blocked him
You are an extremely astute fan of the game!! Thanks!
