  • Achelous River, perhaps the second most hated map in Company Of Heroes, trailing behind the Scheldt. Achelous River is a map that is heavily skewed towards the Axis' favor, and is a particularly difficult map for Allies to win, as everything just devolves to an artillery war that revolves around destroying bridges.
Usually on this map you'll see double US play on this map, but I decided to take a huge gamble and play as the British on Achelous River. Which is very uncommon, as Brits tend to struggle greatly on this map. I hope you all enjoy!

Its possible to go Priest on this map, provided your teammate goes Airborne.

I generally like your videos, but this one was cringe. Why can't you just build more arty and level his base and then go in with kangaroos? Why waste all those resources on commandos and tetrarchs and demos that are going to explode on your face while you're repairing those bridges? Also, why no counter-battery against the hummels and mortars? And if you're going to use kangaroos, why use so many of them, just use one of them with piats to clear out defenses and throw arty on everything you see and follow in with the rest of your infantry.

Considering that his teammate is also defensive doctrine I think he had to consider taking the offensive to them instead of arty spam. Fire and Maneuver I guess

@@mr.joshua8664 I agree with that. That would be very valid for a map without critical chokepoints, but would not be as effective for a map like Achelous river, where arty can effectively remove the possibility of a frontal assault by destroying the bridges and hence all approaches. The player with the most arty controls this map, regardless of doctrine. Your approach would work very well in a map that was on open land and had flats instead of advancement only possible through critical chokepoints, in which case he could overwhelm his enemy with superior firepower with commandos.

Well for one I didn't go Royal Artillery, so I didn't have supercharged rounds. Against hummels the enemy will always outrange you. Second you can't really win an artillery war against a Panzer Elite player who went Scorched Earth. Because, even though that player can call out only 3 hummels, he/she is also likely to have a Bergetiger. Every single hummel you kill and fail to destroy the wreck will result in a free artillery unit for that player. If they are smart they will call in new hummels first, to reach their 3 unit limit and then use the Bergetiger to revive the previously destroyed hummel. So there are times when PE players can have 4, 5, 6 hummels and the results can be quite nasty. So in this type of game as Allies you have to push in to stop them, this match is a classic example of when the enemy overinvests in artillery and has nothing to stop you when you get into their face.

@@mr.joshua8664 Very correct assessment. You never want to go the same doctrinal role as your teammate. US infantry is known for being 'that' artillery doctrine. If I went royal artillery as well. Not only would I have been competing against the enemy, but I would also be competing against my teammate over our niche role of being the support artillery player. Never overlap your niches and try and keep your roles diverse.

@@MathiasCzR01 You make some excellent points, especially about the zombie hummels. Yes you needed an offensive doctrine to balance his doc out, since someone has to do the dirty work of a frontal assault eventually and you can't sit, hold and arty all day. I still believe you could have invested in more AT with piat commandos, or maybe even go fireflies despite the heavy investment in what is effectively a change from air to armor, because commandos have limited AT, even with tetrachs and don't stand a chance against panthers.
But overall, I do agree with you that brit arty has a short range and your partner should have built arty much earlier once he saw that the enemy was blowing up bridges and getting campy. I understand your gameplay much better now.
