I played The Jewel In The Lotus yesterday and I really got a Harold Budd with Marion Brown vibe listening to it. It came before Budd's album and I can't help but wonder...
I'll play Gnu High later today. Such a great album.
I bought Pharoah when it came out and was blown away how valuable it is. Damn near $1000!. I had no idea.

A wonderful ECM segment. Thanks. So many memories of artists I found during those early ECM years. Bittersweet for me as the only in-person ECM lover I had was my younger brother who died this year. As I watched it was impossible to not think, Oh man, I gotta call A and tell him about this album we missed. Nonetheless, so wonderful to discover a couple of albums we totally missed. I'll enjoy in A's honour.

More great ECM! Grazing Dreams is still missing from my collection. I wasted the whole day yesterday taking the bus up to Tunnel Records in SF. Couldn’t find anything I really wanted. There was a copy of Arthur Brown’s Kingdom Come that I almost bought but the vinyl turned out to be beat to hell. Similarly, there was a pink rim Island copy of Here Come the Warm Jets with a really clean cover, but the vinyl was scratched up. And there was a copy of Ash Ra Tempel Seven Up on the wall, but that was way out of my price range…$225, and I’m almost surprised it wasn’t more. First time I’ve ever left that place empty handed.

I love the Ziggy Stardust OST the energy is just so right on, and it's everything I love about GLAM era Bowie. It's Punk with a Rocky Horror Picture Show vibe & feel to it that's just irresistible. Also in regards to Hip Hop, ironically I just repurchased a bunch of stuff on the Sugar Hill Records label. I remembered I had the box-set on CD so snapped it up again with a bunch of vinyl. For those who don't know, all of the music on their releases is an actual band called "Wood, Brass & Steel" after they were sued by CHIC for using their song "Good Times" on "Rapper's Delight." So your getting Rap the way it was not only meant to be heard, but should be heard.

Hey Dereck, You mentioned DANNY O'KEEFE. A great singer-songwriter unknown by way to many people in my opinion.Had quite a few well written LPS. That LP BREEZY STORIES which had MAGDELENA also had my favorite ANGEL SPREAD YOUR WINGS. I often feel the urge to pump the brakes on record buying for awhile, but I always remind myself that the music on these records are like vitamins for the mind, and the mind has power over the body. So I look at my records as being important to keeping me healthy in mind, body and soul. Take care Dereck

Hey Dereck. Fantastic review of the ECM catalogue! That one was really important to let people know about this great label. Maybe you could do a more in-depth review of Abercrombie's Timeless, one of the most influential albums from ECM and in jazz history which sat the new standard for the famous ECM sound. Also a mention of Jack DeJohnnette's fantastic Special Edition albums shouldn't be missing.

Oh, just remember I once even recorded at Tonstudio Bauer in Ludwigsburg. You know about that one, don't you? It was like being at the holy grail of ECM. Jaco recorded Bright Size Life there with Pat Metheny. Those were the times!

I respect your. Preference for sound from musical instruments. As a vocalist I was originally thrown off by sort of disinterest in vocals. Do I totally get it though! I also am very happy to see that people are celebrating fifty years of hip hop. I'm very selective with my hip hop preferring old school, But I really do like the genre & think it has a place in music history.
