don't know how much more honest you can get than a live demonstration lol and glen would just do a post production video which would be more susceptible to being called a dishonest review and chappers is no offense a more capable guitar player who can play all sorts of styles instead of glen who is more of just an engineering expert and focuses usually on metal which there is nothing wrong with thats my favorite genre but chappers can entertain a much wider audience with the various styles he can play
This is an honest review and Glenn would know me well enough to see that. This is an innovation, it's different and in this market that's a dangerous move - there are things I'd change all of which I mentioned, but the truth is I liked the sound.
+Anarchist2013 yeah, but he will say good things about any piece of crap they sent him...his reviews aren't "honest" they are just demos..."first impressions" at best...
SuperVistaprint You mean distorted banjo? Any instrument can technically be metal without distortion. To me metal is a way of composing, not a style of sound, but it might not be the common idea.
+Mezurashii5 ; Uh, old guy here. The term "metal" or heavy "metal" refers to guitar strings - as in "heavy shit played on a guitar". Therefore, any instrument cannot, by definition be considered "metal". The true meaning has been tossed around so much since the 60s/70s that people use the term to describe any music that sounds "heavy".
A Keeper Of Odd Knowledge Except you can sound heavy without distortion, that was my point. Not to mention people use "metal" to describe music that isn't heavy at all.
How about making a guitar like that in which you could swap side parts to different guitar body style parts, like Explorer, Flying V, Stratocaster, Telecaster style guitars in one guitar!
Hey Chappers. i'd just like to say that i only discovered your channel a few months ago, but i absolutly love your energy and passion for music! i am a bass player myself, and in some ways, you make me feel more passionate about music when i watch your videos. so keep up the good work man! really appreciate it! 😃
I’m not sure either; I ordered a red one recently, and if it’s awesome as I think it will be, I’ll probably get a black one or the red/black combo as well.
After all these years watching you and the Captain, I still can't believe that I will blow 20 minutes watching anything you post and thoroughly enjoy it. If you ever get over to Tokyo, Japan let me know. I'll be happy to take you around to all the weird and wonderful guitar shops we have here.
The nice thing about seeing that Chappers has uploaded a new video is that you know even before you have watched it that you will be very entertained the whole video... RUclips gold!
If they built in some bass sounds using a drop octave and a bass amp sim, this could be an even more versatile instrument, especially for one-person multitracks
If this guitar was just the red bit in the middle, and didn't have the weird plastic frame, I would buy one immediately. As it is now, I don't think I'd ever play one on stage. If you ever make a model that's just the wooden part (maybe 15%-20% larger) then I will gladly give Vox 600 of my dollars.
Great demo by Chappers there!! Really interesting iteration of an 'effects' guitar, to make it more usable player friendly agree those knobs ideally need to be moved from the back of the bridge so they can easily reached while playing. Looks that that electronics control section just been put where it is solely because that 'space' was available, if they could move it would be a lot better.
The camera's constant slight movement makes me feel like I'm drunk in GTA, but apart from that, I loved this video, guitar sounds great, interesting technology. after over 60 years, our favourite solid body electric guitars aren't going anywhere. I always enjoy seeing innovation like this :-)
I actually think it looks great, it's nice to see and hear something different from the norm. This would be a really useful gigging and studio tool, and as you said in the vid, something to inspire creativity. Nice one. Cheers, Robbo.
I like the clean sounds and distorted sounds, the effect at 14:02 was amazing to me. The actual style of the guitar was not at first, wow, that is so cool feeling. I would like to suggest full one color throughout the guitar, with maybe the body and the outer shell being one color. If the neck could be another color aside from the natural maple, that would be cool too. The engineering of the guitar, with the sounds, well, sounded very nice, and it was nice to see a professional guitar player play this and not some 2 chord playing , here is clean and here is distorted tester that doesn't play any leads. This was very interesting to watch and learn about. Now would I buy it? the neck profile would have to be a slim profile, and not a rounded one for me. I didn't catch what it was on here, but the neck size would be a huge factor on my consideration. Thanks Rob and VOX guys!
Hi Chappers! I'd just like to say that i like your videos. I learn guitar playing and your videos help me. I'm from Austria. Sorry for my English. You' re a great guy! greetings from peter 🎸🎸🎸
Cameron Evans oh don't get me wrong they do have awesome amps, but I'm not a big fan of their tube amps, they just don't really fit my style. I went into a store to get myself an AC10 and got out with a Laney Cub. But they may have the best sounding modelling amps right now.
I think the handwired AC15 is one of the better medium wattage (15-30 watt) amps out there. But it is of course just a matter of opinion, as not everything is for everyone!
For someone that wants to have the occasional acoustic guitar, banjo or sitar sound on stage, this could be useful, as well as for inspiring creativity. There isn't a lot of discussion on how well made it is (besides the brief mention at the end), with all the focus being on the on board effects. Thank you for the video.
I really like this. Played a Line 6 that had the effects built in and that was awesome. I always was abhored by guitars with built in tones but that Line 6 was pretty cool to play. But I could see myself having plenty of uses for this guitar both in the studio and on stage. Whenever I get a new guitar, this WILL be the one I get.
Hey Chappers, i was at a restaurant yesterday and i heard a country song that had the riff at 3:18 (or a very similar riff.) I was wondering if that was an original riff that you made that may have gotten stolen or copied.
It's "Catalyst" by Dorje (who Rob fronts)...I think it's really good song. there's an official video (I think shot in Malta?) on you tube - I definitely recommend check it out.
...Ha ha ..Rob's quote at 16:16..."My favourite is ..." goes into heavy , hum bucker distortion / tube tone that he gets with every amp/ guitar he already has.....and then check out their faces at this point....priceless !!!
I love how there are 3 different sitting styles in this video, The man who is always spread eagle, the man who crosses his legs, and then the guitar player sitting in a short chair XD
What's the guitar in the endcard video? It looks like something inbetween the natural and satin black ML-3 and I love it. Also I can't find that video on the channel.
yes @ 10:34 ...that was my thought as well when I saw that the vol. actually is fixed to the post fx master volume... amazing... sounds, like this tiny body actually nonetheless stores even a butload of sustain, as far as it sounds...
Only thing I'd ask them to modify is what Rob pointed out: that the gain knob be near the volume knob to make switching between clean and distorted sounds seamless, as you would with a traditional guitar and a cranked amp. Great concept from Vox!
I am a lefty who does a LOT of studio gigs at all levels. Having a van full of various guitars is fine for night time overdubbing gigs in one of the Burbank production bays. No one is there... we can line up stands in the hall. For daytime gigs, I was always too limited. When the Line 6 Variax came out... I waited for something left handed... it took a while. I was considering turning one upside down, but that wouldn't have worked. When I finally got a lefty into my hands, the LAG was unacceptable... like most things from Line 6 tend to be. I'm assuming Vox won't make this left handed... but I can rip the plastic ribbons off and shove that monster into a chunk of Telecaster wood restring it and play it upside down no problem. ;-)
Idea for Vox (great job by the way :) ) : Make a pickup / electronic kit for guitar makers / modders. So we can have the guitar we want around it, place pots wherever we want, and you can sell a lot without being bugged by people not liking your design, crying for a shape or an other... win win :)
my buddy had a Vox SuperBeetle guitar- ES335 style with built in E tuner, "repeater", fuzz, bass & treble boosters, & wah lever behind the bridge. we called her Izabella
How is it the Vox guys haven't tried their own product through an amp before? It's like they don't know anything about it. I'm not prejudging but I'm not buying one, fact. I'm also not thumbing down the video just because I don't like the product. The video is above average quality as per usual from Mr. Chapman :)
Hey rob, just as an idea, could you start a series on your channel that shows off cheap, but amazing, guitars? Maybe show off some of your favorite guitars that are under 300 US dollars, so a little over 200 pounds? That would be extremely helpful to me and others who are like me and really want a good guitar for the price.
For example, i am thinking about the Ibanez GRX70QA, it looks like its a pretty good guitar, and only 200 US dollars. But when i go online all i see are reviews for it, but they are in like polish or russian or something. And all the other ones are just crappy.
***** I've looked at the reviews online for the GRX70QA, i've read nothing but great things. But i am going to guitar center friday so i'll probably test out a few things.
The single coil sound seemed a bit anemic compared to a Strat or Tele, but aside from that, I'm really impressed. I'd love to try one out. Do the extra electronics add a lot of weight? The ABS frame seems like it would reduce the weight, but I'm thinking that it could also be there to mitigate the weight of the electronics. Also, mango is fairly common in acoustic & electric ukuleles and I've heard of it being used for acoustic guitars, but this is the first electric guitar I've seen made from it.
Hey Chappers, Have you ever used a Vox Tonelab EX? They claim that because of the tubes, you can make a solid state amp, or a PA, sound like a tube amp. Wondering if you have an opinion on that. I have learned a lot about tone from your videos, keep up the good work, eh!
would have to agree with you on the gain knob rob. it's a design fault that the "gain" knob is now just an actual volume knob, and what we normally use for the gain knob is behind the bridge. that's kinda awkward. really cool guitar and amazing tone though!
Reminds me slightly of the variax guitars line6 brought out years ago, i am wondering if gigging regularly would it fall apart and repairs wise, I can imagine repairs being specialist as well as expensive. Enjoyed the video though
Exactly, when I was a beginner I used to play like during free day for 8 hours, I was just spending all my tme with a guitar. And when I had to go to school I was playin g in the morning and as soon as I got home That's how you get better. You should also try to play some insanely hard things. Use metronome. If you're playing gainy stuff, play them on clean crunch or somewhere where you really hear all the details and work on your dynamics etc
I think it's pretty cool! It's got a nice crunch to it, along with a nice retro sound as well. Not only that, but the look of the guitar is unique enough to turn heads. This is definitely a piece of gear I wouldn't mind trying out myself!
I am curious though what the difference is between the Starstream Type 1 and the Type 1 Plus as far as the sound banks that are onboard? I am catching this video 3 years after the fact and seen they released some newer models that supposedly have updated sound and different tone wood options. I love that the Stompbox is in the guitar and that you can tweak the effect on the fly. I love Vox amps and should be ashamed for not having heard of this guitar before now. If you can get your hands on an older release and a more recent Type 1 Plus to do a side by side that would be simply awesome to see if the differences are subtle or truly noticeable. I am purchasing the Vox Mini Super Beetle and having a vox guitar that has onboard effects to accompany it would be like the perfect studio rig in a sense and that Super Beetle don't count it out for a great gigging rig for small venues because I ran it through an Orange 4x12 Cabinet yesterday and it can get really loud upon request and not lose the tonal quality. Just curious if I should be searching for the 2018 model Type 1 Plus or if a 2016 model is going to be the same effects just different tone wood?
Needs a miku effect.
Take my money!
Everything needs a miku pedal
special miku edition needs to happen
+Gavin Downie Very true!
I feel like Prince would use this guitar
*would have used
+Mitch Kincaid
Stop reminding me.....T.T
+Mitch Kincaid lol
Ian Anderson he wont.
you know why?
because he is dead
lets see glenn fricker do an honest review of this
haha!! Yes!!
don't know how much more honest you can get than a live demonstration lol and glen would just do a post production video which would be more susceptible to being called a dishonest review and chappers is no offense a more capable guitar player who can play all sorts of styles instead of glen who is more of just an engineering expert and focuses usually on metal which there is nothing wrong with thats my favorite genre but chappers can entertain a much wider audience with the various styles he can play

+My Mental Frame No mate... I'm free to say whatever I want. Go to this point in the video please: 2:00
Those men have definitely been putting their whammy bars in each others' input jacks.
Mac indeed lol
I came into this expecting a distorted sitar sound demonstration.
I'm disappointed.
metal banjo... :/
SuperVistaprint You mean distorted banjo? Any instrument can technically be metal without distortion.

Thanks Joshua I appreciate that :-)
just wondering,
are there chapman basses?
yeah there are! just look up chapman bass :p
Just got ours a few days ago! Rick loves it!
that actually sounds really good, i was expecting it to sound naff looking at the design etc but its cool
I'm surprised how amazing that drive thingy sound, I'd buy pedal like that
genious tip : buy the guitar, then use it as a regular pedal
+LukeV Just stomp on it and say "SCREAM FOR ME DADDIO"
+Jacob Mortensen This comment made me laugh 😂
Rob just can't help himself from breaking out into Catalyst :D
I fucking love that riff
True. Or that countryish thing.
Alexandre Lessa It is an awesome riff and I break out in laughter whenever he breaks out into it. It's almost like shameless self promotion :D
TheDeathJesters catalyst is that his band or a song?
I'm not quite sure why a lot of people don't like the look. I quite like the look of them. Especially the all black one in the picture. :)
I’m not sure either; I ordered a red one recently, and if it’s awesome as I think it will be, I’ll probably get a black one or the red/black combo as well.
i love the shimmer effects!!
I had to pause this video to watch "Catalyst" after you played the riff...I love that song!
After all these years watching you and the Captain, I still can't believe that I will blow 20 minutes watching anything you post and thoroughly enjoy it. If you ever get over to Tokyo, Japan let me know. I'll be happy to take you around to all the weird and wonderful guitar shops we have here.
AWESOME playing Mr chapman best I've ever seen completely in the zone!
that distortion sounds amazing
Those two were loving your AMAZING playing!
14:43 So this guitar makes alien-fart noises. Amazing.
I've never got the whole scarf T-shirt combo, is it cold or not damn it! These things matter!!!
Sure, sure, looks new, has features, sounds natural. No latency, lots of tones, medium cost, yada yada.
Does it Miku?
Martin Krauser or djent.
whats miku?
BLOWN AWAY AT 4:09 LIKE WHAT THE HECK XD Sounds like a real lead channel on a tube amp
The nice thing about seeing that Chappers has uploaded a new video is that you know even before you have watched it that you will be very entertained the whole video... RUclips gold!

wow...that actually does sound very good, im impressed!
Sounds sick! I love the innovation.
I was there when you tried it out at the Vox booth, was so cool meeting you!
oh my GAWD the neck position sounded AWESOME!!!!!!
Would love a bass in this range.
I think it looks fanatstic!!!
I know this is 3 years old but they make one in all white and it looks good
Actually you can unscrew the frame
Wooooah the driven bridge! Wasn't expecting that at all!
Wow, what a great guitar!
That distorted neck single coil sound was incredible!
Great demo by Chappers there!! hey Rob, can you make a video on how to make a pedalboard?
+Killa Gaming he already did
Major schollian when
+Killa Gaming look up quest for the pedal board or something like that
The camera's constant slight movement makes me feel like I'm drunk in GTA, but apart from that, I loved this video, guitar sounds great, interesting technology. after over 60 years, our favourite solid body electric guitars aren't going anywhere. I always enjoy seeing innovation like this :-)
I am so happy you put the firefly theme song in there..
I love you man.
Natural evolution. I expect more onboard electronics in future, including onboard computing.
Interesting!
This reminds me a lot like the Line 6 Variax! Any similarities rob?
I actually think it looks great, it's nice to see and hear something different from the norm. This would be a really useful gigging and studio tool, and as you said in the vid, something to inspire creativity. Nice one. Cheers, Robbo.

+peter ich schaue Rob auch in Österreich 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
+A. Tee Echt? Dann bin ich nicht der einzige hier. 👍👍👍
sounds great, I think it looks awesome
I have a custom guitar that i modified with a proco rat built in behind the bride. I made it at 2012
The Vox guys looked quite impressed with Chappers playing
I have never been a VOX fan and can't say that I have changed.
same here. but their wah pedals are the best
I bough a box amp and it is my favorite one I own.
Cameron Evans oh don't get me wrong they do have awesome amps, but I'm not a big fan of their tube amps, they just don't really fit my style. I went into a store to get myself an AC10 and got out with a Laney Cub.

I think the handwired AC15 is one of the better medium wattage (15-30 watt) amps out there. But it is of course just a matter of opinion, as not everything is for everyone!
That's pretty incredible tech. You should have that sound at 14:10 be a unique intro haha!

Sounds effing awesome....well impressed....I have no problem with companies stepping out of the mainstream.....let's have more please....
They need to take the effect part and sell it separate to where you can add it on to any guitar. I would so buy it then.
This guitar vs the variax jtv: that's the video I'm looking for. Anytime soon?
I can see prog rockers and ambient lovers having a fieldday with this guitar. I like that vox is trying something newish!
this guitar sounds great!
I've never heard a built-in gain-effect in a guitar sound this good.
Shiiiieeee... that distortion sounds bloody fantastic!!!! o.O
Wizardry! Looks and sounds awesome!
Add an auto envelope for volume (AR).. with inverted response as well (ducking).
You should try the Godin Icon Type 2. One of the best guitars i've ever played.
Hey Chappers, i was at a restaurant yesterday and i heard a country song that had the riff at 3:18 (or a very similar riff.) I was wondering if that was an original riff that you made that may have gotten stolen or copied.
5:50 was really cool! The drop D thing. :) Does anyone know what song that is? Or is it just a musical idea by Rob?
It's "Catalyst" by Dorje (who Rob fronts)...I think it's really good song. there's an official video (I think shot in Malta?) on you tube - I definitely recommend check it out.
Thank you. :)
...Ha ha ..Rob's quote at 16:16..."My favourite is ..." goes into heavy , hum bucker distortion / tube tone that he gets with every amp/ guitar he already has.....and then check out their faces at this point....priceless !!!
I went nuts when he played the catalyst intro. I love Chappers!!!
Batteries ?
It would be cool to cross this look and variax abilities
and yes, the sound is shit imo, but they are going in very interesting direction
God I love Bleed the Light, Rob! You should definitely play it more, it's great!
sick! really nice sounds...
Rob, thanks so much brother... This is killer! It actually looks comfortable, is it?
I love how there are 3 different sitting styles in this video, The man who is always spread eagle, the man who crosses his legs, and then the guitar player sitting in a short chair XD

amazing... sounds, like this tiny body actually nonetheless stores even a butload of sustain, as far as it sounds...
I'm sure the clean sounds better in the room, but I loved that gain sound
Well, it sounds 'okay' because you play very well, and you play it through a quite a nice amp. It still sounds like a 100$ squier to me though.
Yuki has the greatest hair I've seen in a while.
At least it looks good on chappers.
that built in distortion is pretty sweet
I really like the aesthetic of the guitar. Will the centre block of wood be available in any other colours?
Pretty sure Black is the other one.
Man! I really want to try this thing out!
Only thing I'd ask them to modify is what Rob pointed out: that the gain knob be near the volume knob to make switching between clean and distorted sounds seamless, as you would with a traditional guitar and a cranked amp. Great concept from Vox!
This is my first time hearing a japanese-european accent. It's super baffling.
Nice guitar btw. It's like a modeling amp, but in a guitar.
britain sucks and your monarchy is gay lol

Make a pickup / electronic kit for guitar makers / modders.
So we can have the guitar we want around it, place pots wherever we want, and you can sell a lot without being bugged by people not liking your design, crying for a shape or an other... win win :)
I think they're very impressed rob
Hey Chappers, would you and the captain ever consider doing a video on Manson guitars? If not, what is your opinion on them?
That's a great, creative idea. Reasonably priced too!
.... But does it come left handed?
my buddy had a Vox SuperBeetle guitar- ES335 style with built in E tuner, "repeater", fuzz, bass & treble boosters, & wah lever behind the bridge. we called her Izabella
Rob you seem to love sneaking a bit of steel panther in where ever possible :D I approve. Eatin aint cheatin.
its beautiful

Look for the S series from Ibanez. They are a lot better and you can get them used for like $200
+ARR0WMANC3R i think he was gearing for brand new more than used. But honestly used is fucking awesome. you can find some crazy deals
Any S series made before 2007 was made in either Japan or Korea.
***** I've looked at the reviews online for the GRX70QA, i've read nothing but great things. But i am going to guitar center friday so i'll probably test out a few things.

What song is it Rob is playing on the acoustic setting at 16:00 ?
Now we ask the most important question. Does it Djent?
can u make a video on how to go from intermediate guitar player to developing the skills of mastering the instrument? im a big fan and i love ur vids!
You play everyday and practice instead of watching youtube videos. There's no secret that will make you a guitar master today
X2
Exactly, when I was a beginner I used to play like during free day for 8 hours, I was just spending all my tme with a guitar. And when I had to go to school I was playin g in the morning and as soon as I got home

dont just practice, find a direction to go for yourself so you dont find yourself stuck doing the same things over and over.
Now, i've only watched 30 seconds of the video, but beautiful is not really a word would use to describe it.
Am I the only one that liked about every feature in this guitar? The Tone sounds awesome, pure VOX quality (not entirely but just enough)
I liked it. im not expert on it's sound but I love the look of it.
+Daehawk same here, It would've been pretty cool if that frame was removable and attachable
