Atlantic Ocean Dinghy Disaster

  • We lost our dinghy in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean crossing from Florida to Portugal. Most sailboats don't hoist their dinghy on davits while sailing across the Atlantic. The seas can be rough and can easily swamp a dinghy, weighing down and snapping off the davits. Just the weight of the dinghy bouncing up and down with each wave or swell can also be deadly for the davits. This is what happened to the sailboat we were crewing on. Rosa del Mar’s davits snapped midway between Bermuda and the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean.
    Now that the davits are broken, and we know about it, the question becomes, how do we handle it? What do we do? Will we make the right decisions? It's not an exaggeration to say that the situation could become deadly if we approach it wrong.
    Our sailing trip across the Atlantic Ocean hasn't been going well. The seas have been rough, and the wind and waves are on the bow. The mainsail is broken and does not function. The transmission won't function in reverse, making docking impossible. Almost every window and every hatch leaks, our clothing and bedding are soaked. We are miserable. We invite you to continue following our journey to see how it concludes.

    Just found your channel. I commend you on Your Honesty and straight forward assessment of many of your situations. I have sailed our Cape Dory 36 since 1984. Carolinas to Bahamas and The USVI quite a few times. What You didn't have on your side was Youth and more experience and that about sums it up. A Younger and more agile Captain and crew along with you and your husband would have been a great addition. I think Your honesty will help many people who feel it's an easy task to cross an Ocean and perhaps rethink their aspirations'. Please keep your channel up so others may learn, but not disparage your efforts.

      Thanks for the kind words! It means a lot to us that folks appreciate our honesty. We’re definitely not too proud to admit a mistake. And if others learn from our mistakes all the better.
      Thanks for watching!!

    Very honest report.
    I really st4uggle to understand why you couldnt winch the dingy up. It shoukd not have taken so much effort.

    • @yard2yacht
      @yard2yacht  Месяц назад

      We tried to hoist it up but it seemed like the winch wasn’t strong enough. Maybe the inner part of the dinghy was filled with water? The davits system and the large dinghy itself was very heavy. We honestly don’t know why it couldn’t be done since it wasn’t our boat. Maybe the captain should have come up with other ideas but it seemed he didn’t know any more than we did. Very sad situation in so many ways and it could have been catastrophic 🫣 It’s painful to watch and we learned too many lessons the hard way.
      Thank you for contributing to this chat 🙏

    Yep, I had an ingrown toenail dug out with no numbing last week, seems more fun than sailing.

    I don't think you're captain or boat was in any way ready for an Atlantic crossing......you should have said before you left that you where crossing the ocean on a wing and a prayer........hope you make it back safely.!!!!!!!

    Some should have stayed on their sofa in front of the TV, they had nothing to do in a completely normal Atlantic crossing.

      Of course, and we pointed that out to the captain before we left Florida but he didn’t want it on deck 🤷

    Two things strike me as not credible in this story. One- it's not possible for anyone to set out on an ocean crossing without backup navigation aids. All you need is a phone with a navionics app and you find the azores no problem. Nobody sets out with less than two backups.So either the captain is certifiably mad or something else is very wrong here. Two- nobody swings a dinghy from davits mid ocean with a following sea. Its an accident waiting to happen. Then once you have the situation, it should be straightforward to tie the painter to a halyard, let it loose from the davits and then hoist it back on the foredeck where it belongs. There was zero reason to just cut loose several thousand $'s . So again either the captain is totally nuts or something else is afoot here

    • @yard2yacht
      @yard2yacht  2 месяца назад

      Monica had Aqua Maps on her phone but had not downloaded the various quadrants needed for the crossing. We trusted the captain to have navigation under control; big mistake. The captain had purchased Navionics for Europe but didn’t realize that he needed the chip to download it to the chart plotter. As for the dingy. Of course it should have been on the deck to begin with. We brought that up to the captain before the journey started. He said he wanted it available on the davits as a backup life raft 🙄. As for cutting it loose, what took 30 seconds in the video was an all day process for us. The davits ended up in the dinghy and we think the inner chamber could have been filled with water. We became concerned that if we actually got it on deck it would be too dangerous to try to wrestle it down. Maybe with a more experienced crew and captain something else could have been done.

      @@yard2yacht yes but at this point you should have walked out on him. You were not held hostage I presume. If you contact a stranger about doing a major passage with him/her it would make sense to first determine if they are a serial killer or sexual deviant or lack the proper background for a west to east Atlantic crossing. Since you saw a problem before you left, it's a bit strange that you did not cut loose at that point, because it would at least indicate to you that there is a seamanship problem.
