Any quick tips for shooting events? Always looking to learn.
I try to get lots of angles. I'll even sneak into places where I may not be allowed 🤫
I enjoy mixing slow motion shots with some real time stuff. Time-lapse are fun for events. Trying to capture emotion is great as well from the crowd.
@@BestBBQShow The more coverage the better, I try and be conscious of record times though, getting shot many ways but just bursts of seconds and I'm out, that way I can see from the thumbnail what the shot was and decide if I need it in post.
@@cameranerdsmedia so many great thing I forgot to include, especially the time lapse bit. such a great hack if you have a spare camera, I always setup my old go pro and let it run out of battery. If I know I need sound and Nat pops with the edit I always error on the side of shooting everything in real time unless I see an opportunity for slo mo.
Hey Javier, thanks for the great content as usual. I have an idea for a future video. After shooting an event like this, you have a ton of footage. How do you choose the right clips and how do you overcome the boredom of editing these kind of videos.
Thanks!
This video is still very valuable in 2024. 👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽thank you for sharing
Clients HATE when their event looks empty. If you have a crowd shot with a gap of people missing, they’ll tell me to take it out or scale it in to fill up the frame. Save this step by planning these shots in advance.
Well said!
It’s good to know that you look for people walking in the frame. I would think you wait for no one to be “interrupting” your shot. Tiny bits of wisdom like that are why I watch videos like this
Dude, this is exactly what I was looking for. Great practical detail. Thank you.
This video was AMAZING, thank you very much, so informative, so well thought out, so useful. Thank you, thank you! 🙏💚
Great job on this video. Lots of useful info here. Thanks!
So valuable! You normally wouldnt get this info without having to learn on the job! Thanks for this, wish I had seen it in my early career!!
Thanks Chidi!
excellent video, so great to have this perspective from the editing chair
Nice video mate, this was a really comprehensive behind the scenes of what it's like and what to think about.
Very informative. Definitely going to utilize these tips on my next event👍
Watched a lot of vidéos about it, this one is the most valuable
Awesome tips! thanks for the video
Great tips, thanks!
Thank you very much man, this is sick
Thanks for sharing. Great info bro
Thank you so much for this!!🙏🏽🔋🔥

Thnx For Sharing!
Great, great, Great info right here.
Thanks 🙏!
You're a good man Javier! Great tips and a really nice feel to the video! From frozen but dry Ireland! ☘️💪🏽👀👍🏽☘️
Always good to see your face, or avatar, however you want to think of it in an internet medium :) emoji game strong.
Really love your Channel Javier! Inspires me to do better every day.
For those stairs:
What about a diagonal dolly down the stairs with an under slung gimbal ?
I wish you did another breakdown like this!
Thank you
Great tips sir.
Thanks Peter!
😍 that wristband shot
I know, so satisfying. :)
I do trade shows6x/yr, so these tips are helpful
Hey Javier. Great vid. Love the content. With regards to what shot to get for the stairs, I personally would have been further back with a telephoto lens and perhaps have people walking by as I racked focus. SO I would start out blurry, in a stationary position, then as people are walking up or down, left or right, past the words, I'd focus on the words. Hope that makes sense. Just an idea.
Having some step with the focus would have been a great shot! Thanks for checking out all the content Mike!
This is awesome. Thanks man! Question - I agree that slow motion is really nice… but would you use it exclusively on a video like the one you did for the Chive? Thanks!
For the text on the stairs I think maybe you could keep the aperture, but use a slightly wider focal length, and then walk up the stairs having each part of the phrase in focus when you pass it. Reverse it in post. I’m a beginner, but just an idea. Not sure if it would work or not.
✌✌
+1 Javier, I'm a local Austinite too :)
Your shots look like gimbal shots! How do you get such good shots hand held?
Such awesome info, bro! It's always good to be reminded to shoot wide, medium, and tight shots of the same subject as much as possible. Question: What is that girl doing at 3:37, and where is that footage? 😆
haha, it would have been just black filling the frame haha!
Hello! I find myself coming back to this channel time and time again because of the practical value you share, and the simplicity of how you share it. Question: Did you shoot everything in 4k 60 fps to make the shots slow mo in post, or did you use a setting on the camera to to shoot in slow mo?
Ruby Benson Thank you! I switch it up depending on the scenario. If I know that the final product won’t require on camera sound I normally shoot for slo mo. But if it’s something like a speech or action that would look great with the sound I then switch to 24
@@JavierMercedes Interesting. Thank you, I'll try that!
Very well done video and good thoughts. However, In my opinion, the horizon seems skewed on almost every shot. Also, the focus seems to be on the background and not the subject on some of them. What is your opinion on having the subject in focus vs the background with the client's logo? I would prefer to have the subject in focus and the background logo still visible but blurry.
You can always try and get coverage of both types if the situation allows
Can you do a video on how to film and record a outside event
Great video Javier. What tips or recommendations would you make to someone shooting an event solo? I’m shooting a book signing event for a short highlight video, but I’m torn on what lenses to rent, if I should rent an additional camera and keep it on sticks and if I should use a gimbal vs handheld with an Easyrig. The event is short 1 1/2-2hrs so changing lenses and setups probably will not be ideal. I’m thinking of going with a 70-200 and a 24-70 and leaving my primes at home, setting the 24-70 on sticks while I knock off closeup shots with the 70-200. I think for audio I’ll just have the speaker hooked up to a lav mic to capture quick sound bites if needed. Any thoughts? I saw you using the 70-200 handheld, how is that? Seems like it would be tough to get a steady shot. Thanks!
My hand held was slo mo though, the 24-70 would be your best bet. Have the 70-200 on sticks cause you will want the steady shot.
Definitely a video to watch many times!!! Got a question! Can I change lenses with the camera on, or I should turn it off every time I want to change one??? I have a Canon EOS R. Thanks Javier. This is a killer info!
I'm not the best at this, When I'm on a shoot I have things on and I just switch on the fly, I'm sure that isn't supposed to be the way you do it but when if you are the one holding up the shot on set because you need to turn off the camera each time you switch a lens, that may lead to not getting a call back next time. I'd say do whatever you think will keep your equipment in tip top shape. But also be cognizant of your surroundings and the situation. Hopefully that helps (Insert shoulder shrug emoji, except I can't right now since I'm on a computer :)
Javier Mercedes Thanks, man. Yeah, this seems to be an interesting matter. I’ve been asking this question and many people said the same. I just don’t want to damage my expensive camera 😄. I love your short clip, the one with the katana, the Apple 🍎 juice and your beautiful boy (I know this hasn’t anything to do with the subject before lol.., but it’s so coool)
As long as as the sensor isn't pointed directly at the sun you shouldn't have a problem. Was out on a shoot with the same setup here and switched lenses all day long no problems.
Icarus Windjammer Thanks a lot 🙏
You should always turn off the camera when switching lenses. The image sensor generates an electric charge that attracts dust.
I need more tip in opening event and closing.
You shoot a need shoot
Which camera are you using?
Hi .
Excus my English, can you tel me the paraleters did you shoot with plz.
Codec. Picture profile. Frame rate.
Tanks and respect.
Hi , please sir , I want to start up this professional work and want to know the cost of vedio machine and how to get the it . Thanks so much sir. . Sunny
I prefer shooting events with an ENG camera. No need to change lens. I can work very quickly this way.
Was all this shot in 60fps?
I like to work ..
Hlo
How much would anybody charge for this? 3 min recap 8hrs of coverage?
