      TNT, High explosive. What does that mean? It's very hard to get it to explode, it takes a "high amount of energy". You can literally throw it it in a wood fire (without a fuse!!!) and it won't explode because that's not enough energy to make it do so.
      Nitroglycerin, Low Explosive. What does that mean? It's very easy to get it to explode, it takes a "low amount of energy". You can nudge the bottle by accident and lose a finger.

      thats not what a low explosive is. a low explosive is one in which the rate of decomposition moves through the material at less than the speed of sound.

    Fun fact:
    Nobel himself suffered from heart problems, and his doctor suggested that he eat nitroglycerin. Nobel refused to ingest what he considered to be an explosive, and he ultimately died of heart complications.

    • @JJeezy1231
      @JJeezy1231 7 лет назад +21

      Many of Nobel's experiments caused explosions in the Nobel factory, one of which killed his younger brother, Emil, along with several co-workers. Ultimately, Nobel was successful in stabilizing nitroglycerin by mixing it with diatomaceous earth (a type of sedimentary rock that easily crumbles into a fine powder).

    • @TheNeXusCore9032
      @TheNeXusCore9032 5 лет назад +12

      2 years late, I know, but I also read that Nobel found it ironic how a dangerous explosive he had used ended up being used to save people with heart complications.

    Obviously, the only reason it didn't work for headaches is that they weren't using a small enough dose. For it to work, you need a pill that contains a drop of water that has heard a vague rumor that there may once have been a molecule of nitroglycerine in a container it once passed near.

    • @allanrichardson1468
      @allanrichardson1468 7 лет назад +4

      R3Testa Also, if your heart is healthy, and you are not having an angina attack, it will lower blood pressure too much and cause a headache.

    One point to contend. Nitroglycerin's main mechanism of action is actually to dilate the smooth vascular muscles in your body, which leads to decreased venous return and a smaller preload. This decreased preload means that your heart will not need to exert as much effort in systole. Less effort = less oxygen required. Less oxygen required = less ischemic damage. I had a friend who was prescribed nitroglycerine and nearly a dozen other drugs to keep his blood vessels dilated enough to prevent his arterial congestion from giving him heart failure. It worked so long as he had it. He commented on how wonderfully relaxing it was. I never tried it but another friend was curious to see what it was like so he got one, his philosophy being that he would try any drug at least once. The friend who was prescribed these survived on the tiny nitroglycerine pills, being the most powerfully effective drug in the dozen or so different kinds of pills he was taking. He later died the evening after being released from the operating room after another attempted heart operation.

    Thanks for a great video. I'm currently wearing a Nitro patch on a daily basis. It is titled on the package: Nitroglycerin Transdermal System 0.4 mg/hr. Below that it reads: Each 16 cm2 system contains 44.8 mg of nitroglycerin. Approximate rated release in vivo 0.4 mg/hr. Contents: 1 System. On the back side, it reads: Each 24 hour period should include a patch-on period of 12-14 hours, followed by a patch-free interval, unless otherwise directed by your physician. 0.4 mg per hour makes sense because it is in line with a nitro tablet which is commonly 0.4 mg. But I don't understand the math as implied on the nitro patch package. If the system contains 44.8 mg of nitro, and it releases for 10 hours (rounded), it would release 4 mg per hour, not .4 mg per hour. Looked at another way, if the patch releases .4 mg/hr, then the system would contain 4.0 mg of nitro, not 40 mg per hour. Either I don't understand what I'm reading, or somebody at Mylan put the decimal point in the wrong place. Comments please?

    • @TheExplosiveGuy
      @TheExplosiveGuy Год назад

      I doubt that is a print error, more than likely the patch has a large excess of nitroglycerin to keep the dosage rate constant throughout the duration of it's use. The adhesive used on the patch is what contains the NG, more than likely it needs the NG to be at a higher concentration to even allow transfer of the medication through it, let alone a constant dosage, once it "dries out" beyond a certain point it's ability to transfer the NG slows down or stops, despite there still being a lot of it still trapped inside. This is just an educated guess, I'm not a medical expert or anything, it just makes sense based on my experiences.

    • @markennes5208
      @markennes5208 Год назад +1

      @@TheExplosiveGuy Thanks, that does make sense. And I like the "dries out" theory. Sometimes I forget to remove it after 12 hours and the patch stays on 24 hours, and then I put another one on. And from what I read, this can create a tolerance problem, where the nitro doesn't work anymore, even if you increase the dosage, until one goes patch free for at least a few hours. However, I've never experienced a tolerance problem. So I agree, it must slow down to a trickle or it stops. Thanks again.

    Actually, the technical term for chest pain is "angina pectoris". "Angina" is what people often call it, even though it's unspecific. You can have different forms of angina, another commonly known being angina tonsillaris, whereas the word itself comes from Latin and means something like strangling.

    One critical thing you've missed to mention: this drug has to be placed under the tongue in order to make it effective. If you swallow it, it will be absorbed via the g.i. tract and go through the liver metabolism and lose its function then.
    Also this drug should not be used as in preventive manner because your body will built tolerance to it under prolonged exposure. It should be used when symptom occur.

Today, chemical labs have elaborate isolation mechanisms to ensure nothing gets into a chemist's or lab technician's body.

    In the medical circles we call it GTN (short for glyceryl trinitrate - only realised it was the same thing after googling it!) and we give it as a spray under the tongue during suspected heart attacks. I wonder how much more or less dangerous the spray is compared to the tablets? 🤔

    • @AzureRaven2

      The tablets are usually kept in pharmacies too, though at least in our particular case, it was a pretty rarely prescribed thing. I assume they take the same procedures to make it safe though. TL;DR: don't try to make it at home.
    When I was in university, three students decided to make some nitroglycerin (NG) in the dorm. It exploded in the process. One of them died, another got severe face burn, became and ultimately didn't recover from mental trauma, third, beside burns lost and eye, hand and 3 fingers on another hand. Dorm's room where they was "cooking" had it's walls slightly shifted/expanded. Whole building and couple neighbour lost all their glass windows.
    Do not try making explosives at home. Besides, being quite illegal, it is extremely dangerous. Those three was excellent students and had bright future in chemistry if not for this decision and consequent accident.

    Nitroglycerin jelly is also prescribed as a topical and intra-anal muscle relaxer for the treatment of hemorrhoids and anal fissures. I can personally confirm that it works like a charm.

    Race car driver and builder Carroll Shelby would pop nitro tablets all the time.
    In his final race at Laguna Seca he clinched the championship by finishing second, then promptly complained to the press that he would have won the damned thing had he not had to slow down to take his heart medications while driving.

    It’a very interesting that a compound that was initially used for bombs is something that people put into their bodies, hoping to relieve pain in one of the most delicate organs. Even though it has been proved to work for countless years, it makes me wonder if it could potentially hurt somebody. If, perhaps, somebody attempted to overdose on pills that contained nitroglycerin, would they die of heart and blood vessel related issues, or would there be even the slightest possibility that the nitroglycerin could combust inside them? Even though the video didn’t speak on that, I would be interested to know the answer.

    Nitroglycerin: it can either be used as an explosive or as a medicine against heart problems.
    Nuclear fusion: it can either be used in bombs which could obliterate entire cities or to generate electricity.
