Magnetic Resonance Imaging, commonly known as MRI, helps doctors find, watch, and treat medical problems. MRI uses very strong magnets, radio waves, and a computer to make pictures of the inside of the body. MRI pictures are more detailed than those made with other methods. There are many reasons to have MRI. MRI may find bleeding, such as bleeding in the brain; brain, changes as in stroke; problems with your back, such as a herniated disk; and an injury inside the body, such as a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Before MRI, you will remove all metal objects. And it's not safe to have MRI with some medical implants. You should tell the MRI technologist about any metal device or implant you may have in your body, such as a pacemaker. To prepare for MRI, you will lie on a table just outside the scanner. MRI scanners are very noisy. So you will probably wear earplugs or headphones. Different equipment, such as pillows and straps, will help you stay in the correct position. Once you're ready, the table will slide into the scanner. Most often, closed scanners, such as this one, are used. The area inside is very narrow. In some areas, open scanners are available. This scanner is open on the sides. So you won't be completely surrounded by the machine. However, the pictures may not be as good as with closed scanners. For either type of scanner, a technologist will operate it from the next room. You will be able to talk to each other through a two-way speaker. During the scan, magnets in the machine will create a strong magnetic field. This will not harm you. Then the scanner will send radio waves through your body. This will not harm you. When the radio waves are turned off, the scanner will pick up energy signals from your body. These signals are used to make the pictures. During the scan, you will have to stay very still, so the images will be clear. You may be asked to hold your breath for a short time. MRIs may take 30 to 45 minutes or longer to complete. In some cases, you may get contrast dye with your MRI. The dye helps make clearer pictures. After the MRI, you can resume your normal activities. If you received contrast dye, the technologist may ask you to drink plenty of water or other healthy drinks to help your kidneys remove the dye from your body.

The human body is composed of 70% water which contains hydrogen. When hydrogen atoms are put in a magnetic field, they arrange in a particular manner. When radio waves are introduced or radiated, the hydrogen atoms disarrange and rearrange once the radio waves stop radiating. The time difference of disarrangement and rearrangement of hydrogen atoms (varies by organs) is processed by a computer to produce an image.

I just had an MRI, do what I have to share is do NOT open your eyes. Close them for 30 mins and just dream or think of whatever you want and stay still. Ask them to put you in for 30 seconds to see how it feels as practice, this is their job and will no problem with doing that. I was so shook and nervous but its not that bad. If you open your eyes and start thinking how you can't move you will start to panic. If you do, they give you a rubber ball to squeeze and they take you out. Just close your eyes and chill because the easier and quicker it is, the faster you get out of there!

You should give as much accurate information to the doctor as possible. For example, bone fusal of the brain, fractures or cracked bones, ear problems, and etc. This will allow the doctor to know that what has happened to the body in order not to be concerned.

    • @Mohammad_Ali__

Dr. Mehmooda Munazir the MRI also gives images of the brain so doctors can analyze what goes on inside the brain through a period of time. This gathering of images occurs when the doctors are behind the monitors and start the processes. An MRI uses a strong magnetic field (which is why no metals should be near or around it nor in the room while the process is taking place. When it is being used, radiation is also being given out, which is why nobody should be inside the room. Not doing so will expose you to radiation. Some images lack quality and accuracy, patients also may receive second degree burns. Here is the best reference I used for SOME of the details I didn’t know: www.fda.gov/radiation-emitting-products/mri-magnetic-resonance-imaging/benefits-and-risks

So. I am a claustrophobic person, but I had my MRI (of my cervical spine) done a week ago. And it wasn't that big of a deal, like yeah when I heard a strange sound first time it was irritating. But after 1 or maybe 2 seconds it was okay for me. My father was asked by the technician to hold my legs(as they were not inside the machine), he told me I was in there with no issues.

I’m probably going to have to get an MRI on my head. I have TERRIBLE anxiety. I had to get a CAT scan once in the ER and even though it is more open and lasted a couple minutes I literally couldn’t breathe. I don’t know how I will survive this.

I think you can ask you doctors to give you some tranquilizer, like diazepam if the procedure is really problematic and stressful for you. However you would need someone to take you home after that, as driving a vechicle after tranquilizers is really bad idea.

Same, the result is the part that makes me so nervous. Luckily the radiologists at my local hospital always discuss the images directly after the MRI with each patient. I’ve been to a different radiologist for my very first MRI where they sent me home right after the scan. But I asked several times to talk to the radiologist (probably annoyed them lol) and eventually got to talk to him about the images.

I'm not claustrophobic; but when you first go in, it's a shock. I've been in some narrow spaces in my life. You need a couple of seconds to adjust to the narrowness. If you need to, ask the tech to take you out for a bit before you commit to the MRI. After the initial adjustment, it's no big deal.
The MRI itself is painless. The only pain you would feel is if you were laying on the table wrong or your ear was folded into the headphones or stabilizing foam. Make sure you're physically comfortable before you start.
The way that I would describe it is that it's like wearing a motorcycle helmet in a a really loud dance club that is also undergoing demolition work. I actually found it pretty relaxing.
You'll be fine. As with most things in life, the anticipation anxiety is the the worst part. I wish you the best health. Take care!

If your claustrophobic, it's going to be quite stressful. There is very little room in there. Most have a button for your hand, that you can press, to have it all shut down, if it's just too much. I found it hot in there.

Hi! Thanks for that cool video. Because of my multiple sclerosis I'm very glad MRI exists. Since I'm not claustrophobic and because of my interest in industrial music I really ejoy the scans. One thing I've missed in the video: These consoles containing magnetic coils put over the body parts of interest during the scan. They were missing in the video. What's theirpurpose? 8)

    • @poppypeppa0186

Matthias Moneke well the coils act as a antenna the Gradient field. The neutrons would just spin around your body, but with the coil the neutrons that align in the magnetic field and go back in their original form by the gradient field are detected. Im very sorry for you God bless you, hope you will live long anyways
