Chocolat is credited as the first auguste clown, and it definitely opens eyes to clown (and just social) history and culture. There are a few short videos of the two clowns and someone pointed out that Chaplin used a routine from them. There's also a movie about them. Sorry to bother you if you already knew.
I'm glad I am a little behind on videos. My wife called me last night when she got home from work, she wouldn't go in the house because the door was open. I went home and checked the house and found that the door had failed to latch. BUT, if I had seen this video I probably would have called the SWAT team. I don't know if we have a SWAT team, I had better find out.
