  • A new chapter in film comparisons, I look at the differences between Kodak Tri-X as our standard and Ilford Ilford Ortho Plus 80. All films in these comparisons were shot using the same lighting and position, developed in Kodak D-76 using the manufacturer’s recommended time, and printed on Ilford Classic FB at 11x14 size using the same contrast settings. The printing time varied to cancel any changes in film base fog from film to film. I included the H&D curves for each film to see the individual differences and we look at the overall print, the spectral response of each film, and the grain characteristics.

I have a male dancer coming to the studio tomorrow. I'm definitely grabbing a few rolls of ortho as well for the portraits at least. Good stuff. Thanks for all of these videos!

Gorgeous film. Love orthochromatic portraits, and landscapes have that eerie look too. Gregory your work is unbelievable, best film photography RUclips channel by far. Thanks for all the work you're putting into this!

for anyone trying Ortho 80, i highly recommend processing in HC-110, dilution 1:63, for 12 minutes (box speed). i made a contact print last night and it looks incredible.

Remarkable detail on the Ilford. I would never have imagined that much difference from the Kodak.

Been enjoying Ortho film for a couple years now. One of my favourites! Looks awesome on 4x5 too. Works well with yellow filter as well.

Amazing separation of tones from this film.

Im suprised to see any grain in a ortho film. Im also starting to consider TriX as a fine grain film. Take that forum triax is so grainy contrasty geeks.

    • @NGC6144
      @NGC6144 Год назад

I've noticed too. Tri-X is extremely fine grain in the mids and highlights that rivals a fine grain ISO 100 film. One does see some typical grain for a 400 film towards the low end. I would suppose it is made with several different emulsion layers. It was grainier decades ago as one would normally expect from a 400 film.

@@NGC6144 It really seems to be, compared to all these slower films.. it always just looks really clean and fine grain. Modern Kodak films are extremely good.

I am very interested in this particular film since I am very interested in classic cameras. Thanks. However I am also interested in Box/Brownie types (i.e. non adjustable) so I am also interested in latitude. Therefore I would be interested in XP2 as well because I have heard that C41 might have more latitude than real B&W film.

    Hi Gregory,
I'm not an Ortho film user, but i would like to see the effects on Ilford Ortho + 80 with filters, Like Yellow, Green in a landscape. Such as the effects on sky and Green foliage.
I'm a Panchromatic Film user and am acquainted with Yellow, Orange, Green, Red and Polarizer filters on that type of film.
Your tests with various films are enlightening but could be broadened to include landscapes. I know that would be a lot of work, and you might say, just go out and try it for your self. But the reason I watch your reviews is to save time on films that are just not what I am looking for. Many thanks for your program 👍

All of these were filmed more than two years ago, so the format will not change now.

@@TheNakedPhotographer Good, Thanks for your film testing series, at least I know what to stay away from. As for Ortho 80 + 🤔
I think that I will stay with Kodak TMAX and D76.
I can't imagine anyone testing forty nine films with variations of Developers and using various filters. You did very well with your efforts. Thanks 👍

Thanks for that comparison. Rollei pronunciation is: ‘rol-eye’, with the ‘r’ sound coming from the back of the mouth.
