Comprehensive and to the point video about growing tomatoes. What I love about your approach is that you focus on the topic, not yourself. This makes you a star! ;-)
Much better to hear your voice than music. Love the way you roll your r's. I've been using NEEM oil for years and it does work...has to be fresh, however. My secret is to spray my tomato plants with 1 (one) dissolved aspirin per gallon of water. Fools the plant into thinking it is being attacked (virally, bacterially, fungus) ergo; the tomato plant gets stronger to defend itself. Tomatoes use a hormone similar to salicylic acid to trigger a response called 'systemic acquired resistance' or SAR. This response helps a tomato plant fight off bacteria, fungi and other diseases. This defense response is a naturally occurring internal plant process that can be started manually (so to speak) by spraying your tomato plants with aspirin. The salicylic acid in the aspirin will trigger the tomato's defenses, by mimicking the natural hormone, as if it were being attacked. You can preemptively trigger the SAR response in tomatoes. Why is this a good thing, to be proactive? The defenses of a tomato are typically triggered when a disease takes hold. Be it bacteria, fungi or a virus, the tomato responds once it is attack. Very often the disease has already taken hold and has spread before the tomato's SAR or defense is triggered and fully utilized. It is often too late by the time the natural response is triggered and in full defensive swing... the tomato is already fully infected. By spraying your tomatoes you can activate your tomatoes systemic acquired resistance response before a threat is present. You set your tomato's defenses on alert and they are looking for a disease. You will visually see the change in the plant. The leaves will become a deeper green and become thicker. Best defense is a good offense...guess that saying also works in the plant kingdom. Further, aspirin is organic and in no way affects the taste of the fruit.
Very Helpful. Pruning was always tricky for me. I have a lot of good tomatoes. But now I know its ok to prune the bottom yellow leaves while the tops branches are thriving !
This was the most comprehensive tomato video that I've ever seen, it answered so many of my questions, even though I've been growing tomatoes for years! It maybe too much information for some but if you're tired of trial and error, like I am, I'm very happy to find a gardening expert that goes into detail and gives me the answers.
however I only have a small garden so I grow tomatoes in hanging baskets but you didn't address this issue please give me some advice on how to get the most of my tomatoes
I would like to add, over here in FL, the sun is very strong so I planted green beans and sweet basil with my tomato in the 16" pot. It looks too crowded but all 3 plants are growing amazing! The basil supposedly makes the flavor of the tomato better (I'm not much of a tomato person but these taste REALLY good. The green beans help put nitrogen back in the soil for the tomato :D Good luck all!!!
Co-planting is definitely a real thing, but the basil/tomato connection is more of an old Italian wive's tale. It is a logical co-plant because tomatoes and basil definitely go together (in sauce, Caprese salads, etc), but don't actually do anything beneficial for the tomato. A true beneficial co-plant for tomatoes is the Marigold. They are natural repellents for nematodes (attack the plant roots), aphids, hornworm moths, and whiteflies. Chives, onions, garlic, and other alliums will also benefit a tomato bed. I use 4x8 raised beds. The tomatoes are planted along the outside edges, and I direct-sow marigolds in the center. I've been doing this for years and I have very minimal pest issues.
Dana Arn basil does add better taste to tomatoes. I started growing them side by side 2 years ago and everyone that tried them say the same, that they are the best they have tried. Other herbs are also good when you plant them right next to each other, inches apart. Happy gardening
Basil + Tomatoes : Yes, you are correct. It's called companion planting. One plant help the other. Basil, Garlic and Marigold are known to help tomatoes. Basil improve flavor and help with the tomato horn worm. Never plant tomatoes next to the whole brassica family (cabbage, broccoli, kale, etc.) or potatoes, they really don't do well together. I planted Brandywine and Beefsteak along with a hefty dose of Genovese Basil and the few select that were granted a share told me that they were the best tomatoes they ever had.
My faves are a repeat of the many lists below. Lacking in the lists, in my opinion, are 2 mahogany-colored tomatoes that I grow every year and are worth mentioning: 1) Japanase Black Trifele (another name is Russian Truffle) - "Bartlett pear-shape with greenish shoulders, extraordinary rich and complex flavor"; slice it in half and study the multiple colors. You guess by now, I eat for beauty and taste (the best of what nature provides). 2) Nyagous - not many people are familiar with this. "N is a very rare black heirloom variety from Russia. The baseball-sized fruits are produced in clusters of 3 to 6. Unlike other black tomatoes, N is less prone to cracking and cat-facing. Very popular at Farmers Markets. N is also a good canner and slicer."
Thank you for the great advice. I've only started container gardening 2 years ago with mixed results. The first year I planted patio tomatoes, Thai chilis, and habaneros. I planted late because I did it on a whim. The yield for the Thai chillis was fair and the tomatoes turned out ok. They were sweeter than store bought which made me want to try again. The second year the chillis did so well that I didn't have to plant them this year the yield was so high. The tomatoes not so much. I screwed up with the choice of soil - drainage was poor, and the soils was so dense there was no root structure when I pulled the plants up. This year I used a soil formulated for veggies and I have huge tomato plants with a ton of fruit and blossoms. I'm using Purely Natural 8-8-8 fertilizer which only needs to be added to the soil every 6 weeks and am using Serenade anti-fungal biological spray every 7 days. No hazardous chemical sprays. I really appreciated the advice on pruning since I was reluctant to prune the plants since I am new to this endeavor. Also you confirmed my decision on the size of my containers. I chose containers big enough to acomodate 4 patio tomato plants for 16 total. I am using very large rubber maid totes that we had left over from storage. Each one holds over 3 cubic feet of soil. Oh, btw, I have recruited a swarm of neighborhood bees and humming birds to pollinate my plants by planting bee balm and garlic chives. The bees love the chive flowers. Cut worms can't reach the plants because of the smooth plastic containers. I planted early for Maine (2nd week of May) and am expecting to harvest in about a week and a half. Again I really appreciate your advice and insight.
what a no nonsense video!! loved it! For the first time I m growing tomatoes following the instructions.. fingers crossed !! 😁 You have got great presentation skills.
Excellent!!! Clear, concise, well-organized. Lovely props. Camera shots show clearly what you are explaining. You are a great teacher! Thank you for a delightful review for this old gardener who is still striving for the best tomatoes.
This is a great video! I've been growing tomatoes for over 20 years, thought I was doing pretty well but this video has taught me a few things and reinforced a few I'd forgotten. Very nice job!! Thank you for making it.
My wife and I started our 1st garden for the summer and we love watching all of your videos. our first tomatoes are just starting to ripe and we taste tested one but it was very mealy and kind of tasteless. Now the June gloom is over and its getting warmer we are hoping that may help with the flavor. We grow in containers, and any advice you may have would be awesome! thank you again for your time in putting these together
you did a wonderful job at explaining most of the tomato growing procedures, tips & tricks. The one that jumped out to me, as I am an avid tomato grower myself, is that you DID NOT explain to the novice what/where the suckers are located and when you plant the suckers to water very well and often for a couple weeks to get the root system started. Thank you as I did enjoy your video. Linda
I was a total newcomer when I saw part 1 , totally in awe of your loaded tomato plants , as I was growing foliage for 2 years haha !! Part 2 is a pleasure to watch , complete guide , wonderful !!
My husband decided to grow tomatoes. What a mess ! They are all over the place. I have been looking at so many videos trying to figure out how to fix this mess. Then ---- I found your video. What a wonderful video. Full of easy to understand instructions. And, also very concise. Thank You ! I will be looking at your other videos too. Now all I have to do, is figure out what to do with all of the many, many vines of these tomatoes. Again, the absolute best tomato video that I have seen !
I'm only 10 seconds in, and already I know I'm going to love your video! Could listen to that voice all day long, sounds like music, with a no-nonsense message.
So excited that it's finally getting close to time to get the peppers and tomatoes outside. Now, if only pork chops and steak would grow in the garden, I'd quit my job.
Thank you 😊 I wrote down all the tomatoes that you mentioned. I will plant these next year. I have some in the garden. But I liked how you explained each and variety. 👍♥️ God bless you and your family 🙏🤗 Blessings to you 🙏
California Gardening: TREMENDOUS VIDEO‼️👍🏽 How many hours of sunlight per day do most tomato 🍅 plants require each day? It looks like you have some interesting watering techniques and devices. Could you please tell me where & how you use them? Can they be bought at any gardening store? I thoroughly enjoy your videos and the time and effort you've put into producing them to share with all of us. You clearly have a lot knowledge- skills - and a great enthusiast attitude for growing tomatoes the proper way. Can the soil you make up for tomatoes work equally well for growing most other vegetables? Finally, if one were to plant a 10" tomato plant, about how long before it will begin yielding ripe tomatoes? Thanks in advance for any help and/or advice you may have to share on the questions I've asked. William ~
I HEAVY AGREE WITH YOU! Not only Tomato's but Pepper plants as well > Pepper plants a must to leave the double leaves, trim off the single leaves! Both are easy to clone big sucker on tomato's, and any branches on Peppers that break off, or trim off, on peppers
Thank you so much. I really learned a lot and it's my 1st-time growing tomatoes in containers, I hope I can have a good harvest with the help of your video.
Fabulous! Wonderful to receive tips from a "pro"; one with dirt under his nails. I've been growing toms since1975 here in the N.E. (Gatineau Quebec). Your first hand experience is evident and much appreciated. We're always learning.Have a great growing season !
Your tomatoes look beautiful! Here in Arizona I have hard time growing the tomatoes to size because of the heat,,, I use huge containers and you are right, the container has to be big enough. Thank you for your video!!!
Old School Home & Garden with Sasha you probably won’t see this recommendation, but there are a few tomato varieties that thrive in heat. They are wild tomatoes, very tiny but prolific. There are a couple that originate in Mexico and one from Florida called Everglades tomato.I live in Florida so will be trying that one, but for you the Mexican varieties sound perfect.
We have to be careful of a late/early season freeze in my area of PA....plus chilly summer nights don't help! I never thought about it being too hot for tomatoes some places.... this has been a really informative video in multiple ways. :) Happy growing, everyone!
Amazing video. Very very informative. I watched your earlier video few years ago when ai started growing tomatoes in small patio in containers. I am learning each year. This year seems to be the best one yet. Keep making videos. Spreading knowledge. Thank you very much. Your garden looks amazing bdw.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I'm a beginning grower (who has killed more plants than grown). I'm living in Italy in a small farming village. Yes, I'm surrounded by farmers, I should ask them, how to grow things, right? In time, yes, I will. But for now, I'm enjoying learning from your videos. Because of your help, I've got thriving Basil, Cherry Tomato, and Mint plants on our balcony. Thank you again for posting. I've learned a lot.
Great video as usual! I did want to make a note about why it's so important to use neem oil in the evening - the main reason for this is that it breaks down very quickly in UV light and won't be effective if it is exposed to sunlight.
I realise that you made this video a few years ago, but I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your really helpful and clear advice on growing tomatoes. This is a very useful and practical video and I am delighted to have found it. I have subscribed to your channel and I am charging up my electric toothbrush to help with pollinating my tomatoes! Best Wishes and Thank you so much.
I appreciate that you are straight to the point! I’m a beginner gardener! Also you don’t talk about a lot of expensive amendments! I’m from Lubbock, TX and will try out!
Highly informative. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Do you have any good recommendations for plants that I can grow on my patio? I don't have a backyard. Right now I'm growing patio tomatoes and green chilies.
Wow! Glad I found your site. I am about to start my little urban garden and been looking for tips on planting and caring for tomatoes and pepper specifically. Thanks for sharing your expertise! This is very informational and comprehensive. Will definitely watch your other videos. Keep up the good work!
Seriously informative, well structured and comprehensive. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your expertise! I never would have thought of the hand pollination, for example.
Great video with alot of good information for a beginning gardner... is it best to alternate the fertilizing methods between the Organic Tomato Fertilizer and Epson Salt? How far apart can you apply them?
Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. I love your videos, straight to the point, no unnecessary comments that waste our time. I have learned so much by just watching this video. Keep up the good work.
I am preparing myself and learning when i retire i know i will have time to grow all my vegetables and fruits in the garden, i am taking note of your site. Now i know that different sizes does matter in growing plants. You are a great teacher and i sure am learning lots from you. I have found is very interesting your video. Now i am going to learn how to grow okra which is also my favourite vegetable and i am going into your video . Thanks and very much appreciated L H Tan
An old gardener gave me this tip..when you now your lawn take some of the grass and put it in the hole first then cover with soil etc and plant your tomato plant..he said ..the grass cuttings mulch down and naturally feed the plant.. hope this someone also a little sharp sand in any mix helps retain moisture.. but I learnt today which is why I subscribed was you can plant the leaf stalk .. I had no idea about that Ty.. I normally buy a tomato I like the taste of and dry out in the sun and use the seeds that way ..Ty.
your videos are an inspiration and the patience you put in amking them is worth appreciations. my dream now is to make a productive garden as yours. i would like to ask a question if you dont mind. how much area are you using to grow all the fruits and vegetables you show in your videos. thanks in advance.
My raised beds are 128 sq feet (8 beds each 4x4 feet) and about 8 containers, some fruit trees. See my last months video to get an idea about the growing space: ruclips.net/video/3MetXX9SkWs/видео.html
Parimal Maru don't worry about "bothering others"! it can help others out with issues we didn't know were issues or provide us with tips & tricks, etc!! I always read the comments to see what others are asking or commenting on for this very reason!!! Ask away is my opinion...js!
For leaf curl mix water with really sour yoghurt and put in copper jug or something and put neem oil or neem leaf and leave for three days and spray for week it will cure leaf curl
Please can you make a video on how to grow more fruit trees that will be helpful if you do so and I love your work you do for us you are an inspiration for me keep making such videos
What a great video. All about the plants / techniques and not the gardener. As a novice veggie gardener I shall be monitoring your videos as I find them so easy to understand (even tho I'm in the UK !). Thank you
Thanks! My aim is to create instructional video with a lot of gardening footage and the least distractions. Glad to know you liked it. Happy Gardening!
Oh I loved this video, the structure seems like a professional video for domestic kitchen gardening, made into detailed divisions/steps covering from the seedling stage to yield, including the pesticides, tips as well.
aswell plant some sunflowers (pre-grown) and other oily seeds that are contained in high quality bird food. Plant in a "corner" of your garden just for the birds, bees and butterflies. Give something back to the wildlife. Rhey need it.
I completely agree that you did an excellent job on this tutorial. The index at the start, clear concise description, clean crisp video images chosen well of your subject and camera not shaky. Love how you stay on topic by not branching off into related areas like the rodent point.
Great video, I'm going to go start removing the "sucker" growths right now. Can the suckers that have already gotten quite large be used to start a new plant as well??
If you have a smart phone like iPhone (with Siri) or Goole phone, you can just ask and it will convert anything for you. I use it a lot for cooking recipes because ounces, quarts and cups as measurements mean nothing to me :) I just ask Siri "convert 50 ounces to grams" and she does it :)

Thanks Sasha, of course, but not just for me. Just one day and 2000+ views. This is not daily information. It will increase for years and years. It's worth to effort. also important to watch the video without interrupt.
You are right about that :) That's why I love my grandmother's measuring system so much - "a hand full", "a pinch", "to taste", "a generous amount"... So universal :)))
I put in my 1st garden this year to see what grows best in my location. I planted Eggplant, Mild Jalapenos, Habanero's, ghost chili, cucumbers, green beans, tomatoes (4 kinds), tomatillos, Bell peppers (green and purple)2 types of corn and yellow squash. I've been having trouble with some of my tomato plants (early girl). This video gave me some great ideas to use next growing season (I'm in Colorado). I hope to get bigger tomatoes next year after watching this.My yield is good, but all small fruit, even the beefsteak is small (6-8oz max). I'm guessing I need to work on keeping them feed properly as i've only fed them a couple time this year thinking that all the great soil I used would compensate. I was unaware it can take so long for some fertilizers to actully feed the plants. So another thank you for that information. Next Part 2. Thanks again.. R.S... :)
hi. Here in india we donot get ready to use fertilizers for each and every plant. is it possible for u to make a video about generic requirement of fertilizers for any plant. am a beginner in gardening. i really learn a lot from your videoes. thanks.
Thanks! All plants need Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium. Any fertilizer that contains these will be good. In India I remember a fertilizer called "suphala" which is good. Even cow manure is a great fertilizer. Good luck!

Now the June gloom is over and its getting warmer we are hoping that may help with the flavor. We grow in containers, and any advice you may have would be awesome! thank you again for your time in putting these together
That's a lot of tomato growing tips mate! Well done and I concur with them all! Cheers :)
G’day Mark! 😊
Very useful videos
This is like a marvel Cameo but like in the gardening world😂😂😂
i watch all of your videos :)

you did a wonderful job at explaining most of the tomato growing procedures, tips & tricks.

Sir, I have no words , how to express my appreciation for your so useful information,
I am , urban grower too
Thank you! Happy Gardening!

Xiaomei Wan please update the results
very insightful. The best video for a beginner gardener. Thank you for your time
Excellent video! As a Beginner, I'm already planning for next year, based on the mistakes I made this year.
Practical and helpful. Thanks from NZ.
U are a very smart man . Thanks for a well explained video
Happy growing, everyone!
Chris F believe it or not, I just got a notification for your reply 😁 thank you for the information, I appreciate it 😊
Great job. I'm an amateur gardener and your videos are so useful and informative.
Thanks CG! Very informative video. I will try propagate using the cutting. This technique is very new for me. Great Video
Great video as usual! I did want to make a note about why it's so important to use neem oil in the evening - the main reason for this is that it breaks down very quickly in UV light and won't be effective if it is exposed to sunlight.
Beautiful accent. I listen to you all the time. Very relaxing and informative. Thank you.
Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated. Happy gardening!
I'm sure he's an Indian !
clearly Indian Accent
No, obviously Irish or Scot. ;0)
He is from SriLanka
I’ll be trying your tips this growing season. Very kind of you to share your knowledge.
well done good teacher thanks
I realise that you made this video a few years ago, but I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your really helpful and clear advice on growing tomatoes. This is a very useful and practical video and I am delighted to have found it. I have subscribed to your channel and I am charging up my electric toothbrush to help with pollinating my tomatoes! Best Wishes and Thank you so much.
Great information - I especially like your info on optional staking methods! Thanks for the video!
Wow that was a great detailed video. Thanks!
Thank you! Happy Tomato Growing season!
Absolutely FANTASTIC! I'll be back to watch this again and again! Thanks and God Bless!!!
this my first time watching your video,,i do love it as a first time gardener, so educative. thank you
Seriously informative, well structured and comprehensive.
Yes add organic fertilizer every month or so and Epsom salt every month as well, spacing them 2 weeks apart.
Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. I love your videos, straight to the point, no unnecessary comments that waste our time. I have learned so much by just watching this video. Keep up the good work.
yea i find pruning my tomato plant do produce larger fruit!
Wow that was awesome . This video is 3 years old and the best one out there . Thanks for the info . Glad it popped up .
I love your videos. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge. You are a huge inspiration for many of us. Big like.
Thank you! Happy Gardening!
Very informative, Thanks.
California Gardening thanks bro. how can i be in touch with you in 1-1 basis by not disturbing others with my questuons or queriers.
Parimal Maru don't worry about "bothering others"! it can help others out with issues we didn't know were issues or provide us with tips & tricks, etc!! I always read the comments to see what others are asking or commenting on for this very reason!!! Ask away is my opinion...js!
Excellent videos. Concise, helpful, specific and enjoyable. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I love your accent. I wish I knew 2 languages.
Probably the best video on growing tomatoes I have seen. Great job. Thanks!
Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated!
For leaf curl mix water with really sour yoghurt and put in copper jug or something and put neem oil or neem leaf and leave for three days and spray for week it will cure leaf curl
What a valuable lesson from this video. Thank you for your thorough and simple instructions!
Happy Gardening!
great video. I always learn so much from your video as its alway full of helpful tips. Thank you.
Oh I loved this video, the structure seems like a professional video for domestic kitchen gardening, made into detailed divisions/steps covering from the seedling stage to yield, including the pesticides, tips as well.
Best instuction i ever seen👍
Glad you liked it, Happy Gardening!
My heirloom cherry tomatoes have begun to grow now so this video has come absolutely at the right time for me. Thanks :)
tomato are my favorite, it's a very useful video. subscribed (y)
I’m not a novice gardner but your video is EXCELLENT! Packed with wonderful tips and information. Thank you!!!
Very informative. Thanks! Have you tried planting your tomatoes horizontally? I have read that th this allows roots to form along the entire stem.

again a greatly detailed video. I do remember your old video, this is far more informative than before.
his indian accent is so thick i love it!

Alicia cyriac 😊😊😊
Did you really give it some
I was just looking for a tomato growing video and here it is! Thank you CG! 👍
Taman inspirasi
Thankyou very much for a great video lots of helpful information
growing tomatoes this year!! thanks for the tips!!
One of my favorite garden websites!!
Thank you!!!
share some tomatoes with the birds and make them happy. ☺
I planted some wild strawberries just for the birds. They choosen it over all other fruit.
aswell plant some sunflowers (pre-grown) and other oily seeds that are contained in high quality bird food.
Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated!
Great video, I'm going to go start removing the "sucker" growths right now. Can the suckers that have already gotten quite large be used to start a new plant as well??
Yes they can be!
.
👍
Thank you very much for answering my question! I'm going to give it a try.
Absolutely. You can plant directly into a pot, or keep them in a vase of water for a week to let the root hairs get established first.
Thus far this vid is the best and Most descriptive I've seen for Tomatoes. Thank you Very Much !!!
I though we had the best tomatoes in Italy but I see how good crop is your
Omg I'm watching the video again and writing down notes. So informative. Thank you. Blessings 💫
do u feed your tomato epson salts both when in veg and bloom? if so for both is it once every 3 weeks and 1 tbsp per gal at both life stages?
Epsom salt is most needed during bloming time till harvest is completed
thank you - think this has been the best video on tomatoes I have come across
Thanks for informative video. Could you please give us metric measurments also.
Thanks Sasha,
of course, but not just for me.
Just mutiply by 2.2 so one inch is 2.2 cm or 22 mm and weight is the same
1 inch is 25.4mm
Good luck!
Learned a lot as an "intermediate" level tomato grower. Like your style
So 16 inch wide container 3 inches deep should be cool. What are the gallon size on your containers in agriculture we go by the gallons
OK and I get the vibrating toothbrush imitating a Bee but are you letting the pollen just fall?
He mentioned minimum size 7-8 gallons
Best tomato growing video ever!
Ppppp
Do you grow ayurvedic herbs??
I love your videos. I learn something new all the time and I have been gardening for over fifty years.
