I was adopted on my 29th birthday by my foster mother, who I didn't live with until I was 16. At that time, I just wasn't ready to be adopted as it felt like a betrayal to my birth mother. I'm so glad adult adoption is allowed; it really makes a difference.

I adopted my son when I was 51 and he was 19 in California; that was five years ago. The laws are different in California because my son--as an adult--could consent to the adoption and I did NOT need any consent from the birth-parents. He lived with my wife and me for 6 months and we developed a de-facto parent-child relationship. It was a unique adoption in that only I adopted him (not my wife, although she had to consent) allowing me to replace his non-existent "sperm-donor" father who had never had a role in my son's life; on the birth-certificate, but we left the birth-mom on the birth certificate. I have met her and she accepts me as her son's father and my wife as his step-mom. Unusual adoption? Yes! But, it was one of the best decisions we have ever made and my wife and I love our son as much as our natural children and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

My college professor and his wife want to adopt me as their daughter. Im 29 and I was with them everyday for 2 years helping them dog sitting for them they even gave me a key for their house. My dad was very abusive to me and kept me a prisoner in the house for 24 years. He put garbage bags on all the windows and said take them off and I will kill you. He didnt want me around my professor because he was jealous when he was alive. Because my professor actually had a father daughter relationship with me. My dad is a convicted felon he murdered a man in cold blood and I majored in criminal justice. My professor is a retired cop and now a retired professor. I always wanted a dad who loves me. How long does the process take. They will both be on the new birth certificate. I asked my mom and she is so happy I have them. I told her just because a piece of paper has made them my mom and dad. You will always be my mother. I just have 2 moms and finally a dad who loves me. They are in south Carolina. I would have to move 8 hours away but next year I will go see them for around 3 weeks. Mom said she wants me to be happy and to start my life.

Dear Lucrece, Just saw your video on adult adoption. Here is my story. I am currently a retired widower in my mid 60s living in the Bronx NY. Eight years ago I met Kathy, a 19 year-old girl from the Dominican Republic where I worked at a factory in Yonkers. The story Kathy told me one day was that her real father had left her mother for another woman when Kathy was 3 years old. Since my wife was barren, I began calling Kathy "Daughter", and she loved it. I met Kathy's mom shortly after and she was thrilled with the idea of me being Kathy's "dad". Kathy has since found her real father but there is no bond between them as he has chosen to live in Colorado with his second wife and children. Last year my wife passed away due to Covid. I lost track of Kathy after she got married, and for 3 years did not hear from her. But on the day of the 1st anniversary of my wife's passing in April 2021, Kathy somehow got a hold of my cellphone number and contacted me. She had just found out that my wife had passed and we both cried over the phone. She begged me to come back into her life and after we spoke for several hours, we arranged to meet. I finally saw Kathy again. She lives in my neighborhood, just 10 minutes away and now I visit her several times a week. I still love her as a daughter and she loves me as though I were her real dad. Lucrece, is there a way for me to adopt Kathy. I am the only one of my brothers and sister who does not have children and I would like for Kathy to be my legally adopted daughter. How do I do it? I would deeply appreciate your help.

    Hi Lucrece,
I am an adult with an age that has exceeded 21 years, who was unofficially adopted from birth.
I use the term unofficially because no paper work was completed by my parents, who didn't understand at the time that that was necessary. I must point out I am from another country.
My biological mother met my adoptive father while she was pregnant with me, and they both agreed that they would parent me together. I am registered in his name, so I have had his surname from birth.
He has actually been my father from birth until now.
My father is a citizen of the usa and wants to petition for me. He is currently married to my mother but she is living here in my home country.
Will it be possible for him to petition for me considering he did not complete the adoption process from I was a child?
Can he proceed with an adult adoption process in this case?
    Please advise.
    Thank you.

I want to adopt an adult who is 27 years old and I met him through a day support where I am employed and he is in a sponsor home. He sadly says that he is too old to be adopted and I believe he has his human rights to have a choice to choose someone who has a positive relationship with him and wants to be adopted by me and my spouse. Is this impossible when all he wants is a real home with a real family to call his own, even if he is over 18 and living in a sponsored home?
I live in Virginia where adult adoption is legal but I’m not familiar with all details of this process and he does have a guardian and I’m not sure if it is a state appointed guardian or distant family.

I was adopted by my abuser when I was 9 years old. I finally got away from my abuser when I 15. My ausber moved out of country, I stayed with the family who adopted my brothers. I have always considered them as my parents sense. I am an adult now I like in Kansas. I do not have proof of the abandonment, I also do not have any documentation of my abuser getting her parental rights taken. I have been looking into the adoption as an adult by the family who took care of me.
I dont know where to start? What forms I need to fill out and file with he courts? Or if this is even a possibility at all.

I have a single friend who is an American citizen in her 60’s and has been living in Rwanda for close to thirty years. When the child in question was less than a year old both of her parents were killed and the child was brought to my friend a little over 20 years ago and has been living with her ever since. My friend has tried to adopt the child in Rwanda but since the child had one grandparent, though had no contact or support in anyway by the grandparent, was not able to adopt in Rwanda.
My friend is getting close to retirement age and wants to return to the US for good but wants to adopt this 20 year old young lady to bring her also.
She has talked to a couple of lawyers here in the states, one was a lawyer who specialized in adoption but to no avail. All she has received from them are bills for their time but no answers.
Do you know what she needs to do?

She had nowhere else to go so my husband and I let her move in....her mother was very mean to her. Her brother who lived with her mother still and a few years before he had beaten her up. Her eyes swelled shut her lips were busted. Her mother told her if she told on her brother her mother would throw her out also. When we went to her mother's house to get all her things her mother cussed her so bad and her brother did also. My husband and I were moving her so I had to get between her and her brother several times to keep him from hitting her. She has been with us 7 years now. She takes care of us. She cooks cleans does laundry etc. We want her to be our legal daughter so she can care and make decisions for us in our old age and to inherit all our property and belongs. How do we do this? She calls me Mom and my husband Dad. We tell everyone she is our daughter. We pay her doctor bills and we support her.

You need to consult an adoption attorney that specializes in international adoption laws so he can provide you better options. Because she is an adult she would have to be family by blood or cousin or relative to sponsor her. However, an experienced international adoption attorney might be able to help you find a way.
