Excellent video. I'm going to make two--One for a neighbor friend and the other for myself. I have a box full of Marine Radios. Living in a remote part of Vermont with no cell signal, we both have disabilities and live alone, about a mile from each other. So the radios will be an emergency backup if there is trouble. Thank you for making the video.
The Marine band shouldn't really be used for general chitchat but as you say you live in a remote part and only a few miles apart then using this 1/4 wave on "low power" on an agreed channel you are very unlikely to be interfering with anybody,
Nice video :) I like that marine band radio at the beginning :) I made a groundplane using aluminum arrowshafts after seeing a video. It works really good on the CB, VHF Air and Marine band, as well as picking up the local Sheriff's office, Fire/Rescue VHF High and Low band comms around here in Amelia, Virginia (USA) Grid Square - FM17ai Took it down with me to the Outer Banks in North Carolina, last summer and I was picking up the boaters and the aviation band like crazy. Nice one sir.people please let him build how he wants to he don't want people saying do it this way or that way .iv used Epoxy the same way even when I solder the PL259 the Epoxy fills up the PL259 RG 213 plug fills it seals it and it will never move or let water in the Epoxy drys like stone if left for about three days I do use heat shrink just to look neat and tidy.this man even unpicks braid like I do I use a long pin nail with a filed point bit like the wire he used.any way nice mood my friend. I'm just making a discone Antenna part way threw it on my Lathe that's the main part of the discone .well done sir.ps I use Epoxy all the time the one under £3 on eBay or Amazon

Good presentation, but why not use a straight through pl259 instead of the socket chassis mount, saves having to solder cable onto bottom and then have to go to the bother of trying to waterproof the open end of the cable.. Just screw pl259 onto cable and screw to bottom end of straight through pl259.
Hi, I need to replace the antenna on my sailboat. Would this design work fixed to the top of my mast? Would it be able to transmit as well as receive? Thanks

Hi There. Yep like the design and I will make one. The only thing I have found with my own aerials is Araldite long terms absorbs water and the swr goes bad. If you check with the manufacturer or read the instructions it says not suitable for constant water exposure. I use a two part Glass fibre based car epoxy instead. So just check label on epoxy or speak to Ciba Geigi or any other Expoxy manufactureres otherwise months later when aerial is up in air on roof its a pain to get down again.
Thanks for info, I can only speek of my own experience with Araldite used for many years on boat aerials and 2 mts/70cems pluss mobile on car again for many years and found nothing better , checks were made for impedance L/C swr as to delectrick compatabillity useing Autec Research RF Analyer with great results ! can I advice that may be down to the prior heating as vid makes the surface like "glass" I am positive this is innert and therefor impervious to water. not wishing to labour the point, car epoxy is still two part resin with a bulking agent such as talc ! a good test as to wether water is absorbed or not, is to put some in the microwave ... temperature befor and after etc
26".7"= 1/4 wave 66".8" = 5/8 wave etc therefor 106".8" for a full wave but why you would want a full wave beats me ? if you were using a vertical aganst ground half wave would be is 63".4"

Not true!,their is no reason not to have a home set up to listen to marine traffic / weather forecasts / safety info / yacht club activates admin etc repair shops / marinaras / lockgates geppers / ,the list go`s on and on,you would be in brech of of offcom licence if you purported to be a vessel while being land based that is a differant mater !
***** You need a receiver to listen to marine traffic not a transceiver. Anyway I am an electrical engineer with a workshop for marine radios. My workshop is land based. We try to get a test channel for marine radios. I have a private arrangement with the coast guard. They answer my test calls when I have repaired a radio and make a performance test. Marine radio is not a land based service and by law you are not allowed to have a Marine station on land.
My reply said " listen to" , I too am a qualified radio engineer ,the aerial being reciprocal is thefor equally sutable for rx/tx as I`m sure you are aware,not wishing to splithairs but marinas are landbased and I can site many others, also as for your "private arrangment" for test calls is something a true pro would have no need for !,the coast guard are NOT qualified engineers most would be unable to give a meaningful report on deviation/freq-parameters etc, you only have to listen to their response to "this is ****** radio check please" ........enough said !

There is no law stating that you can’t have a marine radio transceiver just to monitor with at home or land based or car mobile. Now if you transmit from your car or home that’s a different story. That’s a big no no. Just my two cents worth. Awesome build on the antenna by the way.
My only problem was how to connect the coaxial cable to the antenna. The copper braid attached to a lug is quite clear and it fits on one of the nut andd boltsI am not sure hoew we fit the the cetre coil of the coaxiak cable to the Chassis socket/plug. This is not shown in the Video. Thanks for contacting me.
the center conductor is solded to the center conection , (on the socket)it is shone in vid ,connection is made when you plug in the vertical element in to this . in other words the grownplanes go to the brade and the center go`s to the upright rod it is that simple !
Great idea but looking at it you should flip the so239 over and solder the driven element on that stem so you can use the end you have to connect the cable. Thanks for sharing

Good video. I used one of those tooth whitening syringes to suck up the araldite then gently squirted it into the plug
Excellent antenna. I would suggest using a So-239 female to female panel mount. So that you can attach the Coax using a PL-259

this will work on a sailboat, i used it on my pontoon boat and wrapped the connector with tape to water proof or can use silicone.

you can use the back of the cap to peirce the tubes , do you have any idea how to make a full wave antenna for 103 MHZ ?

great aerial I would think that flipping the connector upside down would give you the connection needed with the driver soldered into the pin that way
I think you will find it would make for a "week" arrangement not something I would recommend

Araldite is fantastic stuff. Better than all it's competitors.
Araldite as explained has excellent RF qualities, I use it on all coax sealing, found nothing better
