Looking back it's interesting how many different niches and characterizations he's gone through, from being one of the background kids with a flip-off gimmick, to sorta being Stan's rival for a while, then reimagined as a sardonic character poking holes in the plot, to changing again when he was paired with Tweek.
the hype was because he was such a pointless and stupid character that they implemented, that everyone actually loved him. trey and matt were hoping that towlie would only be there for his premier episode, but then everyone literally loved him, and now they've got an entire section in their shop dedicated to nothing but towlie merch. it was kind of like the opposite of pip. they implemented pip as the first version of what would be butters, hoping people would enjoy having someone else that the kids could rip on, however, they realized he was literally just a punching bag with o substance other than the fact that he was british. then, his very own episode, modeled after dickens' great expectations came out, and it was almost set and stone that they wanted pip dead or gone for good. in south park: the stick of truth, there was a removed throwable item that was pip's skull. if you remember, in episode 200 or 201, pip literally gets crushed by mechs streisand. everyone was raving about it. i remember my mom saying that before that episode was pulled off the air, when she watched it, she screamed like someone during an NFL match, because pip was just unbearable.
I had a feeling why Clyde’s in the b-plot of crippled summer, the b-plot is like the china probrem, emotional like clyde and he is the emotional support kid in those b-plots
i found your channel thru Bojack videos. those are great because there's a strong thruline for every character in a show where characters matter. interesting and a touch of "wow i didn't think of that about them." i've been watching south park since 1998. this is dumb LUV YA

I feel like towley gets unfair hate, like hes definitely not a "gets his own episode" character because they did NOT do a super job making those interesting but i feel he's a great side character much like Mr Hankey, Bug Gay Al, etc. i absolutely enjoyed seeing him back in the show through, id also love to hear an update on washcloth and is life in general.
Towelie made me change the way I smoke. I use to be like towelie, thinking it would be better if I smoked before. It wasn’t good because sometimes I would be too high to function. So now I don’t do that and now I smoke after I’m done doing stuff. I think it’s helped me quite a bit tbh
