  • I’ve been going to the studio a lot lately, and it’s definitely ups and downs. This week I really captured the downs, which hopefully I’ll be glad I caught on video because there won’t be any more of that (right??). Anyways, enjoy my ceramics fails. Also, I went to the workout class again this week and I’m extremely sore.

Try bracing your elbow on your hip! Your hand needs to be absolutely steady. As soon as I started digging my elbow into my hip the clay was forced to yield. From this video it looks like the clay is pushing your hand instead of the other way around. Also that soup and food you showed after the throwing looked AMAZING. Made me hungry!!

Thank you! I try to keep that in mind but you're right - the clay is definitely pushing me around and not vice versa :P

When I first began ceramics I was, like you, deep into the learning curve. I thought about it constantly. I'd get up to be at the studio at 5am and the go to work and then later often go back at night. I think that is how we all learn. BTW. I just changed how I trim. I bought a fiberglass bat from the potter Hsinchuen Lin--who you probably know. The bat never warps and I can place somewhat delicate pieces on it and not worry about picking the piece up off the bat--instead just flipping the bat over once I remove from the wheel head. Also bought his aluminum bat with inserts and that too I really like. Looking forward to seeing more of your work...

Omg super late reply but THANK YOU for this thoughtful comment and for sharing your experience! I've been traveling a ton lately and thus studio time has gone down, but I can't wait to get back in!

I loved this video! I didn't know about your channel until this morning and you celebrating your small wins made me so emotional! My progress with pottery has been reeeeeaaally slow and I was having a rough time accepting that I'm not good at it YET. Also, you made me remember that I used to love the gym and it really helped me when navigating loss. Although it's not easy and we cannot count on motivation to keep getting better at the things we love, being kinder to ourselves when times are hard really helps with the process.
You are doing absolutely great, Van. Thanks for sharing a piece of your life with us ❤

Omg thank you for this lovely comment!! Completely understand slow progress with pottery (as you can see) BUT seeing inspiration of things I want to make just makes me want to improve more haha. Also, I am light years away from loving the gym 🥲 happy that you've felt that way about working out, even if it wasn't in the most ideal of circumstances.

i still struggle with centering pieces to trim also 🥲 i cheat a little by making a mark on the bottom while it spins and then i see where i need to position the piece

Haha yes! I do that too sometimes - it's just a whole process...
