I got a snippet of how the devs justify the standard on modding and "cheats":
"We do not consider [advantageous mods] cheats, and this is why:
Most of these mods are used in conjunction with other mods, like lowering the cost of resupply but increasing the enemy cap. The intent is usually not to make the game easier but to provide options for a different experience.
Making the game moderately easier is a very inefficient way to boost your progression; you still have to go through the mission loop. Improving your win percentage is not comparable to spawning millions of gold in a mission.
Some of these mods improve accessibility, such as increasing visibility. And yes, you could technically get an advantage with these mods. But the same reasoning applies. It is not a very efficient way of boosting your progression.
If you use these mods to get an advantage in missions, you are more likely to be bored as you make the game easier than intended. We have spent a lot of time tweaking the game to be as engaging as possible."
Edit: of course this doesn't excuse all of them, but gives insight in their reasoning on this topic.

Not only does this explain the Dev's thought process? It's important for people to understand that Cheating progression in DRG is very simple to do without resorting to mods, and it's not as if someone can stop a Cheater from joining a Vanilla game and spamming rapid fire nukes to down the whole team.
We consider these bad faith actors a negligible part of the discussion to whether anti-cheat is necessary (not that it's likely or possible to implement anyway), and Mods fit within the same scope in regards to bad faith actors also being a negligible part of the discussion IMO.

@@electricheisenberg5723 Fair, but those people have three options available to them currently:
      1. Don't join approved-modded lobbies (or lobbies which are using mods you find objectionable; it lists them, after all)
      2. Leave the server if you see its using cheats in some way
      3. Backup your saves periodically, and restore them if you end up failing to do either of the prior (maybe the cheat only occurs at mission end, I dunno)
Given these are all available, I thinks its just not reasonable or fair to disallow mods for the many who want them, even if they blatantly bypass progression (such as the Swarm Control mod). Especially since, at the end of the day, the progression icon is just that; an icon. I've seen plats play awfully, and coppers play like gods, and as long as everyone's having fun who cares?
That being said, I think the category definitions need to be made much more explicit and concrete (specifically where XP falls in the categorization, and what qualifies as accessibility)
Edit: quick clarification on point 1

The criteria is only used when mods are automatically tagged by the mod site bot, once a human (dev) look at them, they can alter the category of said mods as they see fit.
I guarantee you that Haz 6/Starship Trooper mods were sandbox when first released, because they altered the payout/mission strectures...etc BUT once a dev actually tried the mods and actually looked at what they do, they decided the category to which they're best fit (approved).

My take is that at the end of the day it's a PvE game and as long as you're not ruining other people's experience you're good to play the game the way you wanna play it.
I can agree that mod classifications are a bit weird and I don't agree with the placement of some mods in verified vs approved vs sandbox. By 'abusing' the mods mentioned all that people are gaining are meaningless numbers in credits and levels - I know that some people use these as signs of pride but that's about all they are for as promotions don't mean much after your first on each class. If people want to cheat, they're gonna cheat - simple as that. Limiting the official means of doing so through modding isn't gonna stop those people.
We already have a problem where a majority of players will not even look at a modded server. You're lucky to find another person to join your approved lobby and sandbox lobbies are even more of a barren wasteland. I don't think simplifying things into two categories will help much either (assuming the proposed gameplay categorized mods work similarly to how sandbox functions now) as you'd splinter off all the modded folks into their own bubble. For example, I will play mostly Custom Difficulty/Twitch Integration lobbies nowadays, and if I had to use a whole different save just for playing these, I probably wouldn't go back to the non-gameplay realm to play with all the normies.
But what do I know? I just stick funny googly eyes on bugs and try to stay in my own lane of not modifying the actual gameplay mechanics.

    • @ToxNano
      @ToxNano 2 года назад +3

One big problem the modding update has introduced is the complete lack of differentiation between host and client side mods. Every time someone joins a modded server, they have to wait till _all_ of the hosts mods are downloaded, regardless of if that's necessary. It also disables all client side mods of the joining player, regardless of category.
As an example: If I wanted to play with flashlightX3 before the mod update, I could just do that. Now I not only have to find a modded server, but a modded server that is specifically running flashlightX3 and not running any of the mods I might not want to play with. In most cases, the amount of Servers that fit that criteria is zero (without even factoring specific missions and assignments), and if I host myself 99% of the time no one will join.

I think as long as user files and backup files are stored locally, this is a moot issue. It may be annoying to restore a file and lose a mission worth of progress, however it would be better than banning some mods outright just due to bad actors, potential or otherwise.

  • @lein5300

This might be a hot take, idk. Anyway, fundamentally, "cheating" requires that someone be cheated. A victimless act is not cheating.
At the end of the day, *a lot* of this so-called (potential) "cheating" basically boils down to, "That guy over there is making his meaningless number go up faster than my meaningless number". So what? It's a meaningless number. In cases like that, this is purely an emotional issue, not a practical one. You (whoever) "feel" rank, XP, etc. actually means something, therefore, [...]. Practical issues would be ones that change how the game works for other people without their consent.
I wouldn't even consider it cheating if there was an "instantly unlock all OCs/gear/cosmetics/etc." button so long as it has no impact on anyone else's game and how they want to play. I see no reason why the guy that enjoys the grind and the guy that despises the grind can't both play the way they each want to play while also having the ability to play with each other if they want to. So long as the button is equally available to everyone, I don't see the issue.
Personally, I don't even use approved mods (at least on my main save), and still I don't see policing others who are minding their own business as a battle worth fighting. I say let people play the way they want to play and get over yourself (again, whoever) if "B-but the value of my meaningless-in-the-first-place rank is now diluted!" is your approach to the topic.
As for GSG's criteria on what's "approved", etc. yeah it's weird, but I think I'd sooner see "sandbox" mods just be "approved" than vice versa, and just define it as "these are mods that change how the game works for other players too."

I suffer from night blindness, so IRL it can be extremely difficult to drive at night or go most places that are not lit brightly enough or have some sort of flashlight. When I started playing DRG, I literally couldn’t see outside of my flashlight with no flares and with flares it was much better but still hard to see at times (even with gamma all the way up). Brighter objects is verified helps with this so much. The main reason why it’s in verified is bc it just increases the brightness for objects already with illumination. Sure, it makes it easier for some to see objects, but for accessibility reasons (and recolors for that matter), it should stay verified.
That being said, it is frustrating that nitra and gold brighter objects mod is approved, not verified. Especially since it already shimmers a bit on ultra settings, but for lower-end pcs ultra is hard to consistently run, especially during swarms. I hope they do fix that, and I would love ghost ship to just makes everything brighter for accessibility reasons

    make missions easy for recording
make a bunch of praetorians spawn because you find fighting them fun
make missions harder because you're bored and want a challenge
    with your version you could:
    make missions easy for recording
not make missions easy, SLIGHTLY lowering the speed players progress for the timespan it takes to download wemod
(and this is actually one of the objections to the war on drugs, if you outlaw heroin, people start buying fentanyl)
make enemies harder but you can't finish the mission so you can't actually progress
make enemies more fun but you can't finish so you can't progress

The first two mods are likely not sandbox because they dont technically provide extra changes to rewards in actuality. The payout increase isnt obscene, and it is relatively in line with the increase in difficulty, so you arent technically getting anything more for the time, effort and skill required outside what the game normally gives.
Hazard 1 giving hazard 5 payouts would be changing progression. Hazard 6 giving payouts in line with the relative growth in difficulty doesnt change progression, in effect.

Any rework to modding categories that limits abuse would also limit the engaging, difficulty increasing, and overhaul mods. DRG's modding system is the best I've ever seen in a game like this. It lets you tailor the game to how you like it without relegating you to sandbox. Something like starship troopers elite and hazard 6 are the only cases that shouldn't fit into approved, because as you said they alter the payout. Any other restrictions will ruin it.
I agree with some of the other comments here. This is very petty and misses the point of the mods. Its not wrong to make the game easier. Theres no moral failing of brighter objects. This is basically difficullty level gatekeeping. I understand the instinct, but its wrong. If you don't like people using brighter objects to make the game easier, stop using it. That's it. It's client side so automatically and objectively meets the requirements for approved, as it should.
You also don't seem to understand the categories. To simplify them, Verified is client side. Doesn't matter what it does, if it works on your game while other people in the lobby don't have it installed, its verified. Approved is almost anything that doesn't directly modify the end mission payout or unlock things. Makes the game way easier? Still approved. Makes the game way harder? Still approved. As you've said, there are a few specific examples of mods that violate those categories, and those are the only problem, and even they're not really a problem unless those violations of categories became more widespread, but as they haven't yet, they aren't an issue.

  • @AkemiOmni

As long as DRG has all data stored locally, all gameplay is peer to peer, and has literally no anti-cheat the only thing modding really needs to ensure is that verified mods have no issues with players playing with unmodded versions of the game, to ensure no desyncing or other issues crop up. Since if people wanted to alter the game, they can already do it and have zero resistance.
If someone wanted to actually cheat they wouldn't use a mod to make no enemies spawn so they can run missions back to back quickly. They would just use a save editor or a cheat table to modify their stats, inventory, and save. They can set their level to 1k, have all the overclocks, all cosmetics, and have 9.9 million of each resources.

I agree to a point, and I'd agree much more if this were competitive PVP. But one of the aspects of this game that makes it so popular is specifically the ability to mod it, whether that's to make it look a little different, or to make it variously harder, or to make it more accessible for a wider variety of player types, or simply to make it more viable for solo players to get through higher hazard levels without being a gaming guru. As others have noted, the brighter objects mod can be great for accessibility; some of those objects are far more reflective already at higher graphics settings; and even something as simple as adjusting gamma, contrast, or brightness can make those same objects more visible at the cost of a sense of atmosphere. Spawning buckets of gold is obviously out of bounds for anything but sandbox, but everything else is, in this context and for me, up to the players.

If you look at the mod page, it now has support for Mod Hub and the googly eyes can be made to now glow in the dark through the mod's Mod Hub settings page (and I believe I set it so they don't glow in the dark for new users of the mod).
At the end of the day, this is just a funny mod and if the eyes glowing in the dark is that game changing for you, you should find yourself a Scout that knows how to use the flare gun.

You have made a big mistake in this video:
You are not the one to approve those mods, the devs are fine with them, that's literally the only thing that counts.
When it comes to balance and modding, it's the devs opinion that matters, the devs could have made it so that no mod that changes anything other than cosmetics is allowed, yet they chose differently. If a mod "breaks" balance and is in the "wrong" category acording to you, then we already have a problem, it's not your vision, it's the devs vision that is important.

People need to care a whole lot less about what others do in a non-competitive game where the main objective is fun. If anything the argument should be that things should be less restrictive. For instance there's really no good reason for approved mods to disable achievements because if people want to cheat in order to get them they can do so without even playing the game.
    This is all just sad.

Letting mods be listed, but then later reassigned to a proper classification by a dev/Moderator is the better choice.
If people REALLY WANT to complain that much, just have ANY MODS not checked and then assigned a position (Approved, Progression allowed or Sandbox) to be marked as "Unchecked" or "Waiting Classification" so players know they are using a mod that COULD VERY WELL Nuke their progression as soon the mod gets checked and then thrown into Sandbox.

The devs have stated before that they're alright with people using mods to play the game faster. I think the system we have now works well just need to be better moderated. if someone is going through the effort of modding the game so they can cheat, they most likely will also just install cheat engine. the group of people who falls in-between those two groups of people those how are willing to cheat using approved mods and those who install cheat engine is a small minority and is not worth worrying about.

That won't solve all the issues with modding but it's a good step in the right direction.

Audio mods like kekw detonator and ones that change the sounds of cave leeches when they grab you can also be grouped up with visual mods like brighter objects
I use kekw detonator cause its funny but i cant deny its basically cheating as it makes it much more obvious when theres a bulk as i hear risitas laughing in place of its growls
I havent used cave leech audio mods but they also make it much mote obvious youre about to get grabbed (and im pretty sure you can hear those mods before you would normally hear the hissing without them)
These are only two cases but surely theres more, they are in verified but they can be used to give you a huge advantage over other players in the same lobby making the game a lot easier (i would say even more so than brighter objects)

Tbh this Video is more on Puritan type vibes than being truly a decent argumentation on Modding for DRG.
For starters, the Game is a PVE one, with Coop Online Multiplayer while also running PERFECTLY FINE Offline solo, that already means players can EASILY pick what the F they want to play and how they want.
Payout Modiffiers on Approved have to be checked also on WHAT ELSE CHANGES that devs decide makes the Modified Payout Fair, your Discussion of it seems stupid on that ground, So unless Devs make a concise explanation of the more "egregious" approved tier Payout changing Mods (Some claim Swarm control is busted) and you manage to make a PROPER LOGICAL FACT BASED COUNTER ARGUMENT, the Payout changing Mods in Approved seem to me a "Devs decided, their problem" topic.
Shit like shinny objects or Minerals visible in darkness mods are QoL basic mods, some people don't have the Eyesight to PROPERLY play Vanilla, same for Better Bosco, some players want to Play Solo but aren't yet in the level to make reliable Haz 4-5 runs, That mod is more of a spoon of sugar mod that eases the BS SLIGHTLY, but still makes the success of the Run on the Player, so it being Progression allowed is fair, after all, BOSCO IS FOR SOLO PLAY ONLY, what? You gonna get Pissy someone playing a Solo Haz 5 run is using a Bosco with MGs that stun and proc electricity damage while carrying 2 Cryo Rockets that freeze anything sans Dreadnaughs and packing 5 Revives? That would be Bothering a person in an Event whose ONLY PERCEIVED CRIME is Cosplaying some famous person and has a minor deyail wrong levels of silly.

Dude, at the very least be honest with why people cheating with mods bothers you enough to make a whopping 33 minute video about it. We get it, you play a lot of DRG and think people should have to go though the same progression you did. You realize there's a difference between being invested in the game and being so invested you care how other players enjoy their game. If I wanna progress while playing with my younger brother using 40 nitra, what's it to you? Didn't you just make a video about respecting people who roleplay and asked them to respect your playstyle? Hmmm.
GSG mod rules being inconsistent was a guarantee from the moment they decided to police mods. Honestly, I don't know why they even bother. Imagine valve policing l4d mods. I actually agree with you regarding the categories, and I think the simplest change would just be to make all sandbox mods approved. Everybody gets to progress while playing sandbox mods. Nobody will join one of these lobbies by accident, as we already have modded lobby indicators.

    • @andrehashimoto8056
      @andrehashimoto8056 2 года назад +1

Tbh the only thing GSG policing should be is more to just make sure that if a Mod picks their interest, they could either implement it in Vanilla faster, or if the Mod alters payout but also ADDS a fsir challenge to it, so the payout still is inline with Vanilla payout metrics....
Tbh the only things these classifications do is avtually put mods in the proper spot so Players CAN be prepared, GSG devs looking at those may also be so as to give members of the team that aren't activelly working towards the new season something to work in the company, that's, searching for new Ideas coming from the Mod community while also giving a degree of Interaction between Players/Modders and the Dev team

I'm a firm believer that people should play the game however they want to play in order to have fun. Do I personally agree with using mods to make the game easier? No. Does that stop me from judging people who do? Also no. But to that end, I don't particularly care if people go do their own thing and play the game how they want to as long as they keep it away from me. Ultimately, the choice of which mods to use comes down to what individuals decide. "Approved mods" aren't the most efficient way to make the game easier anyway, since any schmuck with cheat engine or steam achievement manager can just spool that up and give themselves oodles of whatever resource they want, or unlock all the achievements for themselves in a fell swoop.
TL;DR: if you don't want to cheat, then don't, and if you do want to cheat, well, you can definitely do worse than DRG. At least DRG doesn't have any PvP or competitive elements, I would rather see people cheating here than in CS:GO or Escape from Tarkov or Hell Let Loose.

Which means you're not getting free stuff... You're putting in more work, for more stuff. GSG no doubt understood that when they gave it the approved status. You're nit picking using their own standards, even when GSG themselves WROTE the standards, and used those standards to approve the mod. In other words, GSG are going with rules as intended, where as you're going with rules as written.

It's also worth addressing the fact that as you mentioned briefly the way the game is balanced is a huge part of it and it's gameplay loop. If a new player uses cheat mods to unlock everything, they miss out on the satisfaction from getting the things themselves. They will also likely get overwhelmed to some extent with the amount of upgrades, maybe not a lot but it will still very likely make them less able to appreciate the different ways of playing the game a more experienced player would be able to see better. All in all, in some edge cases it can negatively affect game's lifetime for a person and therefor kinda for everyone in a way

Don't approved mods have to be looked over by a dev? I'm pretty sure you can just edit a savefile (or just cheatengine) to get all the overcloaks and minerals you want. Its not really a huge deal for people to get additional rewards on niche extreme difficulties, especially if a dev okays it.

  • @six5056

i think if the devs believed that these mods were harmful the community and the games natural progression, they would have done something about it. In future they could easily move mods into other categories (such as moving a Haz 6/7 mod into a sandbox category). Alternatively they could advise the creators of the mods to change some of the reward bonuses and stuff like that, balancing the mods to mitigate the potential exploitation. all in all i think that if the devs of DRG are ok with these mods being approved, then it is likely that many of these mods are balanced and fair. i completely trust the devs in their decisions to approve these mods because they've created an amazing game and genuinely haven't made any decisions that i disagree with at this point in time. i probably don't have the greatest understanding around this topic as i've only ever played the game vanilla, but this video is really insightful so thank you!!
edit: Wanted to mention that i do believe that some of the last few mods seem unbalanced, and this comment was mainly my opinion aimed at the mods that increase game difficulty.

When I fist went through the list of mods and checked out what I might get, I instinctively avoided the ones that I KNOW I would've used to cheat bc I have no self control and I would've exploited tf outta those mods. You brought up almost everyone that I looked at and didn't get lmao. I know for a fact that if I give myself that option I'll definitely make the game unfun for myself

Game tools, do you think it could have an aproved version that only allows hostile and non-resource boosting enemies to be spawned en-mass. By this an good example is that you could summon an indefinate amount of bulk dets, but Crassus bulks would NOT be a summon option. This would mean that hoarders, lootbugs, prospectors, korloks, and so on would not be an available spawn option. On this note, dwarf items like grenades and turrets would also not be an available spawn. What are your thoughts on this for an approved mod that allows for naturally impossible fights whilst not being AS abusable at all for progression.

I dont agree with the root argument. I dont really see the problems with "cheating" mods. You Always know If people are using them in your Team and they cant Join. This drg is not a pvp competitive game. And if people really want to cheat some resourses (with mods they have to go through missions, even though easy) or just download a save editor from the internet and adding yourself enough of everything. Living with this knowledge really makes every other problem dust.

Thank you for the video. These guys who use the mods which make the game just a casual walk through the DARK caves probably download it for fun. Because if we're talking about a people who are reeeally that bad that they even need these mods... if there will be 3% of them, I would still hardly believe in it.
I would like to watch the video about the game settings and some kind of tricks to improve performance/fps. Including some mods maybe.

I object to this, as one:
GSG has actually stated the reason they allow progress, "Making the game moderately easier is a very inefficient way to boost your progression; you still have to go through the mission loop. Improving your win percentage is not comparable to spawning millions of gold in a mission... ...If you use these mods to get an advantage in missions, you are more likely to be bored as you make the game easier than intended. We have spent a lot of time tweaking the game to be as engaging as possible."
and two, I object to his "solution", with current swarm control you could either:
make missions easy, which doesn't really increase xp / materials that much
      make missions easy for recording
make a bunch of praetorians spawn because you find fighting them fun
make missions harder because you're bored and want a challenge
      with your version you could:
      make missions easy for recording
not make missions easy, SLIGHTLY lowering the speed players progress for the timespan it takes to download wemod
(and this is actually one of the objections to the war on drugs, if you outlaw heroin, people start buying fentanyl)
make enemies harder but you can't finish the mission so you can't actually progress
make enemies more fun but you can't finish so you can't progress
