    1/50th / f/1.8 / ISO100 / AF-F Auto Area

    Camera itself is great. I love it. The problem was the hype created by people and Nikon themselves before release of both Z7 and Z6. People just expected more and were unwilling to accept shortcomings (one memory card, no grip,etc). I especially blame Big youtube channels and their initial reviews that gave this camera kind of a bad reputation (T&C are done for me as an example of $ biased channels). Long live unbiased reviewers like yourself!!!

    • @halfphild

      The hype was stupid. Can you just imagine what it would've been like with zero release hype? Just pure - 'where did THAT come from?' I'm right there with ya though. I used to watch TC but I can't honestly do it anymore with the way certain reviews went down. They seem like good people and all but I know this camera lives up to and outperforms in some cases other stuff out there and yet... crickets. Well, I'm sure you know, I'm grateful for your watch and comments. Keep creating. Cheers!

      Speaking as a huge Nikon fanboy myself, I was dismayed with the announcement of the Z6 and Z7. Though I upgraded from the D810 to the D850, the thought to upgrade to the Z7 never crossed my mind. Nikon's decision to sell a handicapped product in the face of Sony (and canon to a lessor extent) was a huge mistake. The only thing keeping me in the Nikon camp is fear of having to purchase all new Sony glass. There is no reason for Nikon to lag so far behind its competitors, especially with such a glorious history and a rather turbulent future if they fail to innovate.

      @@halfphild My pleasure Phillip - and exciting! I was just recommending you to a new Nikon Z6 owner yesterday :) Here is a video idea - why not explore the different Z6 video modes (neutral vs flat vs the others), share your experience, learnings and advice to others to get an image they love. I haven’t seen much else on this topic on RUclips. What I have found is I love my Nikon Z6 for videoing indoors or in low light situations. But surprisingly I prefer my Panasonic GH4 for outdoors / sunny weather outside (no ND filter required - it is quick and easy to set up and the footage and colours look superb). I only recently bought a variable ND filter (the same you use and recommended) for my Z6, so perhaps I simply need to improve my technique for outdoors…

    Great review! Really! When I was ready to make the purchase I did tons of research and like the comment pinned up top, there was such negative reviews but with simple research from the Nikon website itself and looking at the specs I realize it was non-sense. I have shot with the red/arri and have been involved in small professional productions and I will tell you there is NO perfect camera. The value of the Z6 is unmatchable in my opinion. This is a great hybrid system, It's a small camera package that offers a lot for your buck, the savings compared to a Sony for example I can use on gear and make this into a monster. Thank you for your review, I hope you continue to post great content like this!

  • @RandyParsley
    @RandyParsley 5 лет назад +1

    More and more I'm finding that specs don't always tell the story it comes down to what is pleasing to the eye. Your Z6 delivers wonderful pleasing images. I learned some of this with my Sony a6400 and realizing that my GH5 with smaller sensor, older processor, still produces a more "pleasing" image to my eye. I think modern cameras have so many factors that the only way you can determine how great a camera delivers is to actually see what it produces. Look at the EOS R from Canon, so many RUclipsrs trashed it and later you see some of them getting one because the images, despite the specs are so very pleasing. There for sure was a rush to judgment of the Z6 when it first came out, but I noticed more and more people saying "Wait a minute, the Z6 is producing video that is absolutely beautiful!" Funny how that all works. Good to see you are finding success on this platform. I'm still here with no Z6 but continued interest in what is happening with your life from your vlogging days. You have a real talent for producing polished and interesting videos that's for sure!

    • @halfphild
      @halfphild  5 лет назад +2

      Hey Randy! Dude you nailed it. It's that's easy out of camera image that sells us. And honestly what matters more? Because I constantly go back to the idea that none of the specs actually matter when the camera or lens or flash or whatever is too complicated to create with. I brought the Z6 paired with the nifty 50s out to the coast today and I just love the easy setup. I never regret rocking a day trip with a basic setup.

    Hello Phillip I just discovered your RUclips channel and I understood very clearly how you explained everything, I just have a quick question, I’m shooting a wedding tomorrow and plan on doing a couple videos, you shoot videos in
    4K/24 but is there a big difference by shooting at 4K/30 instead? Is a friend and want to make sure is good and sharp, thanks

    • @halfphild
      @halfphild  4 года назад

      Hey Santiago! Thanks for stopping by and watching! I'm my opinion there isn't a HUGE difference between 24 & 30 frames per second that you'll notice that much. Sure there's a difference and you'll probably notice it but not the point that it'll make it break your shoot.
      The truth is, I know that 24fps gives me the most cinematic 'human' motion appearance I can get. It's not too slow, or too fast. And when matched with the 180 degree rule, it just looks best. But again, it's hard to notice and it's an artistic esthetic we're talking about so everyone has a different vision and that's the way it should be. Life would suck if we all created the exact same stuff the same way. ;)
      I hope this helps.
      Cheers and have fun at your shoot!

Had a chance to try out the 14-30 and 24-70 2.8S lenses on the weekend. The 24-70 is truly amazing. I bought the Z6 with an eye (so to speak) to improving video quality. @@halfphild Like you I have the 50 1.8 and it is the sharpest lens I have ever use and that includes all the great lenses 55 years experience filtered through my hands. But, a zoom, any zoom to be so sharp AND excellent rendering there is no question in my mind the best zoom on the planet is the 24-70 2.8 S.
      I was going to hold off and wait for the 70-200 2.8 but after shooting the 24-70 2.8 and going head to head with my G and E versions I rank them 1. S 2.8, 2, f/4 S, 3, G 2.8, and 4th the much more expensive E 2.8. To be fair, the E does add a few stops slower shutter speed in lower light conditions than the G because of the E has very good VR. But all of them work better with the Z6 IBIS than in-lens VR. I have that sinking feeling that comes when you realize it is going to be a very expensive year.
      Regarding the body...yeah, all your points were spot on and it has taken over from my D850 because the Z is just so much fun to use.

    • @halfphild
      @halfphild  5 лет назад

      Hey Stan, thanks for confirming the 24-70S sharpness claims. I'll be renting asap to test it myself and I'm afraid once I get it I will have to buy it... Do you think the added sharpness we're all seeing is a result of the closer distance to the sensor? I know that plays a large role but I wonder if that's all that's different here. I just sold my 2.8E. LOVED that lens but you're right, it wasn't the sharpest. However, with it's VR, it was a do-it-all lens for me for a long time. If I'm going to pursue more event photography I'm going to need another 24-70. I'd love to see more videos comparing the f/4 to f/2.8. At least you've got an incredible backup with the D850!

    Phillip, Would you know how well the auto focus would work on a zoom lens? If I were to be focusing on a bull rider in a rodeo and then zoomed in and out, would the focus remain on the subject? I am aware that most 35mm lenses are vario-focal, not parfocal.
    Secondly, what real world differences would I see when using the external recorder and getting a 10 bit 4:2:2 vs 8bit 4:2:0

      Hey Mark, every single video clip you see was in AF-F Auto Area. But one thing to be aware of is that in 120fps, the face tracking doesn't exist yet. It still does great imo and it's easy enough to touch the screen where I want it to track if it happens to focus incorrectly. But if you watch Q spinning by on the playground equipment, it did a decent job staying with her. That said, I usually don't stick with one shot for too long... I'm sure you understand. I need to do a short video on the focus peaking in manual though. It's nice to have.
