I remember when the squidgy revolution began, a mate and I near went mad watching DVDs and buying lures then headed for Tamboon inlet and couldn't believe what aoccured, we hade an unbelievable 3 days of flathead fishing and I've been hooked ever since thanks for all the effort you put in it changed my fishing forever.

I remember my old man making wood grubs out of rubber and frogs for the trout back in the early 80's and catching lots of fish. He past away in the late 80's and I lost touch in using soft plastics till I went to Kmart and got a container of Bucket of Baits and never looked back and my tackle box started to look like a bait box of plastics and still does they are the best bait I put on my hooks. I've enjoyed listening to the journey of Squidgy as I know 20yrs ago me and a few mates were catching everything on plastic and people thought we're mad and didn't even realise I was one of small handful spreading the love of Squidgy's!now you wouldn't find a lure fisho who doesn't use plastics and yeah still got packets we your & Bushy's mug on it😅👍🏻

I can’t thank you both enough I remember my dad and I walked into a bait shop and saw these new things at the entrance my dad and I said why not give ‘em a go we brought something that mimics what the small bait fish were at the entrance and that afternoon on low tide we pulled in multiple breeds but most impressive was the one after the other large tailor we brought in. 15 Taylor over 30 cm we made heaps of great food fish cakes ect people said we were crazy for wanting to use them for eating but look now people will keep them and treated right they can be amazing
Thankyou for your massive contribution to our past time you have been a part of making so many great memories for me personally but I reckon many many others I hope your still wetting a line for many many many years to come and one day I’ll find you and it would be my absolute honour to shake your hand and say thanks because catching fish is the win from the last time , remembering us trying these lures for the first time and the experience with my dad as a young fella can not be brought or be described how much fun and great times I I had with dad it was like we won tje lotto
    Thanks

Awesome mate, I’m a fan of podcasts so you’ve got me! I still remember my first fish on a Squidgies plastic was over at Tangalooma early mid 2000’s. Everyone was watching me working one isolated log half submerged on a stretch of white sandy beach with the clearest water, when I caught a flathead. Not a single other fisho got a bite and they were using bait.
Great work mate, keep them coming!

Yes Steve, a big thanks!, will always be greatful to that movement yourself and Bushy provided us anglers from that 2002 era onwards!. Sure, Im a kid in a candy shop and spoled for choice these days, as are most of us, but that bloodworm 80mm-100mm wriggler never leaves the tackle box, and gets great rotation!, Despite the craze of slow pitch jigging, and vibing, It's certainly always nice to re- visit the squidgies in particular on the flats with a light 7 ft + rod, 1000-2500 sized reel with sand between the feet😊

Soft plastics indeed have been a major change to fishing. I still have some original Mr Twister ones (red and white) and early Squidgies. Using your sons resin heads has seen some amazing takes from flathead, whiting and snapper while estuary fishing. It is not uncommon for them to be taken on their way down through the water column. Bloodworm Squidgies are my favourite and they do very well during the bloodworm runs we get in SA.

Man I was lucky to experience this time, I started bream comps in the 2000's and got to see so much innovation in lures for Australian bream and bass. Squidgies, gulp shrimp and Jackall lures has gota be the biggest changes to where there started to be huge numbers in tournaments, probably also influence by the AFC and related earlier broadcasted tournaments, I believe you entered. By the late 2000's there was 200+ people entering bream tournaments on a regular basis. IMO the cost of it all has blown out and turn a lot of people away. The lack of broadcasted tournaments has a huge impact on the tournament scene. If the tackle industry got behind it and pushed broadcasting professional looking tournaments the industry would massively benefit from it. I still to this day think it was a huge mistake for our industry not broadcasting the BETS series / super series and Southern bream series at peak in the late 00's. That was the chance to turn this sport into a truly professional sport for many rather than just the fishing journos and Mr S Morgan. I think well all lacked a group body that tied us all together and helped push the sport. Still fun but imagine what it could have been if it took on mainstream sport.

I will never forget our first trip from SA to Merimbula ( 2009 ) and on the off chance that you would answer I emailed you and asked for a bit of advice and I couldn't believe it when you did, that was amazing and I have never forgotten that. I still use those flick baits for bream that you recommended. Looking forward to more podcasts ...

The only plastic lures I could get year's and years ago was called a bucket of baits, it was a small bucket full of different types, hardly any suited were I'd fish so I would trim them to what I wanted, I'd also make my own jig heads, I was all over squidgies when they come out.

Hey Starlo, we met on the Goulburn at quiet spot in Ghin Ghin many years ago. My kids hear that tale everytime we see you on YT or TV. I'm still not a 100% convert to plastics, still prefer hard bodies and bait. After watching this I'm ready to go empty my wallet at Hot Tackle and fill a new box.

The "Which plastic" question is, the proverbial how long is a piece of string..... BUT from Rockhampton to Perth, the Squidgy Wriggler in Bloodworm and Fish in Black and Gold are the two plastics I bet my life on. Literally changed the way I fish when you guys released them. Always used Mister Twisters, but your plastics just took the game to a whole new level. Another great video Starlo, and a fun stroll down memory lane.

The OG 80mm and 100mm Bloodworm Wrigglers were insane. Won a BETS and a couple of other Bream tournaments on these. Before the days of live-streaming, when it came to winners interviews and the question about lures used, I would always say "Gulp Shrimp". Sorry Starlo 😆

Well done Steve. Information like you provide to the angling fraternity is invaluable to individuals like me. I will admit soft plastics has held that 'Rocket Science' aura for me, for quite some time. Indeed it's only been the last five or six years that I have actively spent time 'chucking' plastics at fish! And I mean chucking!! Never really put considerations in place that you mention in the podcast. Mostly I was guided by watching video and TV and using what the particular presenter was tying on and matching that to target a species? So thank you for the insight into; size, action and depth (and colour considerations). I look forward to part two....

It doesnt matter whether its the top or bottom quarter,
Tie on your lure of choice and get it in the water.
Never stop learning the techniques and tricks,
For this style of angling is fun
    So never quit.
You will learn so much about whats below,
Be wary though some finned friends like it retrieved,
    nice and slow.
It doesnt matter if you are a professional, intermediate or novice just get outdoors and give it a go.

What’s the chances of getting the rainbow trout pattern back in the squidgy fish, 65 mm, my favourite trout plastic? Great as usual, keep up the good work,🖐👌

what's the best soft plastic for ....??? well thought out answer Steve and excellent presentation but your slightly off. The answer is the squidgee wriggler, only the size colour and jig head need vary. However all anglers will eventually want variety then your spot on. also get your son working that printer to bring back the squidgee bug.

  • @needmoreboost6369
    @needmoreboost6369 Год назад +1

I’d have to add my 2 bob about species being similar in most places, typically it’s true the techniques will carry over but one fish in particular that need’s recognition that I had fun catching and is well documented not to even live in nsw and it’s the jungle perch! Often very aggressive predator and They are in Coffs Harbour! In the creeks and unlike up north are incredibly difficult to catch they are timid and easy to spook and the only way I’ve caught them is on floating white bread! I do believe that it was written in one of your books that they are only found in qld and possibly would be protected in other state’s,I’ve got only one concern and that’s the system they’re in is under constant threat from developing and pollution and may already be gone
