- This is The 1/2/1988 Rose Bowl. Michigan State vs USC. George Perles, MSU Coach was one of the architects of The The Steel Curtain Defence. He carried that knowledge to MSU and built a championship calibre team in 1987. The offense wasn't explosive but it was mistake free and could pound the run with the best in college football. QB Bobby Macallister was a gifted runner and with All American TB Lorenzo White The Spartans won a Rose Bowl. The Big Ten's first win in awhile. This was Larry Smith's first year at USC and The Trojans won The Pac 12 but lost twice to Sparty. A season opener in East Lansing and this Rose Bowl game. I claim no rights.
Remember this New Year's Day as well. Ohio State had a new coach hired by the time. This game showed PAC 10 dominance of Big Ten in Rose Bowl was coming to an end. Defense was a way to start winning this game. Better passing attacks helped in the 90s. George Perles won old school with defense like USC and UCLA did in mid 80s.
The last rose bowl game on nbc
USC getting here was a surprise as some think 87 UCLA was Terry Donahue’s best ever team
I was there I remember the punts
