How to Start a Husqvarna Chainsaw

- Starting and stopping the Husqvarna chainsaw is simple. Follow these steps to start and stop a Husqvarna chainsaw to ensure safe usage and a longer life for your chainsaw.
Activate the chain brake before starting the chainsaw. When starting your chainsaw with a cold engine, set the choke control in the choke position. Press the air purge 5 or 6 times. Press the decompression valve.
Pull the starter handle with your right hand and pull out the starter cord slowly until you feel a resistance. Then, firmly pull the starter handle. Pull rapidly until the engine fires, or tries to start. Listen for a noise that sounds like the engine partially started, or fired for a few revolutions.
Push in the choke control and push in the decompression valve again. Repeat pulling the starter handle until the engine starts. Set the engine to idle be depressing the throttle lock and quickly increasing the throttle RPMs with the throttle trigger and releasing immediately. Disengage the chain brake before using your chainsaw.
When starting you chainsaw with a warm or previously run engine, pull the choke control out and push it back in again. Press the air purge at least 6 times. Press the decompression valve.
Pull the starter handle with your right hand and pull out the starter cord slowly until you feel a resistance. Then, firmly and rapidly pull the starter handle. Pull rapidly until the engine fires, or tries to start. Set the engine to idle as soon as possible. Disengage the chain brake before using your chainsaw. Stop the engine by switching off the ignition.

I went to my dealer and he informed me that I was not able to start my chainsaw because I hand not obtained the PhD in chainsaw starting required by this particular company as opposed to every other company that has a 2 or 3-step starting procedure.

I’ve had various chainsaws over the years. Usually the more affordable work horse American brands. I was really excited to buy this chainsaw. It has done nothing but give me problems! I do everything correctly. Have it tuned up and checked out regularly. But I have to say… I hate my chainsaw!
Modern Husqvarna and Stihl entry level and mid-range chainsaws are made in China, only the the pro saws are made in Sweden and Germany but those are crazy expensive, if you want a reliable saw you go with Echo, even the cheapest saw they make is quality because they are made in Japan.
I agree! If I can start it once I turn it off then it cannot be restarted until Otis absolutely cool! I wish I never bought it.
husky start steps, online are very helpful, If all else fails, try lowe's are home depot rental store, one of these fellows may help you start saw for free, if they can't start it take it to a saw shop.
@EustisRider I have a 20 year-old Stihl MS 260 Farm Boss. Once it's warm you can start it in one good pull even after 15-20min...awesome quality. Nothing against Husqvarna though, used several of their saws and hey always did their job ok. I prefer Stihl by price and looks, mostly.
This saw has been nothing but a nightmare since the day I have owned it. I have had two different shops look at it, still getting it started is a miracle. I need to move on from this piece of crap. Once running its fine, I have never understood why its so hard to start. I have found that moving the blue choke-fast idle critical to keeping it going once its warmed up. The instructions in this video have been helpful, thank you.
You have to pull the choke out and then put it in before you start EVERYTIME. Whether you need it or not, that's one trick I've learned.

Yep...I agree. I get so frustrated with my saw when it won’t start....especially when I have trees laying down following snow or windstorms and the damn thing won’t start. Tree services cost an arm and a leg, looking to upgrade to something reliable.
Great. Hope mine starts. Haven’t used it since Sandy. I ran it dry. So we will see. I was watching just to familiarize myself with the unit.

New Husquvarna C236 arrived this morning and after assembly and complete pre-start duties, the machine would not start, not even a brief fart.
Removed the top cover and fitted a neon timing light in lieu of the spark plug.
Only with the plug removed would the timing light show output from the ignition module, and that was with a rotation speed that would be impossible to achieve with the plug in place.
Perhaps the final check in the PRC does not involve a test run?
My 288XPW is 23 yrs old & starts with 2-3 pulls cold,1 pull warm every time.You definitely need to use the decompression valve when cold starting though,with 175 lbs+ compression it'll practically throw your shoulder out otherwise. I cant see how their smaller saws would even need a decomp button.With all the starting problems most of their new smaller homeowner saws have,you'd be better off buying one of their older small/mid sized pro saws used from a trusted seller for less cash.

Well, this looks like ritual for me. I have an electric chainsaw and thinking to buy a gas chainsaw. Didn't know there are so many steps:)
Wanted a stihl but was told this was the better saw. Have had it eight months and wish I had bought a comparable Stihl. Wouldn't start today so used my twenty-year-old Stihl. Went right through twenty two-inch hickory. Two hours later still won't start. A slow revving saw when it runs. Into the shop. Fortunately I have another older Stihl that start all the time. Perhaps it is the new emission standards screwing it up.
Take heed on the tip of setting the fast idle, cold or hot. These homeowner Husky's love to start on fast idle.
What could stop the Starter cord from pulling smoothly to the end of the cord -- if a spark plug is installed. It pulls normally if I remove the spark plug? My saw does not have a decompression button. The ultimate problem is that the Chainsaw will not start. I believe that is because the cord does not turn the flywheel far enough to create a spark.

Unofficial way of starting a bad starting saw if it's been standing for a while is to remove the spark plug and shoot a small drop(6-10 drips)of petrol lighter fluid straight into the cylinder,replace the plug and pull!Also make sure you fill with fresh fuel as petrol goes stale after a while 🤗
Just bought a brand new Husqvarna 455e. Unboxed and followed the starting instructions to the letter. Still can't figure out why this chain saw will not start. I have been using chain saws for 30 years, mostly Stihl and I clearly got spoiled by chain saws that simply start. I will try and figure this Husqvarna out tomorrow and if it still will not start - back it goes. So much for all the reviews that say how easily Husqvarna saws start lol.

@@StellaLowery-wk5du Hey, I was so frustrated with Husqvarna I took mine back and went to the local rental store and asked what chain saw they have the best luck with (not having to service all the time). They sell Stihl, Echo and Husqvarna - "they rent Echo." I was a bit reluctant not knowing much about Echo, but I bought one based on his recommendation. One of the best purchases I have made. I have had it since last year and I have used it a lot. It starts EVERY time after 3-4 pulls. Choke it, pull and it "burps," push the choke in and pull it again and it just starts and then cuts great.
All the safety devices are there to keep your limbs intact. A family friend of mine was in a tree cutting branches off when he nearly cut his leg off, this was in the mid-late 1980s. He never used his chainsaw again after that. He didn't make contact with his leg, but it was so close he decided to get rid of it.
I don't understand why people don't wear safety gear. I dinged up my knee with a saw--only about 10 stitches. People tell my I should have been wearing chaps. I agree, but the problem is they hadn't been invented or at least we hadn't heard about them yet. We're talking 1969. My first cord wood saw was a Stihl 030. It was still running up to a few years ago when my son dropped a tree on it.
Had a husq for 5yrs laid on the shelf used a little echo worked great finally got the energy to screw around with the husq finally got it started she peeters out when ready to cut tried to check the plug needed a5 ft bar what a joke its easer to start the engine on a DC3.
You will notice here that everyone complaining that their saw won't start does not say anything about what they did to fix the problem except go back to Lowes. Most people who know their saws would try to diagnose & fix it at least to the point of spark or fuel problems. But if you can't do that, then the next best thing is to show everyone how little you know about chainsaw repairs.
I bought a little Husqvarna 235e (crappy little saw I know but I needed a small saw for lighter jobs) from a guy on craigslist for $75. He included the original box and paperwork where he had sent it back to Lowes for repair. It was hard to start, bogged when you gave it more throttle and wouldn't idle. Adjusted the carb and it runs fine now. I also noticed the oil pump wasn't working, I doubt the previous owner even noticed that. That wasn't hard or expensive to replace either.
F*ck you. Do you really believe everyone here is using a chainsaw for the first time? Most of us have had other saws; most of us have read the directions; many of us have watched the video but we still have problems. Are you just smarter than we are or just luckier?
Shouldn't have to fix a new saw and honestly I've had several 10-20 year old stihls and every one of them would start cold in 3 or 4 pulls every time

I bought my Husqvarna 460 Rancher already well-used. If I follow all of the steps in this vid for cold and warm starts, it starts every time. Just now, I started mine up after about 2 years of sitting with ethanol fuel in it. I mixed some fresh ethanol free and replaced the old fuel with it first, mind you. It took, maybe 4 pulls on choke. Sometimes you have to clean the plug a bit and all the usual, more frequent maintenance you should expect with small engines plus chain sharpening, but it's a great quality product. There's a reason Poulan began making their chainsaws orange recently (they gave green a bad rep). When I saw that they had done this, I also noticed that all the orange Poulan displays on the shelf were used chainsaws that the store must have received as returns.

Husqvarna bought out Poulan, hence is where Poulan Pro line came from... ALL Saw manufactures have a low-end.. or "home owner" saw, not meant for heavy use. Poulan and Husqys under $300 fall in this "occasional light use" The 460 is technically a Professional Saw, classed in the "intermediate" category of saws. I too have a 460, which out performs my dads stilh MS362. If your experienced enough, 24" bars or larger, are very robust with a skip sequence chain i.e. Oregon 72JPX084G (for 24" bar") will cut very fast. If you dont have a lot of time knowledge and experience behind a saw, Use regular sequence chain until you are comfortable with the saw and have learned its likes and dislikes. and Learn how to prevent and react to kickback.
All new saws come with low kickback safety chain, to help protect novice users. Skip chisel chain is more apt to kick back potential, it is not completely avoidable. However if your experienced use a skip chisel chain, that 460 will come alive. Be safe.

Had a super reliable Poulson but it got stolen. Decided to 'Upgrade' to a Husqvarna and the only thing it has done is give me an arm workout. Hasn't started even once. It's going back to Lowes come Monday.
So, when they don't start, what do you do? Mine is around 3 yrs old, and has a total run time around 10 hrs - and gives no 'burp' of trying to start. It has not been abused - oh, and it leaks all the bar oil out into the case whenever it sits.
On the Internet everything is working 😂😂
We have a 6 year old husqvarna 340 and never had any starting problems... even in -25 goes easily with 2-3 pulls and 1 pull warm.
Try to start it warm with one pull to +37C...
As soon I squeeze the gas to get it off a high idle it dies, any ideas?
Lol ya my jonsered ( basically a Husqvarna) never starts this easy. Runs like an animal once you get it going but doesn't start anywhere near as easy as any Stihl saw I've ever had. Not knocking it but it's not the easiest saw to start cold. Once it's warm it's a one pull machine though

Someone should come up with a push button starter. I have the hardest time to start a chain saw, the wife says my arm is to short. according to her that's not all to short.. What can I say I am a old man and short.
pull cord until you feel a resistance ok.....? well what if your cord barley has any resistance? I can't get this dang thing to start and its brand new a day old.
Was there no compression? I just got one cheap cause it's not running. I think it has no compression. I'm planning on taking it in to get serviced.
Maybe you got it where i bought mine, you buy them as new but are not, then you realize they may have wiped them off but thats it. Thus they insist on putting gas mixture in and bar oil. Ha ha

We bought one of these and we have spent more time "trying to start it"
then we have ever spent actually cutting wood with it. Our model doesn't have an air discharge bulb but other than that it looks the same. This was the worst investment we ever made. I like how they say in the video to push the chain brake forward (but he pulls it back into engage chain mode). I am going shopping.
I save $80 by not buying another Stihl saw. What a bad decision.

The correct way should put right foot on the other side (board side) of the handle, hold the top bar with right hand, and pull the starting string with left hand. This way the right foot with right hand provide a firm grasp of the saw to pull the starting string.

In my experience, those decompression valves combined with the choke lead to hopelessly flooded saws if the weather is anywhere above 40 degrees or so.
Instructions unclear. I accidentally cut my metal gate. Now it has a scratch.
I have a husqvarna 545 mark 2 and I spend more time pulling on it than it running, so much trouble starting, might try spraying some either in it, husqvarna is junk.
I could never get mine started. I have bought cheap saws this whole time and they lasted for years and years. Well, I had a little more change in my pocket and decided to go with a name brand. It is hit or miss I guess, but a pain in the butt. I have a friend who owns a lawn business and he can't get the thing started. So now I have to go through hoops to get this defective item exchanged. Hopefully the next one will start...when I get it in a few months.

Same here, 92 or 93 octane only, and JASO FD and or ISO GD rated 2 cycle mix., I use Lucas Safeguard.. Lucas 2 cycle etc. ... mine starts cold or hot, 1 pull every time. I also.. even when not using my saws, I start them at a minimum of once a week and idle them for 1 to 3 minuets.
I have never heard of using 93 octane - is that in the manual?
Rick Merrill You’re not supposed to run ethanol through any small, carbureted engine unless it’s specifically rejetted for its used. Otherwise, 93 octane MINimum.
I have been using "tru fuel" at 40:1 for several years. 93 octane I have not done. Thanks Joe.
TrueFuel happens to be 92 octane, and that is what I use.
@rubio66 I have had the same problem. I purchased an E series 235, the first saw would not start at all, then I got a second saw of the same model and the saw started once and would never start again. Not sure what the problem was, I just gave up on that brand and entirely.
I have an older 350 model purchased in 2001 or 02 and I have had issues starting it ever since. Once its running its fine but starting it is another issue. I have had it serviced a couple of times and nothing has ever really fixed the issue.

I have one of those as well. No option available. Usually smaller engine so less pull required. We just have to work with what we have. Still smaller saws don't need one.

Lol... You guys that are complaining it will not start, know nothing about the saw! I have had Husky and Stihl products for years, in a tree service. Husky may be hard to start UNTIL, you learn the saw, how to use the darn thing. It is easy as heck. They will fire right up every time.
They cut through wood like its butter. You got to know how to maintain and USE the saw. Until you understand the saw, you wasting your time. I have models 235 and a 450, which are OLD ones. Hell I have had that 235 for over 10 years, the 450 about 8. BOTH, start right up and STILL cut like razor's.
In comparison to Sthil products, Husky's cut a little faster, and do not lose compression when you turn it sideways. In other words, the 450 is GREAT for dropping and felling medium size trees. That 235 is limber if I ever had one, just zips right through branches that are small or medium small.
Those are the only 2 saws, I let no one touch other than myself.
As for the guy that said if you buy a Husky, you are getting a Poulan, BALONEY! Poulan is FRENCH, Husky is NOT. Poulan is probably one of the most dangerous saws produced. You better off using a weed-wacker. That saw had so many different ways that you could injure yourself it was ridiculous. I think they are made in China now...not dependable.
Also, the person in the video IS engaging the chain brake. You see him flick his wrist and it moves forward! Duh!! I wonder...how many have put some serious hours on chain saws...because if you have, you would know, this is a dependable product that will last you forever if you take care of it.
Just spent 9 hours today with my 450 dropping some big dead doug firs, de-liming , and cutting 16" sections. damn I love that Saw. Starts up everytime. No issues and she comes with her own quirks so I'm the only one that can start er up right away. It might be love. I wouldn't care what most of these people on here say about chainsaws. They don't even know the difference between jumping a tree and dropping a tree. I've watched my buddies jump really small trees in their back yards when it could have been an easy drop just because they watched me jump a big one to clear some distance. Truth is none of them can make a living dropping trees and if they tried they would be the only guys out their without a Stihl or Husqvarna. They'd also be going through chainsaws every few months as well if they get lucky and have the saws last that long.
i just picked up an old Husky 44 at the dump today; covered in grease,dust & dog fur-it had been neglected for years.Probably because it was "hard to start". Unlike other saws, the recoil pull needs to be pulled up to compression then a short pull & off! All i had to do was dump old gas out, clean the plug & air filter & "aeriate" by pulling recoil cord a few times, let her sit for a minutes to evaporate last nasty old gas. Fresh gas & she was off; lubed the linkage 'cause the trigger was sticking. I've since cleaned her up a bit, she's a beauty! i still chuckle at my good fortune; when i step outdoors for a smoke, i start her up again. It's sounding better & better-love that old saw!

use pre mix 50:1 gas you prolly mixed gas wrong. Its the the brand its the user. I got a 450 rancher and fires in 2 pulls. Trick? New fuel filter / lines and spark plug and VP pre mix . 50:1
At the start of the video the narrator says, "Push the chain brake forward". However, he is then seen to pull the chain brake back! With my new Husqvarna 135 (which will not even splutter) that wouldrelease the chain brake. Is it different in the USA?
Graham Boyd the chain break is on at that part of the video. He deactivated it by pulling it back an then reactivates it by pushing it forward with the back of his hand.

I didn't need to step on it or have Popeye arms to start my Homelite. A piece of- yes, but got the job done. Pull starting this thing tires me out before I start cutting.

I don't think I would buy a new one ... don't need it. Mine is about 18 years old. Since I'm retired with a good supply of seasoned firewood, it hasn't been used for six years. Had to take down a couple of small maples too close to the house and the damn thing fired right up. Had a STIHL that I could never get started. I'll keep my old Husky.
My 350 Husqvarna has no Prime pump and the saw has been sitting for a long time unused I now Cannot start it
i agree, but i feel as though the reason they have not already made them easier to operate is because they don't want for someone under qualified to use the device. (such as a child)

Is it normal, when i push the handguard forward, there is a loud cluck? So this confuse me a lil bit, cause i'm not sure, if i break something 🤔

I bought this chainsaw yesterday. I've tried to start it 5 times now, giving up each time. I can't believe it can be so difficult to start. I've followed the instructions and watched the guy at the shop start it.
Don't buy this chainsaw unless you have a degree in motor mechanics.

I have a Husky 435 - same thing - horrible to start. And 5-6 pumps?? You'll be pulling the plug and drying it out. There should be a recall on these things. I'll never buy Husqvarna again. My old 266 is easier to start.
I've bought a Husquarna chainsaw 41 series about 6 years ago, I let me tell you this saws are the biggest piece of crap I've ever seen. The only thing that can get my saw running each and every time is a complete tear down and re-assembly of the carb and a fresh plug. Each time after use, I rum the saw out of gas, however a week later I can pull the rope a hundred times without it wanting to start. Buy a cheap big bow saw, at least they start every time!!!
If you can get ethanol free fuel where you live that will help a lot. I still think Husqvarna's are hard starting so don't think I'm making an excuse I just had the same issues you are having on my garden tractor until I switched to ethanol free fuel. Every time I went to run it I'd have to tear the carb down it was a huge pain in the butt
I have 5 Husqvarna: three 455 a 450, and a 141. The 141 I got today at auction for 40 bucks. Filth ey girl she was. Gas was mud oil was water sludge. Gave her better than a hookers bath flushed all tanks and would you believe the 99 year model saw was like new? She fired perfect on 93 octain. I mean bam she started.
All my saws have started easy except on one occasion on one of the 455...not sure why but the issue went away.
I was cutting way above average. No artificial heat in the house for 5 years ..two stove.

I've never been able to start my brand new Husqvarna chainsaw. Have had it to the repair shop twice still doesn't start. Always brand new fresh gas, new plug
141 Husqvarna doesn't have primer bulb or the top button just have choke pull out that's it...
Best way to start it is to buy a different brand. Spend the money and buy a Stihl. I have the Husqvarna 440 and it’s a POS. Good luck getting it to start.

The most they may is maybe 30.00 dollars? I have had a 460 ranger for 4 years now , it kicks ass, put a sthil rapid cut chain on the husky bar, and you will be amazed how it cut's.
Sort of having trouble starting my 440e. My Chinese chainsaw starts right up all the time.
Ive run both stihl and Husqvarna... once you go Husqy, you'll never stilh again.. all my Husqvarna equipment starts with one pull, every time. Cold or Hot starts. If your using the proper rated JASO FD and or ISO GD rated 2 cycle oil, mixed with 92 octane 50:1 ( 2.6 oz to 3.0 oz of 2 cycle oil per 1 gallon of gasoline) and the carb is tuned properly it will start within two pulls, 3 to 6 pulls for beginners, 2 to 3 for intermediate, 1 pull for Professionals.
If you cant get your saw started, you are not doing something correctly, and or, service and maintenance is not being done on proper intervals.
my fathers stilhs take about 3 to 6 pulls regardless.. and Ive tuned them myself as I do my Husqvarna's The Husqy will also out cut and out perform a stilh of equal power ratio class.
I have a new Husquvarna which i have used about 10 times since june 2013 it takes about 7 pulls to start each time even if i stop the saw and then try to start it straight away its a hassell to start again any ideas anyone?
hard starting,,, check low speed card adjustment... prolly needs to be turned out ever slightly..

Cold starting problem is way more of a task than they lead on to be. I wouldn''t buy another. Maybe its the 10% ethanol gas that seems to be mandated in our gas but the product should handle that.

nope, this one starts totally at random. I keep following the steps but it fires when it feels like it.
Lesson learned - for the price on one Husq it's better to buy 3 cheap Chinese saws for much shorter individual operational life but at triple failure redundancy.
BigSmartArmed that is where mine is. Lose a whole day of chores when it decides not to start. My Stihl products rarely need new plugs or maintenance. I am so pissed I spent 800 bucks on this thing. I dont have time to learn the nuances of a tool, when another company has one that fires up 100% of the time.

I used my new Husqvarna 236 for the first time today on a light job. I stopped for a break, checked fuel, chain lubricant + tension. Since then I haven't been able to start it. I've tried the various troubleshooting procedures, followed up on tips... Nothing. I'm stumped.
This is new today and I've put it away with the job half completed, thinking about taking it back to the dealer already - which I loath to do at this stage.

Brand new saw. Well over 100 pulls barley a bark out of this thing. No I didn't buy it at Lowe's I purchased mine from the local equipment supply store. What a piece of crap. I've owned a few McCullough and a few stihl saws never had a problem with one brand new like this. Horrible quality control? Reminds me of the poulan my buddy bought that I laughed at him about and now it's me looking stupid because I trusted a Husqvarna.
