I’m ok with Megatron as a tank. It makes sense. He is still half gun and he can move on his own. If we can’t get the G1 gun mode I feel a tank is the next best option
As nifty as the original toy was, him turning into a hand-held weapon was just ridiculous. I couldn't take him seriously. "LET THE SLAUGHTER BEGIN . . . ! Somebody hold me!" Now, a TANK: that's some serious power and badassery, right there, and it makes complete sense for the character.
Yep the tank alt mode sort of works better cause Mega can fight without someone else and his cybetronian mode was a tank to begin with so it just fits. Unless he becomes a moble canon like Shockwave he should be a tank or heavy space cruiser like form.
I'm a G1 fan, so gun mode is always gonna have a soft spot in my heart. But making him a tank is a good, sensible solution. It sort of preserves the idea that Megatron is essentially a self contained weapon of mass-autobot-destruction whose alt mode largely exists to boost his already extreme firepower, and also makes him more versatile and autonomous in combat.
I like the idea of both. The gun is also psychological to his troops. They follow Megatron because he lends them HIS power, but ultimately he commands. The tank is basically a mobile gun.
Exactly, I mean a tank is just a big mobile gun, so it’s perfect for him as he wouldn’t have to be held by his minions, because I feel like that would get weird after 30 years
In school, I had Megatron. Several of us did. We used to pretend to shoot each other at playtime. Even our principal would borrow one and pretend to shoot us, too. Good times.
That's great! It took me long to have Megatron toys r us, childworld, kaybees toy store always sold out Megatron Gun, Then I went to a local shop C.H Martin I didn't know there was a toys section in the store. I was too busy playing Spy Hunter the arcade game in the front of the store near the cashier's, I saw a mother buying her son a He-Man toy, I was excited I ran to the toys section there were two Megatron's left , I sed to myself DAM! I have no money I spent all my money playing Spy Hunter, I ran home I saw 2 rolled up quarters my mom's laundry money, My Dad saw me and said we are doing the laundry, I asked him " can you buy me Megatron toy it's at CH Martin please now? There's 2 left Dad" he sed NO next time, I was so angry and pissed off, After doing laundry, My friends and I visited CH Martin I checked no more Megatron sold out, I never bought Megatron brand new from a box I traded an Nintendo game for Megatron Without the scope.
The image of megatron as a gun needing to be held, aimed and trigger pulled by someone taught me at a young age that a gun, though a deadly weapon, is just a tool, like a knife or axe. It all depends on who's holding the gun, and how they use it.
Handgun, tank, jet, helicopter. I personally believe that it doesn't matter what exactly Megatron's alt-mode is, as long as it's powerful and dangerous.
I always liked when Prime wielded Megatron in G1. It was as if we could glimpse what could've been had these two been allies (or even friends): A unstoppable force for good in the universe.
Being a tank is probably the only best alternate mode for Megatron, although Galvatron transforming into a giant cannon is also another great form that could've fit for Megatron as well. I'm also a huge fan of the IDW comics too, and Megatron had a kickass redesign when he took on the form of a stealth bomber (though I hated the fact he used a rail gun and not a fusion cannon). The thing for me is that while these alternate forms are great, they're not unique to Megatron. To me, I'll always associate a tank mode with guys like Blitzwing and Warpath. The cannon was unique to Galvatron, and thus I associate it with him (even if they're technically the same character). The fighter jet was a form that many characters took on, but Starscream always comes to mind first when I think of it. And of course, anyone would think of Optimus Prime anytime they see or think of a truck first and foremost before any other character that has that form (ie: Motormaster). So, when we're talking about Megatron in this sense....he'll always be a handgun, first and foremost, to me. That was the unique part of his form was that, despite being one of the most powerful and feared transformers around, his form was practically useless if he had nobody to weild him- he had to rely on someone trustworthy. I liked that.
There is something symbolic about Megatron, the Leader of the Decepticons, having to be used by one of his underlings. Not just the trust matter, but the idea that he is making himself a servant, reducing himself to beneath those he leads. It is, ironicly, a positive leadership trait, and likely why, despite his autocratic command style, he has the loyalty of those like Soundwave, in a society based entirely on strength.
Cops shoot kids wielding nintendo controller, i don't think it's safe to give them realistical looking toy guns. Besides, toy guns can qnd have been used in robberies.
ARX 351 Still, the gun didn’t shoot the kids, the cop did. Still, the gun didn’t do the robbery, the people did... What is your point? Even if the gun was all orange it could still be spray painted by its user to take on black and grey accents. It’s the user, not the tool.... If we want any problem to go away (shootings included) we need to look within ourselves, and change what’s the root of all this... changing the tools will do no difference, because “evil” finds a way.
Bryan Whyte I suppose, I can see the merit in those things. Yet even before paper existed human being bashed in each other’s heads for some tasty berries Violence will unfortunately forever be apart of our lives... it’s sad... but the only thing we can do is acknowledge the violence, then teach our children why it’s bad... teach them the values of human life. Gun violence will never go away, but it doesn’t have to be this prominate. Look at the 50s for example. Gun laws were less strict back then, yet they had soooo few mass shootings compared to today. Flash forward to today and gun laws are more strict, yet gun violence is up HUGE. So it must be something, if it isn’t the guns... then what is it? Us... perhaps...
Now that I think about it Megatron truning into a gun is really ironic. He wants power to dominate others but needs someone else to use his greatest power.
People always ask why starscream didn't destroy megatron, Because not only would megatron just break free, but if starscream did he would most likely be killed for treason
I grew up with all 3 (G1 gun, armada tank, and space jets) and my favorite is probably the Armada tank and movie space jet is #2 bc the show armada was really good and the space jet made looked pretty nice. I like G1, but in it I like when Megatron fights as Megatron rather than the gun. Megatron as Tank or Jet makes for interesting fights that usually involve ramming vehicle modes
jgfjgfify nah he is an easy target to crush and/or get snapped in half in gun mode, most his of modern alt modes fit him better, and you’re blinded by nostalgia
I'd love to see a Megatron who, when in gun mode, completely overtakes the consciousness of whoever's holding him, be it Decepticon OR Autobot. That way he doesn't need to rely on the potentially inferior skills of whoever's using him, he doesn't have to worry about being misused (I.E. Starscream holding him and "accidentally" sabotaging his plans with him), and it adds an extra element of tension for the odd chance an Autobot is forced to handle him to take care of a greater threat. If Optimus has to use him, there's the possibility of Megatron taking over his mind, and all Optimus has to go on that Megatron WON'T is his WORD. O_O "Guns don't kill people; *_I_* DO!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!"
THAT is an interesting take on a way his gun mode could be used in the future. IDW tried something similar but different and it caused Jazz to end up killing a human.
There was a toy in the RiD 2001 line that transformed into a giant head (since it was originally designed for the Beast Machines line) and could fit onto Fortress Maximus to accomplish just that.
An easy compromise would to start a series on cybertron, with a cybertronian tank-megatron. Have Megatron get a gun alt-mode when he is on earth, but only release the tank toy.
Perhaps a Megatron figure could be engineered to transform into a more bazooka-like form for another figure to hold, rather than as a prop for the owner?
It likely is due to the fact that during G1 there were not laws in many countries which now prohibit toys from looking like real weapons. So it is easier to make gun Megatron be weird non-metallic colors while having lazer canon Galvatron having metallic colors is fine.
I grew up with the gun mode. I understand making him have a vehicle mode but I like that not every single Transformers isn’t a vehicle or animal. I like that some turn into cassette players or microscopes or weapons. Megatron being a gun makes him unique. Plus I’m old school.
Eh, I honestly hate the movie designs. They feel so robbed of everything that made the characters cool. Like Starscream, he's just some bland gray jet. I mean, I miss the cool blues and reds he used to have, and his treachery! Where was the treachery?! The first 3 movies all he was was a suck up! But that's only half of what Starscream is! He's a suck up to hide his treacherous schemes! As for Megatron, it feels like they just wanted to make him look "more scary." But the thing is, you don't need to make him look super scary, Megatron is plenty scary on his own!
Never been a fan of mass displacement and him turning into a gun that he then has Starscream, of all people, hold. Transformers Devastation had the perfect G1 Megatron - looks like the classic design, but he turns into a more practical tank that still focuses on being a big gun on wheels. I think tank Megatron is the ideal way to go to capture the feel of the original but give him a more viable alt-mode.
Having grown up with Energon, Animated, Prime and the 2007 movie, the jet is my personal favorite alt mode for Megatron. Since one of the most defining characteristics of the Decepticons is their ability to fly, it would make sense why their leader would transform into a jet. Plus, he's able to move faster from one place to another by soaring the skies, than if he was a tank or a gun, while still being able to blast others mid-flight.
Great account. Always thought Megatron would have been a bit more imposing in animation and the comics if he could get around under his own steam rather than having to be carried by his troops (even though in the cartoons he could fly in robot mode). As a tank, Megatron looks well-suited, while still retaining the gun component. One other thing- Galvatron's hand-held gun mode was shown at least once in the 1986 U.K. comic story 'Target 2006', where he is shown inside of Cyclonus.
Thanks. I like the idea of both modes. Each has their merit in a LOT of ways. I made the mistake in this video for Galvatron, but I made sure I addressed that when I did my Galvatron Retrospective.
I remember an 11 year old ME, walking around with a gun mode Megatron in my waist, back in 1985. Cant lie. That got me into trouble a couple of times. Nowadays, I would get smoked by some convenient store owner, cop or neighborhood vigilante, so I totally understand the gun toy laws. With that said, my vote is for G1 gun alt mode Megatron for life.
Yeah I can understand why toy gun laws changed and maybe it's because I live outside USA but it's kinda amusing that legislators in America can change toy gun laws overnight when a tragedy happens but there have been mass shootings occurring for decades yet the NRA is so powerful over there that the laws surrounding real guns are as good as untouchable. The irony is that a person in America can more easily get their hands on a real gun than they can get a toy gun.
@@Nagatem That's not a bad idea. I used to own the Megatron that turned into a Nerf gun (for which I was perfectly happy with) likewise the original Galvatron (come on Hasbro/Takara you really should do a Masterpiece version of him sometime soon) toy not only turn into a space age laser cannon, but also a space age style ray gun. So really they could still make him into a gun, just not one that exists in real life. That said though as cool and edgy in having Megs turn into a P38 is to some people (myself included) may be, it is at the end of the day a little silly, I mean think about it if Megs is the Leader of the Decepticons, right so why would he turn himself into something as lowly as a weapon? This would put him into a potentially vulnerable position, especially if he were to keep on putting himself into the hands of a certain Air Commander we all know and love, if you get what I mean... That said however, you could say that Megatron sort of did it to truant Starscream in the sense that Megs would put himself into his second in commands hands whereby Star would see it as a chance to snap his leader in two on his knee, however he would also know that if he attempt to do so Megs would simply turn back into robot mode and kill him. This I will add is my head canon with regards to the characters. The tank mode on the other hand is in fact the mode I grew up with, not due to the more recent versions of TF but rather with the G2 toys, although I'm a G1 fan though and though, (I started watching Transformers thanks to re runs on Sky One's 'The Fun Factory' and I used to have a few second hand toys, books and annuals, plus the VHS of the 1986 movie to boot) the sort lived G2 line you could say were 'my' Transformers as a boy (I wasn't all that keen on Beast Wars though, in fact it was quite a while before I found that it was related to Transformers at all!) I didn't have the G2 Megatron at the time (I do now) but he always was a figure that I wanted, among others... The tank mode, which I feel is fairly reasonable it certainly suits the character, plus in the G2 comic he is in fact the SAME Megatron from the G1 comics who had been repaired by Cobra in return for a few bits of scrap, for which they see as cutting edge tech (well we are talking about an advanced alien race here, their trash would surely blow our minds) in order to fight GI Joe with, so in a way that is also a variant of sorts, of the original Megs, with that in mind I am kind of stuck in the middle, I'm not all that keen when Hasbro have Megatrons that look like the G1 version in their robot modes, but then they can only turn into a tank, in a way I feel like its cheating fans and I'd even say that it's mocking fans who cannot afford the Masterpiece versions or to be able to afford to get one from overseas (unless they live in Japan) plus the fee to bribe custom officials to 'look the other way' when bringing it into nations where the figure is banned. That kind of behaviour ticks me off. As it stands I do own the MP 36, so as far as I see things I've (sort of) got a G1 Megatron, in a way, so I'm fine. PS If I've inadvertently made anyone envious of me for owning a MP 36 then I'm sorry for making you feel that and you have my sympathies, who knows maybe you'll have better luck on the other side eh....
@shtarrin .......had those many, MANY times. Who doesn't know the difference between a toy gun and a real gun??? Even at distance, the weights are wrong......what fool draws a real gun on a child with, clearly, a toy in his hand??? What fool justifies such a rash action??? "Well it looked real, so I shot him before he could point that light-plastic-looking thing in my direction,....I mean, it could have been loaded, he could have shot me,...you know, with a b.b., or pellet, or cap-gun smoke." PEACE family.
@@Xonatron hi Matthew..if you Google it you will see in the prologue issue you see cyclonus and scourge in their alt modes in 1986 earth having time jumped back from 2006 and Galvatron is in his pistol mode sitting in cyclonus cockpit....and I HIGHLY recommend you seek out the full "Target 2006" story ..it's AMAZING and you WONT be disappointed.
This is a damn good question for Transformer fans. I've thought about this before. Obviously gun mode is gone and not coming back, Tank mode is not bad and it does suet Megatron well. I never liked Megs as a jet, Just wrong. But I do have another option. You see I always preferred Megatron over Gavatron but really liked Galvatron's cannon mode. Why not give Megatron a similar cannon mode? I first got the idea after reading issue 12 (I think it was 12) of the original Marvel comics. The Decepticon leader Lord Straxus back on Cybertron transformed into a really cool looking cannon and I thought that would be great for Megatron.
rogue9ine so you’re saying it’s far more acceptable for the character to be a freaking TANK, capable of utterly demolishing whatever’s in their path or scopes, but a pistol with 1/10,000th destructive power is wrong?
I never said anything about anything being "acceptable". Toy makers today are not going to make a toy to sell to children that looks like a realistic firearm. A toy tank on the other hand they will. A toy tank will always look like a toy, A toy gun has the potential to look very real. When Hasbro designs these characters the plan is to make something they can sell.
If the purpose and actual question is.. "should we remove the concept of mass-shifting" then you have to also consider characters like Soundwave. Who also transforms into a tape recorder. For that reason... no. I don't think we should. I could imagine a scene in a movie where a human politician needs to be escorted by a Decepticon inside a courtroom (to be under Megatron's surveillance) and Soundwave picks a nearby object to transform into that the human could carry. Maybe the tape recorder can also be used to read the mind of a human ( similar to powers that Soundwave had in the cartoon )
To me he will always transform to a handgun because thats what I seen as a small child and its stuck in my mind forever. And in the g1 show he rarely transformed, but when he did you knew somthing big was about to happen.
I remember seeing a Megatron Toy where he turned into the original Gun mode and a Tank mode. So I would prefer Megatron to be a triple changer that transforms into a gun for nostalgia and a Tank as an upgrade and to keep the theme that he is a weapon of war and violence
Megatron's original alt mode is his most iconic. Yes, times have changed, and so has society. And with the high level of gun violence, it's sensible to change his alt mode to stealth bomber, a tank.... But to me, Megatron is a GUN!
Agreed and honestly I'm worried shockwave and Megatron may never be guns again but if they were to turn into let's say a blaster from starwars or any sci-fi gun we could be golden.
First off nice to see a clip from the Man From U.N.C.L.E. Nice seeing how the actual gun looked in the series and yep that is Megatron alright. If anything through all his incarnations Megs has been given some badass forms no matter a jet, tank, gun, triple/multi-changer. To me it is a no brainer that they should keep him as a hand held weapon from time to time. Other than the Target Masters and a couple Minicon teams, he is the only transformer that I know of that had to be operated by another Transformer in alt. form, as far as weapons, in the cartoon. Even if he has been a tank for the most part throughout the years, his gun mode is his most iconic mode in my opinion.
When I was in elementary school in the 80's, the teacher asked us to bring in any toy guns we had to be used as props for an assembly honoring veterans. I brought in Megatron in gun mode with all the accessories. I felt like I was sneaking in a robot toy under the pretense of it only being a toy gun. With the original toy, you could take the gun accessories and combine them into a canon, which was something never shown in the cartoon. The comic book with Slick, was one of three Transformer comic books I ever got.
I'm fine with him as a tank or a gun. Anything else I don't care for much. It's amazing that in the 50-70's kids ran around with real working bb guns and never got shot by police, but today's cops who are so much better trained can't seem to manage it. The real stupidity of American gun laws came full circle to me the first time I walked into a shooting range and saw a florescent purple hand gun for sale that looked every inch a child's toy, despite being a real, functioning firearm.
The probably happened quite a bit back in the day, but there was not social media to boost the incidents worldwide before an investigation was carried out and concluded (they started putting orange tips and bright plastic on BB guns and toys for a reason after all, and in a lot of the police incidents, that tip has been cut off)
Meanwhile here in europe we dont have those american toy laws, even if i live in nation where semi automatic and fully automatic rifles are legal for civilian use. I personally own M4 BB gun (owned it sine i was 14 so 6 years now) and it doesnt require the orange tip or bright colours. Tho we do make sure, just with commen sense, that we dont show those realistic looking BB guns in public.
Younger generations MAY criticize the alt mode of a gun, but I say it was one of the most innovative things to occur ever in cartoons and that was back in the 80s. Today either they fail at innovation or fail at abusing nostalgia incorrectly. If Travis Knight has a sequel, I really wouldn't mind Megatron turning into a Tank, but there's something about that pew pew gun that really made the 80s something special!
How was that innovation? They brought over a toy gun from another toyline in Japan and called it the leader. It doesn’t make sense, and there’s a reason people criticize it.
I started watching the original cartoon midway the first season and I was always curious what Megatron's alt mode was. I was actually disappointed when it was revealed to be a gun because I felt I it didn't really fit him. If Travis Knight makes another Transformers movie, he would still have to listen to Hasbro, and no way Hasbro would let Megatron be a gun again.
@@CayeDaws the funniest part is that the toy megs originally was, is probably the weakest of the gun formers from that line, both the .357 magnum and browning hi-power looked much better and menacing as robots imo
Since i understand the negative connotations of toy gun in the modern day, the silver tank is the best alternative, mainly because playing as him in the War/Fall of Cybertron videogames felt and looked so awesome. And its basically still a giant cannon as you mentioned.
Not gonna lie, my favorite Megatron, in terms of transformation, is Robots in Disguise (2000) Megatron, who was a six-changer with robot, dragon, jet, tank, bat, and flying-claw mode, iirc. (In terms of character, Beast Wars and Prime Megatron are easily the best written, but I like the idea of him being so enormously powerful).
In truth. Megatron's gun alt mode made him more terrifying than his Tank Alt mode. Why? Because anyone can use it. Anyone. Even though Megatron is never seen being the one to sit around and wait (which I know I can be called out on that opinion). If Megatron could play the long game and warp the minds of humans. Suddenly could take over the Earth through a massive war. To witch Megatron and his "Merry Robots" could just show up and "Rescue" the humans from destroying themselves. All to end up having a slave race to mind the resources they need to make energon. And even kill all humans. Though the reason Megatron's alt mode was changed. The really bad light and stereotyping and stigma that a gun has. Any gun violence that happens. Everyone blames the gun. Never blames the person wielding it. Though also. This is Megatron. He is a Leader. He is a egotistical dictator. Really it is kind of stupid for him to be used by others. So that is why he has a Tank Alt Mode now. HE controls his own abilities. Not allowing some fool or a human just pull the trigger. After all. Humanity blames the object before the person. Besides cars have killed more human beings than any gun. Yet people like the Autobots...who are mostly cars. *Megatron is confused by this*
"Besides cars have killed more human beings than any gun." Whoever told you that was an idiot. Not as big as you believing him. WWI killed 16,5 million people. WWII killed 72,5 million people. That's 89 million dead just in the two world wars. According to "Deaths in Wars of the 20th Century" by Milton Leitenberg, Cornell College (always state your sources), 41 million people died worldwide in military conflicts from 1945 to 2000 (the 55 years after WWII ended). 2,5 million people died in wars all over the world before 1914 (WWI). The same source claims 187 million people died in wars in the 20th century alone (1900-2000). Are you trying to tell me more than 187 million people worldwide have died in cars?? You wouldn't even be correct in regards to the U.S. where there were 39,773 deaths by firearm in 2017. The same year 37,133 died in motor vehicle deaths. Mind you that's in a country "at peace" (debatable) one can only imagine how bad it is in the war zones of the world.
@@paulallen8109 not all war deaths are gunshots the usual phrasing of what he is trying to say is cars have killed more people than mass shootings have
At Dollar General yesterday, I picked up 4 different black/orange tip assault rifles w/electronic sfx. And a couple Pistols w/ extra mags. Why care if he’s a gun? We train our youth to use them in times of war. What’s to stop an EVIL EVIL person from painting the tips of their very real guns orange? “But... it had an orange tip!!!”
The moment I layed eyes on G1 megatron for the first time I thought "ok, with that large cannon on his arm, his destructive nature and his over all appearance, this clearly transforms into a tank." Not once did I ever expect him to be a gun. Armada was the first transformers show I ever layed eyes on when I was still a kid and that probably influenced what I thought megatons alt mode should be.
Megatron has always been about war, so why not make him a gun? maybe not the dated earth handgun but a cybertronian BFG as a third alt mode from now on. Id love to see that more often
Im just never never going to see Megatron nothing other than a gun. G1 was the beginning and thats just how it is. Hes a gun. The older 30s and especially guys like me in the 40s seem to be more accepting than the other younger generation. And I think I know where your heart stands Roddy! Great video sir!
I'll always be partial to his gun mode, an interesting dynamic with having to let others use him, and his cool design will always make it my preference. However, toy laws being how they are, I think the tank is the most natural progression.
No, and I'm a G1 fan. I'm a child of the '80's, I watched the original cartoon as a kid, Optimus Prime was my hero, and I cried my eyes out when he died in Transformers: The Movie. It was *always* silly that the most dangerous and menacing of the Decepticons had to be fired by someone else. And it's not a sign of trust in his troops: he kept having *Starscream* among all his Decepticons fire him? Starscream, always scheming and waiting for a shot to usurp him? Whom he finally reduced to dust in the animated movie? His real concern when transformed into his alt mode was blasting Autobots and anything in his way and Starscream (and Soundwave) were usually conveniently nearby, being high-ranked Decepticons. I pretty much agree with the update of turning him into a tank. Giving Megatron autonomy in his alt mode is just proper for the franchise's main villain. Alternatively, Megatron/Galvatron's transformation into a cannon also works. In the sense that he's immobile (but firing himself) but ultra-powerful, it's a pretty good statement of his character that his alt mode is *purely* a weapon, an instrument of complete destruction. He blasts stuff in his alt mode- that's all he does. It's perfect. I gotta draw your attention to 17:40. His Cybertronian form on the left, as a tank, was based on his appearance in the War for Cybertron video game. The brilliance of that design is that it's not just a tank but it looks like the entire vehicle was built around his cannon. Yeah, okay, tanks are pretty much vehicles built around their main guns, that's their point, but tanks are built with a hull and turret in mind first. War for Cybertron Megatron, as a Cybertronian tank, was basically a cannon that they added stuff to just so it looks like it can move. And it's in that sense that this version of Megatron is a pretty good update that also recalls his original form as a Walther P38-style gun. It's got the best of both old and new. I do disagree, though, with his depictions as some sort of flying vehicle because they add an element of lightness and flimsiness to him. Those are not things you associate with Megatron, even if originally only Decepticons could fly.
@@ChangedMyNameFinally69 This is Megatron we're talking about. He's not exactly subtle to begin with. He doesn't sneak or hide; he dominates the battle. Leave mobility to the Seekers and stealth to Soundwave- the actual Decepticon spy- and Soundwave's cassettes, namely Laserbeak and Ravage.
@@ChangedMyNameFinally69 In a similar vein, all G1 Decepticons could fly. As such, what's the point of Seekers turning into Earth aircraft or cybertronian spacecraft? Because they'd fly better- faster, more efficient, etc.
@@RodimusPrimal Frankly I thought the Walter mode didn't really fit Megatron, the leader of the Decepticons and one of the most powerful Transformers! His alt-mode is!.....A pistol that he can't even control and had to be used by another person or Transformer. Yeah that's not a very good alt mode. I think a tank fits him better, makes him seem all around powerful and dosen't make him essentially useless in his alt-mode without the assistance of another bot or person.
Since I grew up wathing transformers prime, I still think his look and alt. Mode in that show is the best, but that doesn't mean I don't like his other alt. Modes and looks. ALL HAIL MEGATRON!!!!!!
When you're a gun, the enemy can barely shoot at you. You have a better chance to be the last bot standing, especially when you're already so powerful.
Remember weakly the commotion his gun-form caused back in the days. Due to the pistol's realistic look, he was removed from the shelves internationally or just in some countries. If they can edit it to make the look scream "I'm just a toy-gun; you see any detail resembling the real thing??", then they can by all means re-launch the original robot with the classic transform mode. :)
Welker returned to voice Galvatron in Age of Exinction, and Megatron in The Last Knight. Also I personally think his transformations in the Combiner Wars was the best of both worlds, making him a triple changer that allowed him to be a tank as well as a powerful rifle.
Great video! Thanks, Rodimus! I have mixed feelings. I like him as a gun, but the tank works as well. I'm also a fan of Animated so a flying form doesn't bother me much. Maybe its because Megatron is more about his personality than his alt mode. Maybe he would work as a triple changer where one of his alt modes is a gun?
I'm surprised Starscream never thought to brake Megatron in two while using him in gun mode. No more Megatron and immediate respect/fear from the other Decepticons. I mean, HE'D HAVE SNAPPED THE MIGHTY MEGATRON IN TWO LITERALLY WITH HIS BARE HANDS!!! I bet that'd earn him some brownie points. 😆😆😆
Personally I’ve always like his Animated Helicopter alt. form and I thought the idea of using the rotors as swords was awesome. Also while it’s trivial at best, Bayformers Galvatron’s truck mode will be appearing in the upcoming Sonic movie as a Mobile Command Center/Lab being helmed by Robotnik. Clearly a fate worse then death
I feel there are many ways Hasbro could get around the issue of selling a toy gun, but they're probably too lazy to do so. I mean, these guys own nerf and are scared of transforming Megatron into a gun. They also make cybertronian modes for multiple characters so I don't see what the problem is with just changing the look just enough to make it look alien and label it as cybertronian. But I feel the absolute easiest solution is to add a little more red to the gun mode. You can have the tip of the barrel be orange or red to make it clear it's a toy, and red is a color that Megatron has in his color palette. Idk, I just feel there are so many ways they could make it work without it being a problem.
Megatron's alt-mode was a Walther P38 with extensions and optics. It was a fictional gun used in an episode from the 60's spy-series The Man from U.N.C.L.E., then sold as a japanese Diaclone toy, and then Hasbro formed the story around him for Decepticon leader. I always liked the complications for Megatron's altmode such as the "why," the mass-shifting, the inmobility of his altmode, it was cool.
I've always preferred a gun mode. I feel if we got a cybertonian Gun mode for Megatron (Like Shockwave) we could have his old mode back. I love the tank designs however just as much as his Gun but still miss his old mode.
I say yes. If Soundwave can shrink into a, comparatively small, cassette recorder to gather information, Megatron should transform into a gun. This would demonstrate both Megatron's willingness to kill and his ruthless cunning in corrupting other beings to, essentially, kill in Megatron's name and for the Decepticon cause.
I don't like the whole mass displacement thing. In my ideal TF universe all the bots would be scaled based on their alt modes. (So that the Aerialbots and the Seekers should be the same size in bot mode, as should the Autobot cars, the minicars and the Stunticons). So Megatron as a pistol makes no sense to me. The problem with tanks as alt modes is that usually either the turret doesn't rotate as it should to facilitate transformation, or the turret does rotate at the expense of transformation. I think the best alt mode for Megatron would be an assault gun/self propelled gun. Kind of like a tank with a fixed turret and a cannon that fires forward.
It was one of the better tanks I've seen them do. I still think an assault gun would be a great alt mode. It's a little closer to Galvatron's alt mode and I'd argue in spirit it is a little close to the classic Megatron alt mode. Basically a large tracked gun.
I'm fine with him being whatever- what I'm not okay with is if I'm to buy the Master Piece Gen 1 for $500- those Mfkers are going to open up the box to glue a friggen blasting cap in his barrel. for $500 no one should be opening that box but myself. hell, should be a little cheaper if they gonna pull that crap on US Buyers.
I think triple changer is one of the best compromises for Megatrons alt mode. Since almost every incarnation of him was at one point either a Tank or an aircraft, it has the opportunity to be both. Animated Megatron is also design wise based on Super Megatron from the Japanese G1 continuity, who also had 2 different alt modes. So far the official Bumblebee Movie studio series Megatron is both a triple changer and you can cheat a gun mode
Megatron has had more alt modes than I can count. Unlike most other Transformers characters. I also want to correct you one one thing Rodimus Megatron in the 2001 RID series was a Predacon not a Decepticon.
Yes, the gun is the original. And that orange and blue mockup looks sharp. But given the current state of US culture, it's simply not responsible for Hasbro to produce a gun mode Megatron for the US market. This isn't meant to be political, or get into questions such as gun rights or police brutality. (I really don't care about your opinions of these things, fellow commenters, and have no interest in discussing them here. I'm just taking the current situation as a given, not looking at changes.) But we've seen in recent years at least once case of a police officer shooting a kid with a toy gun built to recent toy laws. And if a trained police officer can make such a mistake, why not civilian gun carriers? (Japan's toy gun laws are different, by the way, because Japan's gun laws and gun culture are different from the US.) Even if Hasbro doesn't care if a customer gets killed for carrying Megatron around in gun mode in public, the possibility of parents suing them over such an incident has to give them pause. Furthermore, tanks, jets, and other options allow Hasbro to make Megatron in his traditional colors.
You know, I think not using prominent classic characters with established gun alt-modes like Megs, Shockwave was a big mistake on Takara/Hasbro's part when trying to revive the Targetmasters. Somehow, I believe it would've made the concept more popular, hell, instead of strictly sticking to established targetmaster characters they could've gone ham and even included some obscure D-listers like Browning or Treadshot or even Kiloton to bolster the Battlemasters' ranks. Considering it's the TF fandom we're talking about, there's gotta be a market for this sort of weird stuff out there and you know it.
Guns are his original signature form, but a tank is just a giant mobile gun so I guess it works, I kinda want to see megatron turn into a sword since they keep giving him swords to run with the whole gladiator motif
Agreed. I watched the first Transformers movie and was disappointed not only with Megatron but also with what they did to Optimus Prime's personality. He seem like a whiny version of himself and the Transformers movie. And they took his line from the 1985 movie and they've been using it everywhere ever since to the point where he's been Flanders and all people think he's about is when he's about to have a showdown with Megatron one shall rise and one shall fall or one shall stand in one shall fall I don't remember exactly.
When it comes to traditional G1-style Megatrons, he has to be a gun. Other versions like the movies do work for me with their different alt-modes. Perhaps something that requires the use of other Decepticons but isn’t a gun could be used? Maybe a manned turret similar to Galvatron?
Firearm alt-mode was more unique. What I always liked about G1 was the variety of the alt-modes back in the day; variety you don’t see much of these days. I also tend to be bias to firearm alt-modes as Target Masters was easily my favorite of the Master gimmicks . Just don’t understand why the issue with realistic looking gun toys affected Shockwave and Sixshot’s alt-modes.
I remember back at the Combiner Wars Megatron not only transform into a tank but also a gun. And I'm not talking about your regular Earth pistol no. He actually transforms into a space rifle which Optimus used it to destroy Starscream. I thought it was a pretty cool idea though
I always loved the irony of Megatron's gun mode requiring him to place trust in one of his troops to use his greatest power - it's what prevented him from simply blasting any of his people who got out of line, because he had to retain enough of their trust for them not to blast him in his more vulnerable alt mode. But when the gun alt mode became problematic from a PR perspective, I always thought that an M1-A1 Abrams tank was the perfect alt mode for him. It's a huge, powerful Earth vehicle that's a direct match for Optimus Prime's semi truck, yet it's an instrument of war as much as Prime's truck was an instrument of peace. The real Abrams is also equipped with a gigantic main gun, which gives allows the concept of Megatron's fusion canon being most powerful in his alt mode to continue. Having an alt mode of a Cybertronian aircraft is not a bad option for Megatron, as it reinforces the notion that the Decepticons control the sky while the Autobots rule the ground, but none of the aerial versions of Megatron that I've seen have the oomph of the M1-A1 tank. Funny thing is, there was an opportunity to give Megatron the best of both worlds - if the Blitzwing triple changer had been used as a new version of Megatron, he'd have had both a powerful tank alt mode, and an aerial alt mode, and being a triple changer he'd have posed more of a danger to Optimus Prime in one-on-one battle since Optimus is not a triple changer. I'd especially have loved to see Megatron be a triple changer in the live-action film rather than just a jet. But Bay missed the mark on the Transformers in so many ways, I really lost interest after about the third film and couldn't care less about the character designs any more. The recent Bumblebee film, on the other hand, gave us robot modes that were way closer to the G1 animated versions and looked fantastic, while giving us realistic Earth vehicle alt modes, and I'd have loved to have seen a G1 accurate Megatron on Cybertron leading the attack on Iacon.
As someone who's loved the live-action Transformers films since I laid my eyes on them, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to disagree with you on that last part. On the topic of the _Bumblebee_ movie, where _was_ Megatron in it?
Plus, I HATE the concept of mass shifting for certain Transformers. I know it's just based on the original toys of the 80's, but in the cartoons, compressing a 15-meter giant robot into a pistol/casette player just doesn't make sense to me in the slightest. Well that, and having Optimus's trailer disappear and reappear whenever he transforms.
His original alt mode sure was great back in the day. But with psycho clowns going postal every month I'm good with him being a tank or whatever now. Siege and Combiner Wars leader Megatron prove that we get awesome toys from tanks. Also, it's true. Starscream couldn't lead androids to a picnic. Parting thought: maybe a discussion for another day should about why Shockwave just hangs out on Cybertron as a giant pistol.
tigerbread78 the past two tank Megatron pulled that off great! Check out the recent Siege Megatron toy, it’s one of the most cartoon accurate Megatron complete with arm cannon despite being a tank :)
Guns as in a single hand held pistol is iconic in human history. While rifles are the better more versatile weapon...they are like swords. While pistols are like knives. I think Megatron should definitely retain his original pistol form.
I’m ok with Megatron as a tank. It makes sense. He is still half gun and he can move on his own. If we can’t get the G1 gun mode I feel a tank is the next best option
He could even be a triple changer as well like he could be a tank,A giant mobile space turret , and a stealth bomber like in the IDW comics
Hes also been a tank for 20 plus years, he was a gun in G1 only, as far as I'm and many are concerned, megs is a tank
Yep the tank alt mode sort of works better cause Mega can fight without someone else and his cybetronian mode was a tank to begin with so it just fits. Unless he becomes a moble canon like Shockwave he should be a tank or heavy space cruiser like form.
@@TheOmegazerox the truck from DOTM is also not a bad choice
I'm a G1 fan, so gun mode is always gonna have a soft spot in my heart. But making him a tank is a good, sensible solution. It sort of preserves the idea that Megatron is essentially a self contained weapon of mass-autobot-destruction whose alt mode largely exists to boost his already extreme firepower, and also makes him more versatile and autonomous in combat.
I like the idea of both. The gun is also psychological to his troops. They follow Megatron because he lends them HIS power, but ultimately he commands. The tank is basically a mobile gun.
Exactly, I mean a tank is just a big mobile gun, so it’s perfect for him as he wouldn’t have to be held by his minions, because I feel like that would get weird after 30 years
@@RodimusPrimal How about the idea of him transforms into a jet?
A tank is the best alternative to the gun mode.
A tank or an artillery would be the the best.

The Bronze Age of DC Comics what grade
The image of megatron as a gun needing to be held, aimed and trigger pulled by someone taught me at a young age that a gun, though a deadly weapon, is just a tool, like a knife or axe. It all depends on who's holding the gun, and how they use it.
Really turned it into a how to use firearms lesson instead a video about a toys history
And the correct way to use it is for the decepticons cause
I think the Tank mode is perfect. It makes the size changing obsolete, and just makes more sense.

Yes on so many levels.
A gun shouldn’t have to be controversial
The people wielding them however, that’s a different story...
Cops shoot kids wielding nintendo controller, i don't think it's safe to give them realistical looking toy guns. Besides, toy guns can qnd have been used in robberies.
ARX 351
Still, the gun didn’t shoot the kids, the cop did.
@@nekokyun944 Well looking into ourselves, usually has people blaming gun violence on the media. Video games, t.v., movies....etc.

Violence will unfortunately forever be apart of our lives... it’s sad... but the only thing we can do is acknowledge the violence, then teach our children why it’s bad... teach them the values of human life.
Us... perhaps...
Aren't transformers normal really small tho? So that can never really happen?
Now that I think about it Megatron truning into a gun is really ironic. He wants power to dominate others but needs someone else to use his greatest power.
No Megatron doesn’t need his alt mode to survive, it’s meant to enhance whoever is holding him
People always ask why starscream didn't destroy megatron, Because not only would megatron just break free, but if starscream did he would most likely be killed for treason

I really liked Megatrons original alt mode but the tank has grown on me.
His Jet and Helicopter forms aren't too bad either

Yeah, it really fits his personality.

"Guns don't kill people; *_I_* DO!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!"
THAT is an interesting take on a way his gun mode could be used in the future. IDW tried something similar but different and it caused Jazz to end up killing a human.
I hope someone developing a movie or game, sees this suggestion!! This is genius! All hail megatron!!
Or also release a Megatron gun accessory with Soundwave. He triple changes from tank to gun and robot and back, but the toy only has a tank mode.

What more can I say? I wouldn't be here today if the old school didn't pave the way!
I prefer the tank mode, honestly. Or his jet mode. The gun mode just always struck me funny
That G1-style Movie concept art looks great! But I still like the monster-like design for Movie Megs.

@@unstoppableExodia 😆😆😆

It's like Bruce Banner's eyes turning green.

Mattering on the story he should still be a gun it would be fun to see it brought back but also have him be a tank or something as well
Could do a laser based or "blaster" like a few other companies have to avoid this issue
@NotSnarl Well, he is known as the Emperor of destruction!
Agreed and honestly I'm worried shockwave and Megatron may never be guns again but if they were to turn into let's say a blaster from starwars or any sci-fi gun we could be golden.
@@danitankmen8213 I agree. Or better yet, a laser cannon (nod to G-1) alt mode, or a triple changer.
Oof. Yeah making a REAL gun look like a child's toy is pretty damn stupid.
I think it kind of shows thg that there is something different about the 50-70s when compared to the 80s and now.
That's because less people were shooting at the cops in the 60s and 70s
Personally I love megatron in his tank form
Btw great video rodimus primal 👍🏾
@@Jazz-cd5mu yeah the logic was litteraly "guns are bad so the leader of the bad guys should be a gun". Yeah, that's sure "innovation" (sarcasm)
@@CayeDaws the funniest part is that the toy megs originally was, is probably the weakest of the gun formers from that line, both the .357 magnum and browning hi-power looked much better and menacing as robots imo
How about a Triple Changer for Megatron as gun and tank modes.
Transformers Combiner Wars did exactly that.
I remember when my dad bought me the original 80s Megatron...it didn't make me a serial killer. That gun was more badass than the tank.

I grew up in the 80s. Frank Welker , G1 Megatron is my Megatron.
Loved the original Megatron . Loved Galvatron. Loved his Megatrons tank mode
Both fit really. Force peace by crushing opposition under his treads, maintain order by keeping a gun at society's head.

Im just never never going to see Megatron nothing other than a gun. G1 was the beginning and thats just how it is. Hes a gun. The older 30s and especially guys like me in the 40s seem to be more accepting than the other younger generation. And I think I know where your heart stands Roddy! Great video sir!
the short answer is yes.
the long answer is yes, he should.
Yeah but how do you explain his lack of mobility and stealth?
@@ChangedMyNameFinally69 This is Megatron we're talking about. He's not exactly subtle to begin with. He doesn't sneak or hide; he dominates the battle.
Leave mobility to the Seekers and stealth to Soundwave- the actual Decepticon spy- and Soundwave's cassettes, namely Laserbeak and Ravage.
@@javierpatag3609 Why even transform at all then?
@@ChangedMyNameFinally69 In Megatron's case? More firepower.
@@ChangedMyNameFinally69 In a similar vein, all G1 Decepticons could fly. As such, what's the point of Seekers turning into Earth aircraft or cybertronian spacecraft? Because they'd fly better- faster, more efficient, etc.
I always thought in that comic I was shock when megatron lost his mind and his face scared the hell out of me
The only Villain with no weaknesses! Megatron! Gun mode for me always.
When you think about it a tank is actually a moving gun platform. So, in a way Megatron is still a gun just, not all him

I think a tank fits him better, makes him seem all around powerful and dosen't make him essentially useless in his alt-mode without the assistance of another bot or person.
I wanna get MP36 Megatron....complicated transformation but really worth it for the great G1 cartoon look in robot mode.
When he gets turned into Galvatron he becomes a cannon so the tank seems like the next logical step

Guns don't kill people, Megatron kills people! LMAO!
I prefer the gun mode for Megatron
Keep up the great work!
Awesome video. I still like the gun mode the best.
It happened in the last Combiner Wars episode.
Tank mode is definitely the way to go, I think it suits his personality really well and is also cool as hell
Nothing tops the G1 Megatron in no manner. The Ultimate villain.
Wait megatron took Abe Lincoln's chair again 😂
17:00 and people wonder why toysrus went bankrupt!🤷
Siege Megatron had a rotating turret and a great alt mode.
It was one of the better tanks I've seen them do. I still think an assault gun would be a great alt mode. It's a little closer to Galvatron's alt mode and I'd argue in spirit it is a little close to the classic Megatron alt mode. Basically a large tracked gun.
@@magnuslauglo5356 i think war for cybertron megatron (the game not the toyline) had an altmode pretty similar to what you're describing.
@@Awesomoso So did Combiner Wars Megatron if I remember correctly, although that one scales better with Masterpiece.

for $500 no one should be opening that box but myself. hell, should be a little cheaper if they gonna pull that crap on US Buyers.
It seems Prime Wars Megatron is a Triple Changer. Interestingly that's what Animated was going to do to him.
Perhaps to keep Megatron on the shelves in these series, he should constantly change alt-modes. That should give him a long shelf life.
Formidable "Instrument of Destruction". I see what you did there.😁👏👏👏
Megatron's gun mode is undeniably classic, but i think his alternate vehicle mode should be either a tank, jet, or asault helicopter.
Guns are his original signature form, but a tank is just a giant mobile gun so I guess it works,
I kinda want to see megatron turn into a sword since they keep giving him swords to run with the whole gladiator motif
HA HAAA!!!! I'm not the only one who calls it a batmobile
I would prefer it if he could. We didn’t have this problem in the 80s when we were living in the ‘dark ages’.

"For is neutral special, megatron transforms into a gun"
As much as I love the original G1 version, a tank makes more sense to me.
I understand the gun mode being iconic, but there's two advantages tanks have over guns. One is mobility and the other is more firepower.
It's not really the gun that I miss, it's the frickin' huge cannon strapped to his arm. Hard get to get something similar from a tank mode
tigerbread78 the past two tank Megatron pulled that off great! Check out the recent Siege Megatron toy, it’s one of the most cartoon accurate Megatron complete with arm cannon despite being a tank :)
In future making of Megatron I think that they should keep transformed in Gun mode
The clip of Megatron flicking Michael Bay never gets old
Guns as in a single hand held pistol is iconic in human history.
While rifles are the better more versatile weapon...they are like swords. While pistols are like knives.
I think Megatron should definitely retain his original pistol form.
true. you can't throw a sword as easily as you can a knife.
