  • There’s nothing like growing your own watermelons. This season I grew my own Sugar Baby watermelons and they’re amazing. They’re an icebox variety meaning they’re quite small but grow fast and taste delicious. Each one is about 6-8 pounds but that’s enough for 2-3 people in my household. Each plant produces around 4-5 watermelons, but be aware like all melons, they sprawl like crazy! If you have a small space, growing any melon may be challenging. But if you do, these are 3 helpful signs when they’re ready to pick! Do you have your own special thing you look for when choosing / harvesting your watermelons? Drop your tips in the comments below so others can learn!

Those are fine ways to tell, some varieties though that can be misleading. Many cucurbits will show that they are ready to harvest by how easy it is to pop the stem off, if it comes off by gently pressure on something like the delta variety I've found they are the most ripe, if I have to cut the stem they are always under ripe.
