    "Serbian Composers in the Diaspora" concert, organized by Laura Emmery (Emory University), Ivana Ilić (FMU), Ivana Miladinović Prica (FMU), and Ivana Medić (Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts), was supporting the publication of Contemporary Music Review issue on the theme of Serbian Musical Identity (eds. Laura Emmery and Ivana Medić).
    "Kolo" is a spirited and fast South Slavic communal dance performed at weddings and other festive occasions. The name probably derives from the Old Slavic word for “wheel” (Serbian and Croatian: kolo, Bulgrarian: horo, or “oro” in Macedonia and Montenegro). This round dance may be performed in a closed circle or in a single chain with great virtuosity due to the different ornamental elements that the dancers add.
    In my composition, the cheerful familiar melody from traditional Serbian Kolo has been “crossed” with Latino rhythms resulting in unusual dance. The “prologue” and “epilogue” if the piece represent the principle of serialism tone row of composer Bernard Rands’ name:
    B - E - Re - N - (F#G#) - A - Re - D;
    Re - A - N - (F#G#) - D - S (Es = E flat)
    (The work was commissioned by DePaul University to mark composer Bernard Rands’ 75th birthday and residency in Chicago).
    However the toccata between this “frame” eradicates any lingering traces of serial principles.
