Idk why yall put KD2 over KD1. KD1 is special. KD1 is what won Nas his first Grammy and is what put everything in motion. It was the only album in that series that fit the KD concept.
@mra.4466 "Car 85" imo is better than store run. But I will say you're probably right in thinking kd2 has the better standout standout songs (rare & nobody). But KD1 doesn't have no mediocre points like "Brunch on Sunday" or Epmd2 sounding out of place with Eminem rambling for a minute straight. Even when Nas experiences the newer sounds on KD1 with "27 summers" and "spicy", it sounds better than Yktv, 40 side and deathrow east that Coop and Mike go crazy over(I skip those). But it's all a matter of taste. KD2 is a good album, but to me, KD1 is boarderline classic material. Won't even argue with someone who says it is...

To clarify my super chat from the show. I went song 4 song with KD3 vs Blueprint & it was a coin toss. I scored it 7-7 with one tie going through the track list. Not sure if it was a typo or if Mike D read it wrong but it was KD3 not KD1.
Stillmatic is the album that should be against Blueprint and I’m a Nas fan but Blueprint is definitely the better album, Stillmatic starts strong but dips towards the end, Blueprint Starts strong, dips in the middle but those last joints like Renegade, Mama loves Me and Lyrical Exercise take it to another level.
@@jaymac8421 In 2001 the talk in Hip Hop was about BEATS because people felt like the soul was missing in the sound of the culture and Jay delivered the better body of work in the regard. Then it was talked about how Jay floated on those beats. Stillmatic was cool but almost immediately folks was like the bars is better then the beats.
The Classic album hot takes on this show is wild to me. The KD series and the Magic series are really dope albums and I love pretty much everything except KD1. There is a reason why when Nas came out to 50 Cent's show recently that he performed Hate Me Now and Made You Look and not Office Hours. As good as Office Hours is it's not a classic Nas song but it's 100% dope to me as a Nas fan. If it was classic like that than trust me Nas and 50 would of 100% did that song because the classic status of the song would of made that so. Made You Look has lines like 'Don't say the car's topless, say the titties is out' and the whole crowd will say 'Say the titties is out'. That is what makes something classic and that song has grown over time to become as big as it is. Which KD song is doing that? This is what we mean by classic. The KD series has been an amazing experience without a doubt but the classic status and instant classic is just nonsense and 10 years is very valid to see if it is because it will show if the album has legs or if it's just recency bias. I am literally listening to you compare this run to what Gangstarr did which is just bat shit crazy. Like literally comparing the albums to Hard To Earn. I love Nas and Hit-Boy but absolutely not! Let's just take DWYCK alone. Just that song and the way the actual song made you feel then and now. Alongwaytogo is super dope, Ton-O-Gunz, Code Of The Streets. Like you are seriously downplaying Code Of The Streets and just giving credit to Mass Appeal. That's just straight up bugging. Even Nas would friggin tell you 'Aight Chill'. Nas is my favourite emcee but I am not gonna be sitting here taking this run over what happened in the 90s and what Gangstarr did. There have been groups that have come out of what Gangstarr did regarding formulas of music and taken their formula. Like how many people wanted DJ Premier songs because of Gangstarr's Moment Of Truth formula? As great as Nas and Hit-Boy is there albums are quality projects that need time to sit. In 2027 and in 2030 when I am in my late 40s I wanna see if I still have the same feeling about the run. This instant classic nonsense I am not going for it even if it's Nas. When you hear DJ Premier say 'Big L Rest In Peace' what do you think is gonna happen in a club or at a show? Full Clip hits differently. You know what one of the greatest musicans of all time Prince said about Step In The Arena? Do your research. I love Black Magic, I love Bokeem Woodbine, I love Slow It Down, I love Count Me In, I love Speechless, I love Rare, I love Meet Joe Black, Michael and Quincy, and 30 and many others by Nas and Hit but not one of those songs have reached classic status yet and time does determine if those songs will have legs. To me I think KD2, KD3, Magic and Magic 2 are extremely dope. I love them but for real only I as a Nas fan loves them. I will play them and to me their dope but in 2035 I want to see if I am playing them the way NY State Of Mind which is 30 year battle tested and Nas and Hit need that time to see how those songs hold up. I understand the classic argument and I remember how quickly you used the word classic for KD2, Magic, and KD3. KD3 hasn't even been out a year yet and trust me I really like KD3 but I am not throwing that word out. I know better than to just throw this word out there. I think on the Nas and Hit-Boy run I absolutely love it and it inspired me but objectively speaking there hasn't been any song that has absolutely broken the internet. Being objective as a fan I think is important. There is a reason Nas compared him and Hit to Gangstarr but they would never put what they have done over Gangstarr. Nas wouldn't do it himself. I really don't agree with your Classic takes and actually agree with Mad Max. I think it's just a lot of bias view points. Nas and Hit-Boy have been amazing but they haven't made me feel the way Gangstarr made me feel as a hip hop fan. Saying all of that to say Nas and Hit-Boy have been on an incredible run and I have enjoyed it and will remember the vibes. Let's see how the music holds over time. Looking forward to Magic 3.
Another way that you can tell something is classic is that a DJ would take the song and do routines out of it. You know how many times people have done that with Guru's songs from Gangstarr? I remember hearing DJ Babu of Dilated Peoples cut up 'Mostly The Voice' by Gangstarr. Dilated Peoples literally done a song called 'DJ Babu in Deep Concentration' in homage to the original song 'DJ Premier in Deep Concentration'. The impact the duo of Gangstarr has can not be underestimated in the culture. DJ's are an important component to Hip-Hop. Cutting up the songs was a big part of what a hip hop song does to you outside. Just being objective here. Let me be clear. I love this run but definitely not gonna try to downplay the Gangstarr run and just give love to Moment Of Truth and pretend that KD2, Magic or KD3 did what Step In The Arena, Daily Operation, Hard To Earn and Moment Of Truth has done for Hip-Hop. We will see how it turns out but the KD and Magic series ain't classics at the moment.
It’s unfair to compare because of the era themselves. Nothing really compares to the 90s. It gives us a different feeling period. But is KD2, KD3, and Magic classics, absolutely! I don’t think my opinion will change years from now.
@@YagirlLia22 Lia you know how long it would take a single to build up impact in the 90s? Months. So even though the times have changed it also comes with some advantages cause what took months before for someone like Nas could pop in 24hrs online. A classic is questionable cause again I don't know what qualifies that today but just an monster song? That can be done.
@@YagirlLia22 These albums are cult classics for Nas stans. You really want to tell me KD2 can be compared to actual classic material? Where are the songs? The impact? The cultural influence? Stop it, yall bias is INSANE
@@YagirlLia22 Its a classic based on what though? What makes it a classic right now? Right now it's good music but what has the music actually done overall to warrant the title of classic? There is an argument that nobody has done a 6 album run in music history which is true I can't dispute that but if you do Verzuz with the albums it's important they go through the struggle and see how they hold up. Can't just be saying something is classic like that. That's a big statement when you say Classic and I think people just use the word classic like it's just a normal thing and it's not. Essentially Magic was trying to draw from the energy of what album exactly? What lyrics are we quoting from these Nas and Hit albums? What is it in the production that makes us go OH DAMN?! It might actually be there but these things were decided over time. People just like the sound of the word classic and just throwing it around to anything. Why can't something just be a good or a dope album which the albums definitely are. It's an absolutely dope body of work from Nas and Hit. I have loved this run. When you say that it's not fair to compare the eras why isn't it fair exactly? Coop basically is saying that the run that Nas and Hit are on is better than what Gangstarr did as a duo in the 90s so why wouldn't I compare when he is basically doing that on the show? I wouldn't make the comparison at all if he didn't come with these type of takes to justify his opinion on Nas and Hit being the best duo essentially of all time which they are not! I think Nas and Hit are great together without question but classic is supposed to mean stand the test of time. People have already made up their mind and the albums haven't been through no battles and it should the same way Nas's other albums have. If people want to say Life Is Good is classic they can because the album has been around for over 10 years and has held and he was doing different things with the album which is another thing. I really enjoy Black Magic. Probably my favourite Nas song on Magic 2 but I know that it's not classic. I like it because Nas is doing different things lyrically, cadence wise, and conceptually. However the song may resonate more in the years to come. I'm not throwing out the word classic even though I love Black Magic A LOT. There have been talk on Greatest Hits on this show and how 'Slow It Down' would make it on there. How? I think Slow It Down is dope but a hit? Like people have favorites like The Truth which lyrically Nas goes crazy on there but when you think of 'Greatest Hits' do you think 'The Truth'? And if you do what makes the song a hit? Like there seems to be one rule for Nas and another rule for everyone else when it comes to hits on this show. I say this respectfully but there is a lot of objectivity talk on here and I am not sure that I see the objectivity when it comes to talking about classics which is why what Mad Max was saying made sense. I am saying that you can like an album and even love an album but really none of the KDs or Magic series are certified classics. They are just personal classics to people who are fans of Nas and that's it. That's fine if you think it's a personal classic to you but it's not set in stone for everyone in the hip hop community and that's okay. People need to know that. Even their cult classic album argument was weak especially in mentioning Gangstarr. Groups were born out of what Gangstarr did for the culture. Nothing musically in terms of duos has been born out of what Nas and Hit have done yet. That's how you are able to tell the impact of something. How people in the culture respond to it and how it effects the music and the culture over time. I disagree respectfully with the classic talk. We are all entitled to our own opinions and I get that but I do think that how Classic is used on this show is just thrown out like nothing. I have literally heard the word classic thrown out for Magic within a month of its release. I can't rock with that. Cause to me it's also got to be people who aren't necessarily huge fans that can see what the music has done for the culture. 2026 is the test for me for Magic cause it's at least 5 years. 2027 for KD3 because it would of been 5 years. Illmatic has been around for 29 years, It Was Written 27 years, I AM 24 years. Stillmatic is over 20 years. They have earned those titles of classic. I wasn't calling Stillmatic a classic when it came out. I called it a return to form but the word classic never got mentioned until years later. It doesn't mean the Nas and Hit albums overtime can't turn into that but the definition of classic just gets overlooked on this show a lot. This instant classic talk is just not the wave for me. In saying that I have been enjoying Magic 2 quite a bit. I think the album is underappreciated and in time I think people will get it. I think Magic 2 is dope as well. I funnily enough like everything on Magic 2 except 'Pistols On Your Album Cover'. I don't hate Pistols but I don't love it either. I am still listening to the Nas and Hit albums regularly so don't get it twisted I am a fan of their music but I will be objective and Coops Gangstarr points just ain't it. To be fair I think Mike D isn't as bad about that but Coop is just throwing around the word classic like it's law when he says it's classic and it really isn't. There are really a lot of people who don't think this run is classic yet and it isn't unreasonable to think that.
TO OUT WORK YOUNG AND OLD ARTISTS IS CLASSIC, TO DROP CONSISTENT ALBUMS AT HIS AGE IS CLASSIC, BEING IN THE HISTORY BOOKS IS CLASSIC SOME OF YOU ARTISTS WONT BE REMEMBERED AT ALL YOUR MUSIC AND TALENT WILL NEVER BE APPRECIATED , THIS COMMENT IS TO ALL THE WEIRDOS WHO DONT UNDERSTAND WHAT CLASSIC IS
1:03:25 We see that happening with The Game now. His catalog and mic performance was always respected until about the last year or so. Now he's been so blacklisted by casual listeners that there's revisionist history going on where he's wack, he doesn't make good music etc.
😂😂😂 just because dudes sold more than jay in 98-03 jay was still that dude. And he was putting in more work than those who sold more. From freestyles to features. Y'all kind fudging the numbers.
Most people think Wayne, Eminem and Tupac are the real GoATS, but there is a narrative that Jay is, partially due to media, mags, lists etc….but I don’t think it is only because of the music, it is because of Billion, Beyonce, Kanye, Rihanna, J Cole, Roc Nation, Grammys, basically his entire career. Which is very interesting because most other people are rated based on their work ONLY, people don’t call Wayne the GOAT because of Drake, or Nicki, they do because of his mixtapes, lyrics, impact on style on all the young rappers and the Carter series, Jay is basically the King of HipHop, he has a queen, a kingdom and an annual brunch. Nas cannot compete with that with music only. Also, ouput has never truly mattered to people as Big, Pac, Rakim, Pun, live off of a small body of work, yes even Pac because people only care about 2, or 3 of his albums. Nas is my favorite, but people care about impact and numbers and most people don’t care about him dropping music if it makes no noise and yet some might say is it really that good if no one is really playing it, or listening to it. I don’t hear anyone rocking these Nas albums, and the numbers are going down with each release. What I am saying is Nas is not great enough outside of his music for people to care about his music. He doesn’t have hits off of these albums, nobody is quoting it, as of right now, Nas is dropping albums just like Snoop, Busta etc and basically most people don’t care. The music should speak for itself, but it’s whispering and not yelling. A lot of people think Nas doesn’t even rap anymore. I’m super happy he is putting out music! Legacies will be established when all is said and done.

Between 98 and 03 there is no radio station turning down Jays music because people are requesting it. There is no arena Jay can't sell out cause people are showing up. At this point Jays over all impact isn't quantifiable even though we can count albums because this is the start of the internet era but it's no telling how many downloads and burnt copies Jays music is creating. So when we compare the KD's to this it sounds good but I don't think that's what we're seeing but the same power Jay had in 98 Nas has now so there's nothing stopping him. As far as what qualifies a classic I don't know what metric people are looking at but I don't see it. Just saying you know what a classic is is cool but chances are very few people are gonna agree or even know what album your talking about in this era. Anyway dope show, looking forward to the Nas album, Common and even Puff dropping the Love album but the standard imo is KD3 not M2 or anything less.

You guys are starting to overrate hit boy just because of his work with nas. His production had been decent at best . In what planet is hit fucking with alchemist?
the thing about the game, even though they get their masters back it’s no profitable. The industry will block people & unless you got years of connections they won’t be able to go around them. Nas is a top tier artist & managed to have his songs placed in commercials & movies, 50 doesn’t own his music but i’m pretty sure he owns his shows & cam always ate but besides them most can’t thrive independently & they don’t want to put in the work to get their catalog out their some people are soldiers while others are generals Also I think most artists realize when they pass whoever they leave it to will probably sell it anyway so they figure they minus well live wealthy from it.

Nasir/Hitboy had a very good run. Overall Nas redefined the lane of grown man rap. It is time to lay it to rest though
Jayz commented on Nas IG post
To clarify my super chat from the show. I went song 4 song with KD3 vs Blueprint & it was a coin toss. I scored it 7-7 with one tie going through the track list. Not sure if it was a typo or if Mike D read it wrong but it was KD3 not KD1.
So an album Nas just made is a coin toss with an album Jay made 20 plus years ago and out performed on every conceivable metric smh
Y’all Niggas Crazyyyy 😂 Blueprint is a certified classic knock it off.. If Hov drop this year it will out shadow everything Nas just did💯
Y’all Niggas Crazyyyy 😂 Blueprint is a certified classic knock it off.. If Hov drop this year it will out shadow everything Nas just did💯
Stillmatic is the album that should be against Blueprint and I’m a Nas fan but Blueprint is definitely the better album, Stillmatic starts strong but dips towards the end, Blueprint Starts strong, dips in the middle but those last joints like Renegade, Mama loves Me and Lyrical Exercise take it to another level.

KD 4 or KD the beginning
