SEQUENCING BATCH REACTOR (SBR) FOR WASTEWATER TREATMENT || Wastewater treatment technology

IN SEQUENTIAL BATCH REACTOR, ALL TREATMENT STEPS ARE DONE IN SINGLE TANK. Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) technology is a time-dependent activated sludge process.
SBR works in the following 5 steps;
1. Fill,
2. Aeration,
3. Settle
4. Decant
5. Idle
Features of SBR:
1. Equalization, primary clarification, biological treatment, and secondary clarification can be achieved in a single reactor vessel, thus conserves space, economical.
2. Operating flexibility and control with low running costs.
3. Secures a stable supply of good-quality treated water with high nitrogen & phosphorus removal rate.
4. BOD removal efficiency is generally 85 to 90%.

The SBR should be optimized to remove N and P by having the first stage go anoxic/anaerobic (ORP sensing as needed) until the nitrates/nitrites are exhausted as shown by ORP increasing. Then the aerobic stage should be started and when the DO sensor indicates an increase in the DO slope which indicates end of nitrification and then a anoxic stage to denitrify until ORP rises, (if needed the aerobic cycling can be repeated to increase N removal), then a settling period, then the SBR can be decanted to another tank for sterilization by ozone or chlorine and pumped to dispersal whether by drip or spray.
