Saxophone Brass Equivalent
Soprano - Trumpet 🎺
Alto - French Horn 📯
Tenor - Trombone
Baritone - Tuba
Dual why?
I want to say that baritone would be closer to euphonium because an actual BRASS baritone is a smaller version of the euphonium. I don't know what a brass baritone sounds like compared to a euphonium, but I know that they are similar.
+Emilyhorselover64
Euphonium can go way lower (and higher) than baritone sax. Y'all are dumb.
I think Alto is more related to Clarinet they almost sound alike.
+christian henry
Clarinet isn't brass
i used to play alto sax, but then i tried the tenor, and i was met with a beautiful sound! and vibrato on it was soo much easier and sounded much better, even growling on the tenor is AMAZING!
Henry Swaggins how do you vibrato a sax. I vibrato my cello is it similar?
Thank you for the advice i currently play alto and im thinking of switching to tenor
Zee alto is the girly man sax.
As a baritone sax player I feel discriminated and I believe that my voice must be heard
+Kari Kan haha :)
LOL its all good brotha
don't worry, baritone sax will be heard!
They're always heard
Those things are loud
+Derpnz and big
As a main instrument, I play the Tenor. I have only played the alto like 3 times and I'd say that the only that was different, was that it was easier to growl on the alto. But that was just my experience
Both the Tenor and Alto Saxophones can hit high notes, and they can both reach somewhat deep notes, but the Tenor is deeper and thicker as you described, while the alto is higher and sharper. The Tenor's notes are more like those of a higher voiced male, while the Alto's notes are more like those of a female voice. I can understand why some people prefer the Tenor, I myself sometimes have trouble in asking myself why I generally prefer the Alto, but yeah I personally prefer the Alto, although I think I prefer the deeper notes of the Alto more than the higher notes which probably explains why I sometimes ask myself why I prefer the Alto.
Thank you for the discourse. Not only was the information itself informative to me--an older person who’s wanting to begin with saxophone and already thinking that tenor is what I want to sound like--but your presentation of your own personality was very pleasant to witness. I admire your ease and fluidity in speaking in front of a camera. You seem to be a good-natured person. Thanks.
Hello, aspiring saxophone player here. Spike Lee's Mo' Better Blues sparked my love of jazz.....I found my way here by a random Google search but I believe I may have found my foundation of my journey to finally go after my aspirations. I think I will be leaning toward the tenor sax. I was a tenor in the choir when I was a teenager. Thank you and looking forward to learning more! First, I have to acquire my tool....
I play the tenor saxophone and I started on the alto. I love my tenor!
Me too
Armando Pace
I started out using a Tenor Saxophone in the 7th grade. I recommend starting with alto saxophone. And I recommend Yamaha, they are the best
I started tenor in 4th grade now I'm in 8th and I wish I picked alto but I bought my saxophone so I could play 2 instruments
This was a great video. I play soprano, alto, tenor and baritone, and I love them all!
I started playing flute in sixth grade when I switched schools but at the end of seventh grade I decided I wanted to be in jazz band so I spent of summer learning alto. When I auditioned my teacher said I did great but there were a lot of altos already so I got moved to tenor. Now I play tenor in high school band, jazz, and pep band. I like the sound a lot better than the alto
Hi, lets try something… please mention your favorite Tenors, Altos and
baritone players (and sopranos if you wish) from the early days till
now. If you find they're good at more than just one type of sax, just
mention it. Thx.
John Hodges - alto (1907 - 1970)
Charlie Parker - alto - (1920 - 1955)
Paul Desmond - alto - (1924 - 1977)
Lee Konitz - alto - (born in 1927)
Cannonball - alto (1928 - 1975)
James Spaudling - alto, flute - (born 1930)
Coleman Hawkins - Tenor (1904 - 1969)

Gerry Mulligan - Baritone - (1927-1996)
Ronny Cuber - Baritone, Tenor, Clarinet, Flute (born in 1941)
Please, feel free to add your favorite reed players :)
On Alto Sax you cannot exclude David Sanborn, and You have forgotten Sonny Rollins on tenor. I also love Stanley Turrentine and Gato Barbieri on Tenor
Very nicely detailed comparison of alto vs tenor. Gave me the answers as to why I'm immediately attracted to the Tenor with "fly me to the moon" and alto sounded a bit different but couldn't describe. Thanks man. Take care!
omg thank you so much you are a lifesaver. I'm switching from clarinet to Alto Saxophone in 5th grade band and you helped me so much especially in the all fingerings video
Please, play tenor. It is 100x sexier and you get all the ladies (or gentlemen)
why
Ant1G3rm_ why I want to play alto
Ant1G3rm_ in my 6th grade we only have alto you get tenor in high school I think
+nicole candy mmkay but switch
Tenor is better in my opinion. It feels like a thicker sound and my ears are sensitive to the high notes on the alto
Thanks for making this vid bro. I'm looking to start on a Tenor
Thanks for the channel, you might become the reason why I begin learning sax. Seven blessings mate
I play Alto sax right now, but in Marching band i want to play Tenor. All in all in sixth grade when i got testing i wanted to play tenor. (LOL i literally cried when they said i got picked for alto) xP but i loooove tenor so much. So. I want it. :3
@HelloSaxophone"Equal Difficulty" is the English balance of the binary "Equally Hard/Easy."
Great video. I'm a composer and found this video while searching for the specific differences between saxophones. I think it would be a great help if you made another video about the differences between bari/bass and soprano sax, not only for people who want to play the instruments, but also for people like me who want to write for them. Woodwinds in general are seriously misunderstood by most composers!
I started with baritone when i was only 10 it worked well for me.
I totaly agree with everything you said. Thanks a lot for sharing.
no its better for representing for a girl screaming
Started on girlfriends alto ....... and now looking for tenor and baritone! Love the lower growl of the Bari (Motown influence)
Some good info. Thanks for posting.
Coming from clarinet, I found both in older Yamaha student versions. Good reed on either tips the balance, alto easier in the neck, but tenor with a great reed is pretty sublime.
Strasbourg St. Denis!! One of my favorite songs!!!
Thank u. That was very helpful. I play alto but my aunt accidentally got me a tenor according to my sister so i just wanted to know the differences.
well i started on a soprano then alto then tenor now a c-melody im learning on all of them now and i enjoy each one
Don't know about the Alto vs. Tenor debate, but Dat Ackschent is really something to listen to...
Today is the Saxophone day of the year :)
cheers for this it's really helpful as i'm currently deciding wether or not to start tenor sax
I play tenor. I'm a pretty good player, but I want more Jazz experience. I'm actually fortunate enough to have my own tenor and it's a nice horn, too.
YOu might like to try my Full song workshop program. that would give you a lot of insights into playing jazz :)
***** all instruments are horns.. even a flute is a horn
***** Technically even your voice is a horn if you count it as an instrument :)
Depends on context...Fusion bands like Spyro Gyra, David Sanborn and older Kenny Gorlick tend to play more alto. Blues and standard jazz are more appropriate on Tenor. I use alto for fusion and Tenor for everything else. Some key signitures are easier on Tenor. That being said I could not imagine David Sanborn without his alto or Coltrane or Wayne Shorter without their Tenors/Sopranos.
Personal experience play tenor early so you are the only one and get all the solos for it. Haha! However on a more serious note tenor has a more jazzier sound in my opinion I played alto for roughly 3 years than switched to tenor for 2 years now but yeah it's totally up to you
I'm being a little picky, but I think it would have been helpful to see not just the tenor sax, but the alto sax also. A side-by-side visual comparison would have been a nice addition to this video. Good video nonetheless. Thank you. : )
I'm a pretty small female, 5'3 and barely 125 lbs, with very small hands and I Never played alto. I went straight towards tenor and have noticed its rare to find girls my size, or girls at all, on tenor, but I'm happy to say I'm a permanent tenor saxophone!
+Note Lyric Thats great :) Maybe take a look at my Bad Boy bluerosesaxophones.com/the-bad-boy/ :)
Lol I am going into middle school playing tenor but I also play snare drums which is known for a guy to play ps I play the alto sax to and recorder
Im i have playing trombone for about 2 years, playing trumpet for a year now looking at a sax. Would have loved an alto, but since you mentioned tenor is bflat that sounds more in line with my other instruments. Hope i can afford it let me go see the price.
The question is not what instrument you like, but what sound you want to achieve. That should answer it. People often pick one over the other because of looks, style, what other people think about it, what other artists play, etc... when you should just answer the question what music you want to make. I love the sound of both. And both have their place. But I choose the alto (for now), because I wanted to play (mostly) the higher register kind of music. What doesn't mean you can't play low notes or subtones on an alto to change it up a little.
Don't worry too much, you'll buy both eventually anyway :D
As a 11 year old, in band currently playing clarinet, I honestly don't know what to choose. I like the sound of tenor more, but the size of the alto appeals me as I am 4"6". I Don't know what to choose!
It so nice you take time explain so thorough!
now people will think that alto is for females 2 play and tenor is for males 2 play :D
My sax teacher gave me the tenor over another boy
+Holly Silvester Yeah, through middle school and now in high school, I'm the only tenor saxophone
+Faith Crawford Yes - gender really should not be the criteria for which horn someone should play but how they sound on the respective horns and personal preference. I know a guy who just doesn't like his tone on tenor so stays with alto. I think what James was driving at in his video was how, in general, the tone sounds. Alto higher (like female), Tenor (lower like male). But that is much different than gendering the respective saxaphones (e.g Alto sax for women, Tenor for men). He was trying to give people a flavour for how the TONE differs not which sex should play which horn.
Funkmentality TRIGGERED
Haha
Great sax playing and informative talk. Thanks so much!
it definitely does help, thanks so much for posting this info
In the classical reportoire, the alto has way more pieces
I play cello and I absolutely love it. I've been playing for like 4 years. Should I play alto or tenor?
Very informative video hope to hear more tips from u
Btw every sax in my band is male and also in the 7th and 8th grade. However there is one girl who plays the baritone sax
Very helpful! Thanks!
great info i have an alto and i just got a tenor the alto i have i do not like its a piece of junk i brought at the time as a suggestion because i wanted to play the saxophone but i have always love the sound of the tenor i will buy a better alto saxophone to see if i like it but the one i have sits in the corner
My tenor is awesome... It plays soooo smooth. And no, I'm not that 12 yr old trying to show off. I'm 16
+Dominic Iorio omg "16", you are so old.. What a show off, lol 16 years old!! Jk mate, wish I had one like yours :)
lol I am 12 and I play one. I'm still learn, though
+Sonicboom125 AD *learning
Dominic Iorio I'm 14 gonna switch from alto to tenor
What 12 yr old are you're referencing here? Not Kirill, I hope. … btw, he's not 12 here but 10 and playing tenor like a pro. 1.2M views!
I have the Alto but I want the Tenor ...
Cash Young dito
Me too. But Alto is a good place to start though.
I start too with alto but now i would like to have tenor. What you think guys, should i train on alto and after some time a should buy a tenor, or i should take a break and start from basic in future with tenor so that my alto technique doesn't ruin tenor technique?
@Marttin life enjoyer Its up to you tbh. Techniques are transferrable between the Tenor and Alto. Tenor requires more air but the fingering is the same. Just on the Tenor there is more space between the notes.
same
I play regular alto sax for band, and tenor sax for jazz band!!! :)
I see now, forgetting which brand it is, that some companys are making a larger bell for the alto which gives it a less brighter or more darker tone.
I'm currently switching to Tenor after 5 years of Alto in my junior year of high school. Do you have some easy tips to make the transition quicker or how I should change my embrasure?
*embouchure
LOL! I like the way he tried to slide past the fact that he said that some females sound like men. Well played!
I like playing tenor I know how to play a lot but this is a great video
thank you this helped alot. I am in 6th grade and play the alto sax but i feel like i want to change to a tener sax when i get to 7th grade
Having just recently picked up the sax I don't know if I should be happy or sad that a Bb is a Bb to me, and not a C.
Tis might actually help you more then hinder you :)
You could try to find a C melody sax or a C soprano, but…
Great explanation. Thanks for that post.
Hi, i wanna ask a question.
I'm going to get my first saxophone.
I prefer the tenor to the alto, but I don't know if it is a good idea to begin from a tenor. I've been reading that it's recomended to begin with a alto. I want to get a tenor cause I'm in love with his tone, should I get first a alto or that's no matter if I get a tenor forstly?
*its tone*
I made a mistake
Armando Pace You can start on tenor if you want. Most people start on Alto, but there is no problem at all with starting on tenor if you are more inspired by that :) Good luck!
Ok, thanks a lot. Greetings from Naples :)
Ive been playing the Tenor for about 3 years starting with it, and I loved it, I regret if I started with alto. Its not too hard to play from my opinion.
It's a lot better to start on alto because it's smaller and in my opinion easier to play for beginners and then move to tenor if you want to (im not an expert sooo)
You play the didgeridoo as well?
Alto squad where you at?
thanks man, now I'm sure I'm gonna buy a tenor sax, I just like it the best :)... but I have a question, as the tenor sax is bigger than the alto sax, is it more expensive? does it require a better maintenance?
Tenors are slightly more expensive most of the time yes, maintenance is the same though.
Love the Baritone Saxophone more =D
+xkevxify the baritone isnt sexy like the alto
but tenor is saxier
xkevxify
Contrabass... Is THE BEST.
I think when I get good on alto I might switch to tenor, I got big hands myself and it's a little hard for me to push some of the keys since they are close together. Well then again once I get good, I only been playing for a few weeks.
+Joseph McGowen Is one of the reasons I also switched. Tenor gives me a lot more space to move and the sound is of-course also very nice.
+HelloSaxophone Well when I get good I will see about spending some Benjamins and get a good tenor. Maybe even a Cannonball, I heard those saxophones play like a dream although if I ever have a extra 9 grand sitting around. If I can make a 78 Buescher Aristocrat sound good I'd say I would be ready to step up to a tenor.
THE ALTOS HAVE BEEN TRIGGERED REEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Hans I was an alto but recently upgraded in my opinion alto is kinda bad:
I just got upgraded to a tenor but I still play alto don’t worry
i personaly favor the tenor sax over all of the sax's but I prefer to play the bari sax because, its... well... big...
when your in a band which sax is much more better?
i cant tell if mine is an alto or tenor i bought off somone and they said it was alto but it looks diffrent then my school bands altos so is there any diffrent on how they look other then size since it winter break i cant check the sizes
+WildTeamGaming There are also other types. It could be a C-melody fore example ( a sax is tuned to C piano key). If you send a foto of it to info@hellosaxophone.com I can take a look at it for you.
helped a lot, thanks!!
I was hoping to hear a sample of each played... do you have a video where you play both to show the difference in the sound?
Hi I'm a DJ and i'm planning on playing the sax at the same time. My question Is to you Is, What would you recommend to use over Modern day Dance/Electronic Music A Alto or a Tenor ?
+Chris Spiteri Better an Alto. The higher notes tend to cut through the loud sounds at parties better. Also use a metal mouthpiece for gigs like that (I do this sometimes myself) :)
You where correct I am trying to decide whether I want to play the alto sax tenor sax or the baritone sax sry if I got the baritone sax wrong I know it starts with beri
This is an excellent orientation video!
THANKYOU. :)
This video explained so much and clarified so much. haha. Cudos to you. (Y)
Id say tenor is a little harder
True, but it also depends on your playing style and preference
+Ethan Jordan yup. But your embouchure needs to be more precise and stuff
Everyone said my name was stupid so I changed it. Yes especially with the low notes
I find the tenor to be easier to blow and get a sound I’m a beginner and bought a tenor and alto. I think either is fine to start out with honestly but I do think the alto is a bit more finicky. I do have a background in music so I’m not a beginner to music.
I have both and actually find the alto more finicky.
Do tenor and alto have the same notes on fingering
yes
Shout out to all my tenor sax players!!!
I play tenor for jazz and alto for church, gospel and smooth jazz🎷🎷🎷
I am a girl and in 6th grade. My school had us start ok alto but now my teacher is choosing people to play tenor and Barry and I got chose to play tenor. I love tenor so much than the alto
i can play both but i choose the Alto but i still really like the Tenor
I love playing all the saxophone but my favorite is tenor sax
I play the alto sax and I want to know if it would be okay if someone who plays the tenor would be able to tutor me or if the instruments are too different.
Hello Saxophone! I play alto a couple of years, but i love the discography for the tenor ? When is the proper time to "experiment" a bit on the tenor.I don't want to damage my embouchure or my fingerings...thanks!
TheFunkyKingston fingerings are exactly the same as alto. think the embochure is slightly looser on the tenor
very helpful. Tx
So in comparison, would you have to have a more open throat when playing something like a low D on Tenor than Alto? Or does the note naturally have the same ombechure and just comes out in a different tone? Just wondering...
Can anyone answer that please :) ?
You actually have to blow deeper on a tenor than an alto sax, the same way that you have to tight softer the reed when playing the same notes on an alto (at least thats what i've experienced)
Thank you !!
I just started playing tenor today, transitioning from alto BTW, and you need to supply way more air to a tenor rather than the alto, or you won't get the sound you want. After further adjustments you make to how much air you supply and experimenting with different more comfortable ambertures (sorry for my spelling), you can practice with dynamics, piano, metso forte, forte, etc. I hope I helped in some way with this ❤
thanks :) !
I play both
Goede uitleg maat. Thnks (Y)
Yes.... The only diff. Is the scales, and the concert notes, notes on music are identical
Any female tenor sax players out there besides me?
Rose Cadenza YESSSSS
I wanna play the tenor but I can't decide between the alto- I played the flute before- what is easier tenor or alto
I love jazz
Tenor and Bari squad where you at?
If you've played alto and then move to tenor it's hard to go back cuz of the tight lipping you need for alto vs tenor.
I was wondering if you had any video's that labeled all the keys of the alto saxophone? I'm trying my best to learn them well. Thanks!
Yo. You can look up a fingering chart online. Tip: the keys are the same on both the tenor and alto, ie; a G is played/fingered the same on both (as are all notes) and that's also true for the flute, clarinet, and oboe. So once you learn how to finger the notes on one of them, you can play them all the same way the difference is the omnature (how you shape your mouth/lips on the mouthpiece. Hope this gave you some insight.
Thanks! That does help. I'm about to get a tenor. Mainly because I have huge hands that are cramped on my alto.
+William Bynum In mu guide I have a complete worked out chart with all the fingerings and a video showing in detail how to move your fingers from note to note :) good luck! :)
thanks!
@@sea619er technically not, the flute, oboe, clarinet all have different fingerings from saxophone, I've performed on them all. They do share similarities, but they're still different enough that a beginner can't just play every instrument with ease.
does tenor have the same keys to press as an alto
I would guess that if you are working with a female singer use the alto and if you are working with a male singer use a tenor...use the right tool for the job...
is the fingering chart on an alto sax the same on a tenor sax?
+Nicholas 19D Yes, its the same fingering for both instruments
Strasbourg St Denis... Roy Hargrove one of the best songs on the planet.
I really liked the outro music/performance. Where can I listen to more?
He's soloing over the changes to Strasbourg Saint-Denis by Roy Hargrove
why not both
