    Nice. I love my palm 3 if it was more power efficient and didnt lose its memory so easily when changing batteries, i would still be carrying it daily. The game "Space Trader" is worth picking up one of these by itself. Funny story, i was giving this girl a ride home after she got off work at Walmart a couple years ago and was using my palm 3e to mess with the volume on the store tvs. When she asked what i was doing i said "playing with your tvs" and she said they were all locked down and couldnt be messed with so i used my palm thats over 20 some years outdated to turn off the tv. That shocked her. Lol they still use the same ir codes.

      I know what you mean talk about range anxiety! And your right it is amazing to think how long IR has been a constant in tv tech. Thanks for watching.

      @@RetrogradeScene hey thanks for your reply. I found your video because I am looking into trying to incert some sort of charging circuit into one of these. I have several, some working, some not.

      Sounds great! I would love to do some more technical videos on palm and build things for it. Need to set aside some time which always seems the hard bit.

    The previous models could be upgraded with more memory, there was an official 1mb upgrade for those under 1mb of RRAM but there was also a 2mb (Palm III) upgrade card that gave the older units 2mb of memory, contained the new Palm OS 3 and gave the older models IrDA. It even came with a new RAM cover for the IrDA transceiver. Third parties also made use of the slot, there was a SmartMedia card slot on one, TRG made 8mb modules for those older models that also included more flash ROM onboard! These are insanely rare as you would imagine.
    I love the OG Palm III, it had the good backlight. My first one was actually the IIIe when I was a kid, maybe 2001~2002 I got it. It was great.

      I’ve been looking for some of these for a while. Definitely hard to track down especially for a good price. Thanks for adding the info and thanks for watching.

    Five months! Where's the warehouse? The moon? Wait. Is that what the NASA announcement is about?
    Interesting video! I enjoyed that trip back in time.

      Thanks! Yeah the delivery was a pain as it took a while to find ones the right dimensions, and then after I made the order they were just uncontactable. I think they were struggling due to COVID.

    I loved this. The Goku ref was awesome lol. That flux looked like mined garlic lol. 5 months for the parts to come in..man that is crazy. I miss electronics stores. The ones that we still have in my area are clueless. Had no clue what I mean by thermal paste or even cmos batteries. I say cmos batteries because an old system had a very unique one that I had to order.
    Anyway Loved the repair and great audio. :)

      Thanks! Yeah it’s very much old school flux! It’s what I’ve always used. I miss stores too especially when you just want one or two of something. I used to love going to the bit at the back of the store and getting them to get me one transistor from the draws!

    Thanks for this video! I recently picked up a non-working Palm III for a couple bucks recently. The PCB wasn't budging from around the battery compartment when I was trying to take it apart to clean it, just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. Looks like I just need to try a bit harder.

    • @RetrogradeScene

      Yeah it is tough to take out, it’s a tight fit and it’s clipped in, but it should just come off. Good luck getting it out and hope you get it working!

    Do you think you'd be able to fix a Handspring Visor? Among other PDAs of mine that need to be fixed, I haven't had much success trying to fix this one in particular. It looks like something fell off the main board.

    • @RetrogradeScene
      @RetrogradeScene  4 года назад

      I’ve been lucky with the Visor’s I’ve had so I’ve not needed to fix any yet. I’ll try and get some pictures of the main board’s in mine, might help workout what’s missing from yours.

    Will the memory module in this palm iii work in the palm iiix?

    • @RetrogradeScene
      @RetrogradeScene  3 года назад +1

      No I’m pretty sure it’s not compatible. I know they changed the DRAM controller with the IIIx and I’m sure I’ve read you can’t use the Palm III modules! If I get a IIIx I’ll test it!

      @@RetrogradeScene Thanks alot! I was gonna buy a iii to take out the memory module to put into my iiix, I guess it's a no go then.

      Retrograde Scene also can you share the details on the capacitor you replaced? I am trying to find it in AliExpress. Thanks

    • @RetrogradeScene
      @RetrogradeScene  3 года назад +2

      It was a 0.1F 5.5v type H capacitor. I found some on eBay which were the second lot I ordered and they arrived quicker from the time of ordering. I’d recommend looking on there.

    Hi, I have a pair of IIIxes, both have died during the last 20 years in the loft. So worth a punt to replace the caps. What is the rating of the capacitors? If you have a surplus I would be interested in buying a couple. I have another really rare Palm device, an Acer S30 which was a giveaway with a laptop I bought. Colour screen and MP3 player and expansion via a Sony Memory Stick. Sprang to life when I put it in the dock but rechargeable battery is shot. Fortunately available on Ebay.

    • @RetrogradeScene
      @RetrogradeScene  Год назад

      Yeah I’ve got a few that I need new batteries for. Never had an Acer Palm device. I keep meaning to look for more Palm licensed devices, there’s some really interesting ones out there! The capacitor is a 5.5v 0.1F super capacitor and Its a H type mounting. Good luck getting them working its helped me fix a few now.

      @@RetrogradeScene Thanks I'll see what I can find. I have a few contacts into electronics. I may look at getting one with the right rating but wrong shape (if cheap) so that I can establish if that is the problem with the case open

      50 pence is about 62 cents at the moment, and it’s referred to as 50p. Or are you surprised at the price?! Either way thanks for watching.
