Caught small mouth all day with the white python opening weekend of bass season last week. Morning, Noon and Night. All my limit was caught with except one with a rapala perch, was with the PopMax. I was impressed. I am a Hula Popper/Jitter Bug fan and last weekend the popmax outperformed both.
Enjoyed the video. Today I received my first Megabass' lures: Pop X and Dog X Jr. Coayu. The quality is great and, to be frank, unparalleled. Angler's eye candy.
I have caught a TON of bass on this lure. This lure is so effective that I have caught the same bass twice in the same spot within 15 minutes. BUT the ONLY flaw is that the hooks are weak... The front treble was straightened out by a fish which I would estimate at around 5 pounds (you'd imagine they would provide better hooks for a $20 popper...) I would definitely change out the hooks. The split rings are straight. I also use a red marker and color the inside of the gills just to make it that much more realistic. Keep them lines tight and good luck!

I was just checking out a video of yours from January of last year where you pointed out the similarities between a Lucky Craft square bill and a $5 lure from a company called FishKDS. I checked them out and they have another lure very similar to this they call “max popper”... for $4. Of course the brilliant finishes are missing, but if the internals are the same, it may be worth checking out.
Im glad you said in the video that all these ultra-realistic lures are designed to catch you at the store, not fish, because this is the real truth. I have to admit, though, it does work. I have bought many lures just because I think they look cool. I can't catch anymore fish with all these ultra real high dollar lures over the lures I inherited from my grandpa after he died (some lures that date back into the 1960's and still catch fish..just needed new hooks) $20 for a popper is ridiculous...but sure does look cool
Put it on for a couple of hours tonight and caught a 6 pounder within 10 casts and missed idk how many cause I'm terrible at hook sets lol. Well worth the twenty dollars I'd say!!
No doubt, you make a good case. I love the Yellow Magic poppers (also not cheap @ $17) for their ability to wear many hats--chug, pop, walk. But the rolling action and realism of that thing does seem advantageous. Nice review!
Nice video! I have a Pop Max too. Caught a nice striper bass on it. How would you rate bass vs pike pound by pound by fighting power? Let say each specie has equal weight of 4 pounds.

I'm going to buy one! By the way, in the fishing portion of the video, I noticed your reel makes a nasty sound when you cast and sounds like a coffee grinder when you fight a fish. Maybe you should have spent the PopMax money on getting your reel serviced! ;-) Thanks again for another great video.
The noise from the reel is due to ceramic spool bearings. When un-oiled they are quite loud casting and also audible on the retrieve. However, without lubrication is when they offer the least resistance and consequently the best casting performance. I service my reels at regular intervals.
KeepinItReelFishing I run Boca ceramics in one of my Lew's Tournament Pro reels. I don't think it sounds quite that noisy, but it could just be your vidcam accentuating the sound. I know this comment is 2 years old but fuck it. I live in South East Oklahoma I'm going to say that colors don't really matter on a top water just as long as it has an orange or white belly. And I actually think pumpkin seeds and bluegill are the same thing. It's on of those fish that where ever you go there's a different name for it
Poppers often utilize them....more so than other topwater lures. They certainly add more action and a bit of fluidity. Does that equate to more strikes?.....who knows.

If the one you saw doesn't have a feather on the rear hook, it is not the same bait (megabass pop max). And yes, the feather definitely makes a difference, or they wouldn't put them on certain baits that are presented dead stick (still and not moving) at times.
Depends on the forage in the particular waters you fish. If you're bass fishing, you can never go wrong with the GG bass color though. I suggest understanding and learning about the forage in your particular waters before buying any lures, since that will dictate all of the lures and colors you purchase. Good luck!
You should try a simple Google search...... And what are the chances a bass goes after a bass? Lol, you obviously aren't a bass fisherman, or an experienced angler in general if you have to ask that. Hey man. Great reviews, very detailed. Just curious before i get such an expensive lure: is the gill structure very durable? can it handle hitting something hard on a cast? looks really cool but a bit fragile. Keep up the great videos.
Thanks Bennett! Good question too. I have had the good fortune not to hit mine of any rocks so far. I have hit a good amount of logs and got it stuck in a few branches, but thats about it. Both the gills and the lure as a whole appear very durable, and I have never read of anyone breaking off the gills...although I'm sure its possible with the right cast on a rock.
I like the lure a lot but i dont think it should be called a popper. Its a lot more like a walker and yes there is a difference. I like the bubble walker from river 2 sea, and the shape is very close. The detail on the paint is not as detailed but it is also a great lure.
Agree, and I too like the bubble walker from R2S. It has a very similar action to the pop max in the water and even rolls similar to the way the pop max rolls, but the paint jobs on the pop max are far superior to the bubble walkers. That said, I have a tackle box full of both baits and they both catch me a lot of fish and are a staple in my top water arsenal.

Yeah, if you don't know how to cast well and can't keep lures from flying into trees, this lure is definitely not for you. BTW, top water lures shouldnt get stuck in rocks, since those are below the surface. If you're casting them into rocks above the surface, then goes back to this lure not being for you if you can't cast accurately enough to avoid them. For the cost of 1 popax, you can lose 3 pop Rs and still be fishing. To each their own....

What kind of reel are you using?
Hey rslim.....that was a Shimano Chronarch 201E7 with Boca Bearings ceramic spool bearings (hence the noise while casting).
Do you know if bass pro have these?
They do Eddy. They stock the GG Bass color, as well as 4 or 5 other colors. However, they don't stock the pumpkinseed color.
Here in California, I catch a bunch of bass on this. I even get stripers.
I live in the Tennessee, I really don't know what color to go with. I can't afford multiple colors. Can anyone help me out?

Great review, Megabass are works of art for sure. Jackall lures are just as good but are a good bit cheaper. Check em out.

It's a good bait but I've found it to have the most least durable paint job I've ever seen.
