This was an interesting comparison and illustrates the subjective hearing preferences of individual listeners. The reviewer was distinctly drawn (not biased) towards the Denon but once he had talked about the sound of cymbals it was patently clear to me that he preferred a bass-heavy, thick, treble recessed sound and not the finely etched, detailed sound of the Marantz. To those contributors who describe the Marantz as "boring" and "thin" you will therefore also prefer the Denon sound and I would not criticise your personal choice in this respect but having also evaluated both units amongst many others since the start of my Hi-Fi journey in the 60's, I will leave you with this; the Marantz is far from perfect (as are my higher-range choices these days) but if you want to hear those often elusive fine details which are not exclusively "cymbals" the Marantz lay these bare; the Denon masks them. Finally, many amps are "voiced" towards bass lift pre tone controls by "tweaked" internal circuits. Denon is one such example. The "thin" Marantz is neutral and that is how it should be before, (if you prefer) a modest 3.5 twist to the right of the bass control is applied. Everyone to his or her own but that Marantz is a lot better in outright clarity than it's Denon opponent in this test.

Excellent comparison, can you make a comparison between the Denon PMA-1700ne and the Marantz N40?

    Thanks for the video.
I think that 50Hz is too low as many cheaper speakers' frequency response starts at that value. So I prefer that 100Hz bass adjustment from Denon. (Yes, I have some of those cheaper speakers. 😅 )

I guess there’s less coloring with the marantz. Denons are categorized by having the smiley EQ sound which can be pleasing but you’re stuck with that sound whereas the marantz is capable of being boomy with tone adjustment. I really enjoy the look of the Denon. You might want to compare these two to the Yamaha a-s501, a-s701 or the a-s801. They give you more for the same price as the marantz current price. They do sound similar to the marantz but with way much more power. Great review. Thank you

Marantz matches well with fyne audio speakers. I had this denon amp for sometime , but it was very laid back and nowhere closer to the old denon amps such as pma 710 and had to return it back.

Compared both in audition, the Marantz was so much better, but I used jazz cd,as demo,in shop. The speakers might be a factor,as the JBL floorstanders really sang ,especially with a sub added.

I find it odd the 800 does not, if true.

Just bought some old B&W 601s. I'm I right in assuming the Denon would be more full, warm sounding?
I had a Marantz 55SE bitd and the sound was too hard to listen to.
Will be listening to TV, PC, Rock/Indie/Metal.
    Defo Denon???

I heard Μarantz PM6006 and it was bright sounding and ear fatigue! So i bought Yamaha A-S 701 which was neutral and much stronger.

My cheap $250 Yamaha amp R-S300 (50 wpc @ 8 ohms) with the FM tuner outperforms these two by a mile. Excellent base, mid-range & stereo separation (hooked up to a pair of JBL L-100 3 way floor speakers) I kid you not !

the marantz supposedly has the better dac but idk what real life difference that makes. I've got a 6006 but i'm torn between another 6006 or trying a 6007 for an extra bit of cash. the denon has a similar spec 24bit 192khz dac than the 6006. i have got amazon music etc so i will sometimes listen to ultra HD music to make use of the better dac but i could use extra bass and i know the dac in the 6006 sounds very good.

I have the Marantz and i love it but i do find the sound control button on the remote annoying because as you rightly point out it increases and decreases the sound control by almost a quarter of an inch with just a fast press. The volumn goes up and down way to much.

One has to have very bad speakers to: even think about turning your treble knob all the way to the right.
